Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday laid the foundation stone for the grand redevelopment of Janki Mandir at Punauradham in Bihar's Sitamarhi — believed to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita. The ceremony, worth over ₹882.87 crore, was attended by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, Union ministers, and other Shah performed the bhoomi pujan and unveiled the new design for the temple, which will be developed on the lines of Ayodhya's Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir. The project will be executed by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) under a nine-member trust led by the Chief redeveloped Janki Mandir campus will spread over 67 acres — 17 acres of existing land and 50 acres to be newly acquired at a cost of ₹165.57 crore. The Bihar government has sanctioned ₹882.87 crore for the integrated temple complex:The complex will feature a circumambulation path (parikrama marg), Yagya pavilion, museum, auditorium, cafeteria and children's play area, Dharamshala for pilgrims, Sita Vatika and Luv-Kush Vatika, parking zones and other bhoomi pujan was marked with holy contributions — soil from 21 pilgrimage sites, water from 31 rivers, a silver urn from Jaipur, silver prayer utensils from Delhi, and laddus from Tirupati Balaji. Punaura Dham will be linked to Ayodhya — Lord Ram's birthplace — via road and rail. During the ceremony, Amit Shah also flagged off the Sitamarhi–New Delhi Amrit Bharat Express through video conferencing. Bihar Tourism Minister Raju Kumar Singh hailed the day as a historic moment for the people of Mithilanchal, marking a new chapter in the region's cultural and spiritual heritage.
