Two arrested for bid to assault ex-min Swami Prasad Maurya
Lucknow: Rae Bareli police on Wednesday arrested two youths for attempting to assault former Uttar Pradesh minister Swami Prasad Maurya during his visit to the city. The incident occurred around 11:30 am when Maurya, en route to Fatehpur from Lucknow, halted at Gol Chauraha to meet his supporters. As he stepped out of his vehicle, two men, identified as Rohit Dwivedi, son of Amresh Kumar, a resident of Kaurapur Gaura under Ramganj police station limits, and Shivam Yadav, son of Krishan Kumar of Aati village under Deeh police station, allegedly tried to confront him. According to a written complaint filed by supporter Dilip Kumar Maurya, the accused created a ruckus and misbehaved with Swami Prasad Maurya. When other workers intervened, the accused allegedly threatened to kill the former minister. Both men attempted to flee but were promptly taken into custody by the police. A video of the incident later went viral on social media. During preliminary interrogation, Rohit Dwivedi confessed that he attacked Maurya because the leader had "abused the Brahmin community and made derogatory remarks against Sanatan Dharma and Lord Ram." Additional SP, Rae Bareli, Sanjeev Sinha said an FIR was registered under BNS sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) against the two arrested accused. Meanwhile, Azad Samaj Party chief and MP Chandrashekhar Azad strongly condemned the attempted assault on Swami Prasad Maurya, calling the incident shameful and condemnable.

Azad is aligned with INDIA bloc, says SP member
Lucknow: While Azad Samaj Party chief and Nagina MP Chandra Shekhar Azad may be ideologically aligned with the opposition, his recent political conduct suggests otherwise, said spokesperson Udaiveer Singh on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "He is a young leader from the exploited, oppressed, and deprived sections of society. He has worked hard and struggled even harder to reach his current political stature. The decline of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the state also came as a blessing in disguise for him," said Singh, a former SP MLC. He stressed the need for political clarity, especially in the current scenario. "I don't see him taking a well-defined and categorical political line," Singh said, adding, "The issue is, when any leader gets close to the , the party exploits their political utility in such a way that it eventually becomes a problem for that leader." "Ideologically, Azad is close to us because he represents the section of the population the Samajwadi Party identifies with. But for all practical purposes, he doesn't seem to be standing with the opposition," Singh told TOI. He also pointed to BJP's political approach, raising questions over why no action has been taken against Azad by the BJP-led govt despite his visits to areas typically restricted for other political leaders. "This leaves some questions unanswered," he said. However, Singh was quick to clarify that his remarks were his personal opinion and "should not be seen as the party's official line." Udaiveer, one of SP's most senior spokespersons, said it would be premature to draw definitive conclusions about Azad's alleged proximity to the BJP. "Let's wait and see how things unfold in the coming days," he said. His remarks come at a time when political parties in UP are beginning to prepare for the 2027 assembly polls, marking the beginning of early positioning and strategic alignments.

"Atmosphere Of Fear": Chandra Shekhar Aazad To NDTV On Kanwar Yatra "Violence"
New Delhi: Azad Samaj Party (Kanshiram) president Chandra Shekhar Aazad has defended the schoolteacher in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly who is facing a police case for a song that purportedly referred to the Kanwar Yatra, an annual procession undertaken by devotees of Lord Shiva. Rajneesh Gangwar, a teacher at MGM Inter College, was seen in the viral video singing the song to students who had gathered in the school premises. "Kanwar leke mat jana, tum gyan ka deep jalana, manavta ke seva karke tum sachche manav ban jaana," he said in Hindi, which roughly translates to: "Don't bring Kanwars, go light the lamp of knowledge. Become a true human by serving humanity." A case was filed against him on Monday after a local corporator and some BJP leaders approached the police and demanded action. Speaking to NDTV, Mr Aazad, a member of the Lok Sabha from Uttar Pradesh's Nagina, said the teacher just talked about "serving humanity". "We believe in the Constitution of India. In Article 51A, which is a fundamental duty, it is stated that every citizen must develop scientific thinking and get rid of superstition and hypocrisy. I heard the teacher. He had appealed to children to become humanists. But the government has filed a case against him for talking about humanity," Mr Aazad, who is also a lawyer, said. He said the teacher had said that you can't become a doctor, engineer or lawyer by participating in the Kanwar Yatra. "What did he say wrong?" Mr Aazad said. Mr Gangwar expressed regret if his words inadvertently hurt anyone's sentiments. In a clarification video and a letter sent to the school principal, he said that he "noticed a continuous decline in student attendance at MGM Inter College." "Upon questioning, he learned that many young students were absent due to their participation in the Kanwar Yatra," he wrote. He said it was in this context that he recited the poem to students during the morning assembly on July 12. His primary objective, he clarified, was "to make young students aware of the dangers of going into crowded areas on roads, staying away from intoxication, and maintaining regular attendance in class." Chandra Shekhar Aazad On Kanwar Yatra "Violence" Chandra Shekhar Aazad also questioned why there was no action against some people who were resorting to "violence" during the Kanwar Yatra, referring to recent incidents of Kanwariyas allegedly damaging cars after they brushed past them. Some of them have "created an atmosphere of terror" among women and children, he said. "People's businesses have been ruined. Their shops have been shut down. One religion in particular is also being targeted," he said, and asked if this is a "secular nation". "They have sticks in their hands and are breaking people's glasses and bones. There is an atmosphere of fear in families. I have talked to many people who are not ready to go from one district to another because they feel that if by mistake something happens, then they will be treated like animals or can be lynched," Mr Aazad said.

ASP chief Azad seeks Muslims' support for 2027 assembly polls
Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief Chandrashekhar Azad on Saturday called upon the Muslim community to support his party in the 2027 UP assembly polls. 'Other opposition parties are playing with the sentiments of Muslims and have cheated them whereas the ASP is fighting for their rights,' he claimed. Chandrashekhar Azad said his Azad Samaj Party was fighting for Muslims' rights. (HT file) Speaking at a Muslim dialogue conference organised at the KGMU convention centre here, Azad said, 'The state government has a problem with Muslims and not with the trouble faced by the common people during the Kanwar Yatra.' 'The devotees move on roads across the state during the month-long Kanwar Yatra. For the administration, it is no problem but when Muslims move on the road to offer namaz during Eid, a police force is deployed to stop them. The BJP government has adopted discriminatory policy toward the Muslims,' Azad alleged. 'The shops belonging to Muslim community are being closed on the Kanwar Yatra route. Muslims are not selling non-vegetarian food, yet they are forced to close their establishments. Even the barber and tea shops belonging to Muslims have been closed. It's against the Constitution,' he further alleged. 'The Muslims are being deprived of their education rights. Their institutions are being demolished and government schools are being merged. The other opposition parties are mere spectators to the atrocities on the Muslims whereas the ASP cadre has hit the streets to fight for their rights,' the Nagina MP claimed. 'The BJP-led NDA government has brought the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 to harass Muslims. Religious freedom is being denied to the Muslim community. The ASP will fight for their rights. The issues of Muslim empowerment and rights will be in the ASP's poll manifesto,' he claimed. 'The Muslim dialogue conference has been started by the ASP across the state to launch the fight for their rights. In the 2027 assembly election, the ASP will distribute tickets on the population formula- 'jiski jitni sankhya bhari uski utni hissedari'. In the upcoming panchayat election, the ASP will distribute tickets on the same formula,' Azad said. 'The ASP will organise Dalit and OBC dialogue conferences in various districts to mobilise their support for the 2027 assembly election. The party has decided to go solo in the assembly election and work on the Dlait-OBC-Muslim formula to unseat the BJP,' he said. 'The BJP is promoting negative politics in Uttar Pradesh as well as in the country. The Muslim community should mobilise its resources to ensure the victory of ASP in the assembly election. The Etawah incident clearly shows that OBCs are being suppressed in the state. Along with Yadav, atrocities are being committed against Lodhi, Kurmi and Sahu communities,' he alleged.
