CAF Denounces Security Breaches During Kenya-Morocco CHAN 2024 Match

Marrakech – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed serious concerns about security failures at Kasarani Stadium during Kenya's matches in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), particularly following incidents that occurred during the Kenya-Morocco fixture on Sunday. In an official letter addressed to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Kenya, CAF condemned the persistent security breaches observed during matches involving the Kenyan national team. The continental governing body specifically referenced serious incidents that took place during the Kenya-Morocco match played on Sunday. Morocco began their quest for a third CHAN title with a solid 2-0 victory over Angola in the Group A opener at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on August 3. However, their momentum was halted by the defeat to Kenya a week later. Among the reported incidents were a broken access door, spectators entering without tickets, attendance exceeding the stadium's regulatory capacity of 48,000, and unauthorized entry into areas reserved for media. CAF has referred these security failures to the appropriate authorities for investigation and appropriate measures. The organization has also initiated discussions with the LOC and the Kenyan government to ensure strict compliance with CAF regulations, particularly those related to security protocols. The match, which Kenya won 1-0, took place in a tense atmosphere, raising questions about security management throughout the competition. Kasarani Stadium, where these events occurred, is scheduled to host the tournament final on August 30 in a competition co-organized by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. On the sporting front, Morocco suffered its first defeat in the tournament against host nation Kenya. The Atlas Lions now find themselves obligated to win their next two matches to qualify for the second round, starting with their upcoming fixture against Zambia on Thursday. Despite entering the tournament as favorites, coach Tarik Sektioui's team struggled to convert their technical superiority into goals. After a promising start in the first fifteen minutes, Morocco's momentum was disrupted when striker Ayoub Mouloua sustained an injury that forced his substitution. Kenya's Rayan Ogam capitalized on a defensive lapse to score with a powerful, well-placed shot in the 42nd minute, giving the home side the advantage. Kenya played most of the second half with ten men following Christine Erambo's logical expulsion for a bad foul just before halftime. Despite the numerical advantage and substitutions that reinvigorated their attack, Morocco failed to equalize. Saber Bougrine and Youssef Mehri provided fresh energy, but the Atlas Lions lacked precision in the final third. The Moroccan team will need to quickly regroup to avoid an early exit from the competition. Morocco falls 1–0 to Kenya in CHAN 2024 Group A match

The Atlas Lions suffered a 1–0 defeat to Kenya in the third round of Group A at the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), held on Sunday at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. Eager to secure all three points, the Moroccan side sought to take control from the outset, stringing together short passes to move closer to the Kenyan penalty area while maintaining strong ball possession. Their early efforts led to a free kick just outside the Kenyan box, resulting in a clear chance to break the deadlock in the 10th minute. National coach Tarik Sektioui was forced into an early substitution when Ayoub Mouloua left the pitch injured and was replaced by Youness El Kaabi in the 23rd minute. The Kenyan players responded with a few attempts that posed little threat to goalkeeper El Mehdi Al Harrar. Meanwhile, the Moroccans kept up the pressure, notably through Anas El Mahraoui in the 37th minute. Against the run of play, Kenya opened the scoring in the 42nd minute through Ryan Ogam, who capitalized on a scramble in front of Al Harrar's goal to slot a loose ball into the left side of the net. The Kenyan side was reduced to ten men after a foul on El Mahraoui prompted referee Vincent Kabore to show Chrispine Erambo a straight red card in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time (45+4'). After the break, Morocco pushed forward in search of an equalizer, with Youssef Mehri coming close in the 46th and 48th minutes. The Kenyans, however, became increasingly dangerous on the counter, threatening to double their lead. Seeking to turn the game around, Sektioui brought on Salaheddine Errahouli for Anas Bach and Oussama Lamlioui for Bouchaib Arrassi in the 61st minute. The changes injected more dynamism into the attack, with Sabir Bougrine (65') and Mohamed Moufid (66') both creating promising opportunities. Despite maintaining constant pressure on Kenya's defense and making repeated incursions into the penalty area, the Atlas Lions were unable to alter the scoreline. With one win from their two games, having sat out the second round, Morocco remains on three points and will face Zambia on Thursday at the same venue.

CHAN 2024: Morocco Stumble as Kenya Take Group A Lead

Morocco's local team lost 1-0 to Kenya in their Group A match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Nairobi. Morocco started strongly, pressing Kenya's defence, but failed to convert their chances. Ayoub Mouloua left the field injured in the 21st minute and was replaced by Younes Kaabi. Kenya scored the only goal shortly before half-time, with Ryan Ogam finding the net in the 42nd minute with a low shot to the bottom right-hand corner of Al Harrar. Kenya's Chris Erambo was then sent off in stoppage time for a dangerous tackle on Anas Mahraoui. In the second half, Morocco pushed for an equaliser. Sabir Bougrine's effort in the 65th minute went over the bar, their best chance of the game. Kenya now lead Group A with seven points from three matches. The Democratic Republic of Congo are second with three points from two games, Morocco third with three points from two matches, Angola fourth with one point from two matches, and Zambia last without points from one game. Morocco will face Zambia next Thursday at 3:00 PM (GMT+1) for their final group stage game.
