Where Wisconsin star John Tonje lands in CBS' latest NBA draft top 100 player ranking
"It was just a surreal year, and I learned so much from playing with the Badgers."Former @BadgerMBB star John Tonje stopped by the studio to discuss his future and memorable season in Madison.#B1GMBBall x @johntonje1 Wisconsin basketball star wing John Tonje is likely to hear his name called during the 2025 NBA draft later this week. Notably, ESPN's latest mock draft recently slotted the now-former Badger No. 42 overall to the Sacramento Kings. CBSSports forecasts a similar pick range -- it has Tonje at No. 44 in its current ranking of the draft's top 100 prospects. The sixth-year senior averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game for the Badgers in 2024-25. He reached that point total on 46.5% shooting from the field, 39% from 3 and 91% from the free-throw line. Those tallies earned him First-Team All-America honors from the Wooden Award, a Second-Team All-America selection from nearly every other outlet and a consensus First-Team All-Big Ten selection. There is a question of how Tonje's top-end college production will translate to the NBA level, especially at his older age of 24. Enough NBA teams seem sold on that translation, as the 6-foot-5 wing's draft stock has steadily improved since the season's conclusion. His strong NBA combine performance and several notable workouts played major roles. Tonje is likely to hear his name called on Day 2 of the NBA draft on Friday. When he does, he'll become the first Badger selected since Johnny Davis went No. 10 overall to the Washington Wizards in 2022, and the second since Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker each went in the first round in 2015. Michigan outlasts Rutgers on buzzer-beating 3 to keep pace with Michigan State atop Big Ten standings
March is just around the corner, but the Big Ten decided to give us an early taste of that magical month. Specifically, the state of Michigan has found quite the flair for the dramatic. Just one night after Michigan State stayed atop the Big Ten standings with a stunning half-court buzzer beater, archrival Michigan kept pace with a deep dagger of its own. Down 82-81 with the clock rapidly draining, Michigan coach Dusty May called timeout with 3.3 seconds left to draw up a final play. The result may not have been according to plan, but his Wolverines did what they have done all season: find a way to scrape out a victory. A sloppy inbound got the ball to Danny Wolf, a big man with tremendous passing vision, in a tough spot atop the key. He did not panic, though, and found Nimari Burnett lurking high on the left wing for a chance to win. Burnett did the rest, and the Wolverines secured an 84-82 win. MICHIGAN WINS IT AT THE BUZZER ‼️‼️#B1GMBBall x @umichbball — Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) February 28, 2025 Michigan has still not won a game by more than four points since Jan. 12; remarkably, the Wolverines are 9-3 in that span. They have now set the record for the most conference wins by four points or fewer. This latest bit of heroics allowed the Wolverines to keep pace with the Spartans, as both teams are 14-3 and in a tie for first place. The season finale rematch on March 9 between the two in East Lansing could be for all the marbles. Advertisement That shot was particularly special for Burnett, one of the few Wolverines who stayed in Ann Arbor through the coaching change after last year's 8-24 debacle. The redshirt senior also battled through a torn ACL in his college career, so having a game like he did — 20 points, plus the game-winner — had to feel sweet. The Wolverines' other veteran, Will Tschetter, poured in 16 points of his own off the bench, and May praised both for playing through illness in a postgame interview. For Rutgers, that shot had to feel like yet another gut punch in a disappointing season. Freshman phenom Dylan Harper's shoulders sagged after Burnett's shot dropped through, as if to say, 'what else can go wrong?' A campaign that started with buoyant optimism in Piscataway, N.J., has given way to a slog of a season, with the entire roster (and Harper especially) battling through both injury and illness for long stretches of time. The Scarlet Knights have the talent to go on a run in the Big Ten Tournament. Their ceiling is immensely high when Harper and Bailey both play well and the role players make shots. They still have to ensure an appearance in the postseason, though, as Rutgers is now tied with four other teams at 11 conference losses. After Thursday night's heartbreak, the Scarlet Knights must find some momentum on Saturday at reeling Purdue.

No. 15 Michigan beats Rutgers 84-82 on Burnett's 3-pointer at buzzer, moves into 1st-place tie
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Nimari Burnett made a long 3-pointer at the buzzer, lifting No. 15 Michigan to an 84-82 win over Rutgers on Thursday night and into a first-place tie in the Big Ten with rival Michigan State. NIMARI BURNETT FROM THE PARKING LOT! 🤯 MICHIGAN WINS IT AT THE BUZZER! #B1GMBBall — NBC Sports (@NBCSports) February 28, 2025 The Wolverines (22-6, 14-3 Big Ten) rallied after trailing by 12 in the second half. The Scarlet Knights (14-15, 7-11) went ahead with 12.2 seconds left when Tyson Acuff made two free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer, but they couldn't make one last stop. Rutgers, which led by 13 in a 106-point first half, was ahead 74-62 midway through the second. Michigan went on a 14-2 run to tie it with 4:33 left and made enough shots and stops to win. Vladislav Goldin had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Burnett finished with 20 points, Will Tschetter scored 16 and Danny Wolf added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Wolverines. Rutgers freshman Lathan Sommerville scored 10 of his season-high 17 points in the second half when the highly touted players in his class, Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, cooled off. Harper finished with 17 points and Bailey had 13 after both scored 11 in the first half, helping their team score 57 points in 20 minutes. Takeaways Rutgers: Steve Pikiell has his highest-scoring team in nine seasons at the school, but the Scarlet Knights are not playing the type of defense they usually have under their coach. Michigan: The Wolverines made just five shots beyond the arc for the third straight game, attempting 20-plus each time. Key moment Burnett's 3-pointer from deep on the left wing won the game just before time expired. Key stat Rutgers shot 68% in the first half. Up next Michigan hosts Illinois on Sunday, and Rutgers visits No. 20 Purdue on Tuesday night. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here.
