Cops nab suspected robber of female food deliverers

JERTIH: Police have successfully solved three robbery cases that occurred in several villages in the Besut district after arresting a man in a raid in Kampung Gong Medang here on Monday (July 21). Besut district police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the 32-year-old suspect, who was suspected of being involved in knife-wielding robberies since last month, was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Besut police headquarters. "The suspect was arrested following three robberies involving three female victims, all of whom were food deliverers between June 24 and July 20. "The suspect's modus operandi was to identify female vendors who provided delivery service and would give addresses at unoccupied houses in remote areas in Kampung Gong Medang and Kampung Tembila," he told a press conference here on Sunday. Azamuddin said when the victim arrived at the given location, the suspect would approach the victim's car and brandish a knife before robbing the victim's jewellery. He added, the suspect managed to rob the jewellery belonging to the first and second victims, involving an estimated loss of RM30,000 and RM200 in cash. "However, the suspect failed to rob the third victim because the victim resisted, causing the victim to suffer injuries to both hands," he said. Azamuddin said following the arrest, the police also managed to seize two melted gold bars weighing 82.26gm believed to belong to two victims, a Honda City and two mobile phones belonging to the suspect. He added that checks found that the suspect had a criminal record related to robbery and tested negative for drugs. He said the suspect, who is married, was remanded to assist in the investigation under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code and Section 394 of the same act. - Bernama

JERTIH: Two children were among three killed after a boat capsized off Pulau Perhentian. Besut OCPD Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the deceased were identified as S. He said investigation showed that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets. The boat skipper, a local man in his 20s, has been detained to assist in the investigation. Supt Azamuddin said the man tested positive for drugs and has a record for drug-related offences. State Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime) director Maritime Captain Hamiludin Che Awang said his team mounted a search and rescue operation after being alerted about the incident at 10.55pm. 'We call on all boat operators to comply with safety instructions and check the weather forecast before embarking on a journey,' he added. Meanwhile, the Terengganu Mentri Besar's special officer (non-Islamic affairs) Dr K. Balachandran said the remains of the deceased will be taken to Butterworth, Penang and Sungai Petani, Kedah, for their final rites. 'A family member informed us that the 15 passengers, from four related families, had arrived for a holiday on Friday and were due to travel back to Sungai Petani and Butterworth yesterday,' he said. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, meanwhile, disclosed that the licence of the boat operator had expired. He said that according to preliminary findings, both the travel agency and boat operator had violated several laws and regulations. 'These include operating with an expired licence since April and failing to ensure that passengers wore life jackets,' he said in a statement. Tiong described the incident as gross negligence of safety since the travel agency had hired a boatman with a drug and criminal record. He issued a stern warning to all tour operators against compromising on the safety of tourists while trying to make a profit.
