NIOSH-NCOSH Collaboration To Develop National Institute Of Occupational Safety And Health In Saudi Arabia

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, through the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), will play a role in helping Saudi Arabia develop its newly established National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NOSHI).
According to NIOSH, it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for strategic cooperation with Saudi Arabia's National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (NCOSH) during the 7th Global Occupational Safety and Health Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from May 4 to 6.
It said the MoU is one of the main achievements of the congress, attended by a Malaysian delegation led by NIOSH executive director Datuk Ayop Salleh, representing the country's commitment to strengthening occupational safety and health (OSH) practices through international cooperation.
'The MoU opens up opportunities for strategic cooperation in institutional capacity building, expertise exchange, training development, consulting services and joint research initiatives," according to NIOSH in a statement.
The conference, organised by NCOSH, brought together leaders, practitioners, and stakeholders in the field of OSH from around the world.
According to NIOSH, Ayob's involvement as a guest panelist at two main sessions during the congress also reflects Malaysia's increasingly recognised role in the international OSH landscape, particularly in efforts to align OSH policies with industry needs, sustainable workforce development and global standards.
'NIOSH records the highest appreciation to NCOSH for the warm welcome and excellent organisation of the congress.
"This experience has further strengthened bilateral relations and demonstrated a joint commitment towards creating a safer, healthier and more productive work environment," it said.
NIOSH also expressed its commitment to supporting the establishment and development of NOSHI and hopes that cooperation with Saudi Arabia can continue meaningfully and with a high impact in the future.

Brunei Sultan returns from Malaysia

According to the local daily Borneo Bulletin on Tuesday, the Sultan returned to Brunei with his consort, Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, after meeting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. According to Brunei's Prime Minister's Office, during the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings in Malaysia last month, the Sultan had been feeling tired and was therefore advised by the host country's medical experts to rest at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for several days. Brunei is a Sultanate located in the northern part of Borneo Island, with 346,500 citizens in 2024. The country is a major oil and gas producer in Southeast Asia.

Anwar shares royal compliment on Malaysia's medical expertise
PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this during the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." "His Majesty told me that, as someone with exposure to and experience with some of the world's best medical centres, he was very satisfied with the quality of service, excellence, and expertise of our doctors at IJN," he said. Anwar added that while the government welcomes criticism, Malaysians should also recognise national achievements, especially in healthcare. "So while we allow criticism, which is not a problem, we must also recognise the strengths we have, and there must be the drive to push ourselves to do better," he said. The Sultan of Brunei was in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th Asean Summit with other regional leaders. On May 27, he was reportedly feeling fatigued and was advised by health experts to rest at IJN. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.
