NIOSH-NCOSH Collaboration To Develop National Institute Of Occupational Safety And Health In Saudi Arabia
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, through the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), will play a role in helping Saudi Arabia develop its newly established National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSHI). According to NIOSH, it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for strategic cooperation with Saudi Arabia's National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (NCOSH) during the 7th Global Occupational Safety and Health Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from May 4 to 6. It said the MoU is one of the main achievements of the congress, attended by a Malaysian delegation led by NIOSH executive director Datuk Ayop Salleh, representing the country's commitment to strengthening occupational safety and health (OSH) practices through international cooperation. 'The MoU opens up opportunities for strategic cooperation in institutional capacity building, expertise exchange, training development, consulting services and joint research initiatives," according to NIOSH in a statement. The conference, organised by NCOSH, brought together leaders, practitioners, and stakeholders in the field of OSH from around the world. According to NIOSH, Ayob's involvement as a guest panelist at two main sessions during the congress also reflects Malaysia's increasingly recognised role in the international OSH landscape, particularly in efforts to align OSH policies with industry needs, sustainable workforce development and global standards. 'NIOSH records the highest appreciation to NCOSH for the warm welcome and excellent organisation of the congress. "This experience has further strengthened bilateral relations and demonstrated a joint commitment towards creating a safer, healthier and more productive work environment," it said. NIOSH also expressed its commitment to supporting the establishment and development of NOSHI and hopes that cooperation with Saudi Arabia can continue meaningfully and with a high impact in the future.

Lorry Driver Involved In FRU Crash Has Criminal Records, Including Rape
Subscribe to our FREE On the morning of 13 May 2025, a stone-laden lorry collided into a vehicle carrying members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) and killed nine of them. The crash reportedly occurred due to a faulty steering wheel on the cargo truck. Amidst ongoing investigations, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay confirmed that the lorry driver involved in the crash has multiple criminal records related to drugs, theft, and rape, New Straits Times reported. 'All cases resulted in convictions. A urine test came back negative. Despite online claims that he had consumed ketum, no traces of ketum were found, and his urine tests were clean,' Ayob said during a press conference at the Hilir Perak police headquartes yesterday. The 45-year-old lorry driver is reported to be brought to court today (14 May) for a remand hearing. Therefore, we should not place the blame solely on the lorry driver, but also hold the owner of the lorry company accountable. 'In this situation, strict inspections must be carried out, as well as urine tests and checks for alcohol use,' he told reporters after chairing the Cabinet Committee meeting on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion. In 1969, the infamous May 13 incident forced the government to deploy members of the FRU, which is directly under control of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the Ministry of Home Affairs. The riots came in the aftermath of Malaysia's 1969 General Elections, where violent conflicts between the Malays, Chinese, and Indians occurred openly in the streets of Kuala Lumpur. The trouble began when opposition parties Democratic Action Party (DAP) and the Malaysian People's Movement Party (Gerakan) cut heavily into the Alliance Party's (the ruling coalition at the time) majority in parliamentary elections. The riots began at dusk, beginning with fistfights that escalated into armed conflicts. The 45-year-old lorry driver has a criminal record of six previous cases. PHOTO: THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK No drugs found in lorry involved in fatal crash causing 9 deaths, says Malaysian police PERAK - There were no drugs found in the lorry that crashed into the vehicle carrying Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) officers, said Perak deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay on May 13. 'There were rumours suggesting he (the driver) had ketum in the lorry but we found nothing. The urine test confirmed no drugs,' he said at a press conference at the Hilir Perak police headquarters in Teluk Intan, Perak. Ketum refers to a plant used in herbal medicine, and while it is used as a traditional medicine to treat certain illnesses, it can also be misused as it contains psychoactive substances, which can have stimulant, sedative and euphoria effects, leading to addiction. It is banned in Malaysia. Mr Ayob said the 45-year-old lorry driver has a criminal record of six previous cases - one for drugs, one for rape and four for theft. However, he said all these cases have already been tried in court and sentencing was passed down. He added that the suspect would be remanded on May 14. Asked about claims the driver tried to avoid another vehicle, Mr Ayob said they would investigate all aspects and could not confirm anything at this early stage of the investigation. Providing more details on the incident, he said the FRU's Unit 5 vehicle involved was heading back to Ipoh from Sungai Senam in a convoy when the head-on collision occurred at KM15 Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam at 8.30am on May 6. The convoy consisted of seven FRU vehicles – four lorries, one bus and two four-wheel-drive vehicles. One of the lorries carrying 18 personnel, crashed into the fifth vehicle in the convoy. Eight died on the spot and one subsequently died from injuries while receiving treatment at the Teluk Intan hospital around 10.50am. Mr Ayob said another nine people were injured – six in critical condition at the hospital's red zone and three in the yellow zone, which is for the less critical. He added one has been transferred to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for surgery. 'Out of the nine who died, seven were Malays, one was Indian and one was Orang Asli (indigenous person),' Mr Ayob said. He said that three post-mortem examinations have been completed so far. 'Once (all examinations have been) completed, the bodies will be bathed at the hospital, followed by funeral prayers at the police surau here. The bodies will then be taken to Sungai Senam for another round of prayers. 'After that, we will pay our respects before the bodies are transported to their respective burial locations. Eight are in various locations in Perak and one in Kulim, Kedah,' Mr Ayob said. Mr Ayob also said financial aid to families of the victims would be provided under the police welfare fund. 'Families may receive between RM58,000 (S$301) and RM299,000 each,' he said. THE STAR/ ASIA NEWS NETWORK Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
