Azeem finishes fourth in men's 100m at Universiade
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's fastest man, Azeem Fahmi, came close to the podium at the World University Games in Bochum, Germany yesterday. The Perakian, who holds the national record of 10.09 seconds, finished fourth in the men's 100m final after clocking 10.35. South African Joy Walaza Bayanda won the gold (10.16), Thailand's Puripol Boonson (10.22) bagged the silver and Japan's Hiroki Yanagita (10.23) took the bronze. Azeem, who is studying at Auburn University, United States, has a season best of 10.20, Sea Games champion Umar Osman clocked 47.10 to finish seventh in the men's 400m semi-finals and failed to qualify for the final. Sea Games bronze medallist Farrell Glenn Felix Jurus of University of Malaysia Sabah, recorded 2.08m to finish sixth in the men's high jump qualifying rounds. He finished overall 14th out of 23 participants.

Azeem charges into World University Games semis
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's fastest man, Azeem Fahmi, won his heat to qualify for the 100m semi-finals in the World University Games at Bochum, Germany yesterday. The 21-year-old Auburn University student in Alabama, United States, clocked 10.57. He registered the 13th fastest time among 54 sprinters. Another Malaysian, Aliff Iman Fahmi clocked 11.09 to finish fifth in heat five. Thailand's Puripol Boonson achieved the fastest heat time of 10.23. Sea Games gold medallist Umar Osman qualified for the men's 400m semi-finals after posting 46.97 to finish fourth in heat four. In the men's 400m hurdles, Fakhrul Afizul Nasir timed 1:11.87 to finish eighth and last in heat two. Meanwhile, Olympian Azreen Nabila Alias of University Putra Malaysia registered 12.04 to finish seventh in the women's 100m heat four. Nur Afrina Batrisyia from UPM did not qualify for the women's 100m semi-finals after clocking 12.32 to finish fifth in heat three.

Sprinter Azeem does just enough to reach Universiade semis
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's sprint ace Azeem Fahmi may not have been at his fastest, but he still did enough to win his heat and qualify for the 100m semi-finals at the World University Games (WUG) in Bochum, Germany, on Monday. The 21-year-old Auburn University student clocked 10.57s to take heat seven - well off his national record of 10.09 set at the 2022 World Junior Championships in Colombia - but ranked 13th overall among 54 competitors. Compatriot Aliff Iman Fahmi bowed out after finishing fifth in heat five with 11.09. Thailand's Puripol Boonson led the field with the fastest time of 10.23 ahead of the semi-finals, scheduled for later today. In the men's 400m, SEA Games gold medallist Umar Osman booked a semi-final spot after clocking 46.97 to finish fourth in heat four. His semi-final will also be held later today. There was disappointment in the 400m hurdles, with Fakhrul Afizul Nasir placing last in heat two with a time of 1:11.87. In the women's 100m, Olympian Azreen Nabila Alias could only manage 12.04s, placing seventh in heat four - outside her personal best of 11.77s - and failed to progress. Nur Afrina Batrisyia also missed out on the semi-finals, clocking 12.32 for fifth in heat three.

Azeem powers Auburn to NCAA 4x100m gold again
KUALA LUMPUR: Azeem Fahmi has made history by becoming the first Malaysian to win back-to-back gold medals at the NCAA Track & Field Championships in the United States. The 21-year-old sprinted to glory in the men's 4x100m relay alongside teammates Kanyinsola Ajayi, Dario Matau and Makanakaishe Charamba, helping Auburn University retain their title with a time of 38.33s in Eugene on Friday. The University of Southern California took silver in 38.46, while Arkansas University settled for bronze in 38.72. The Auburn quartet had earlier equalled the meet record of 37.97s in the semi-finals on Wednesday. Azeem, who ran the first leg of the race, summed it up on X (formerly Twitter) with a post: "We did it again, no big deal."

Azeem and Co charge into final in Eugene
KUALA LUMPUR: Azeem Fahmi and Co clocked a blistering time of 37.97 seconds to qualify for the men's 4x100m relay final at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, United States yesterday. In the semi-finals, the Auburn University quartet of Azeem, Kayinsola Ajani, Dario Matau and Makanakaishe Charamba equalled the meet record of 37.97 set by the Florida quartet in 2019. South Florida clocked the second fastest time of 38.12 and Louisiana State University were third with 38.14. Azeem's team will start as favourites in the nine-team relay final tomorrow.
