Peter Kay's Car Share star Sian Gibson on her acting career
Sian Gibson, from Mold, is best known for her collaboration with comedian Peter Kay in BAFTA Award winning series, Car Share. And it was that, she says, which led to her acting career getting back on track, having virtually given up on the dream. Gibson recently sat down with Woman's Hour presenter Kylie Pentelow to discuss that and the upcoming return of the hit BBC comedy 'The Power of Parker' in which she also stars. That returns for a second series on Friday (May 30) and also stars the likes of Conleth Hill and Steve Pemberton. Gibson co-wrote the show and stars as Kath, a mobile hairdresser by trade and the devoted mistress of her sister's husband. Set around the fortunes of the Parker family's electrical shop in 1990s Stockport, the next instalment sees a shift of power between the trio of Kath, her sister Diane and the object of their affection, Martin Parker. Speaking on Woman's Hour, Gibson talked of how Peter Kay's Car Share led to other opportunities for her acting-wise, after she had been working in a call centre. She said: "Like many other actors, the work's not always there. I was very lucky when I left college that I could still play teenagers, but then I hit my 30's and the work really dried up. I wasn't getting any auditions. "I was very lucky that Peter Kay's carshare came along and that Peter thought of me. I was very very lucky to have a friend who supported me like that." TOP STORIES She added: "It was a massive sliding doors moment, because I live in north Wales, where I live its not the centre of the entertainment world. "I was happy, I wasn't absolutely gutted that this could be the end of the career or the dream. "But, I still live in the same place, the same village, so things haven't changed that much."

Lorraine Kelly's retirement plans will see her move back to Scotland as ITV makes cuts
Lorraine Kelly previously said she will "end up" coming back to Scotland but this may be coming a lot sooner than expected due to widespread speculation she will quit her show in response to the ITV cuts. Lorraine Kelly has confirmed her retirement plans involve a move back home to Scotland but it seems this may now be happening a lot sooner than originally planned due to the announcement of the ITV cuts which will see Lorraine's show being halved in air time from January 2026. Born in Glasgow, the 65-year-old started out her TV career in 1984 and previously presented Good Morning Britain and GMTV before launching her own Lorraine show in 2010. However, after 15 years on screens, ITV announced earlier this month that the Lorraine show would face significant cuts, with the programme being reduced from one hour to 30 minutes and will now only air 30 weeks a year. It comes amid figures that show the Scots presenter missed almost half of her show last year, presenting only 152 out of 256 episodes of the Lorraine show in 2024. Lorraine's absence has continued into this year after she took time off earlier this month while undergoing emergency surgery to remove her fallopian tubes and ovaries. The mum-of-one reportedly learned of the ITV bloodbath cuts upon her return and is said to be willing to take 'extreme measures' to fight for the future of her long term show. Despite this, Lorraine reportedly turned down an offer from ITV to combine her daytime programme with Good Morning Britain which would have seen the Scots presenter take over the last half hour of the morning news talk show. The BAFTA Award winner, who was last year praised for her outstanding contribution to the small screen, is said to have been "insulted" by this proposition and made it clear to ITV bosses that it wasn't on the cards. Many are now speculating that Lorraine may walk away from her daytime show for good with online bookmaker Betway putting the odds of Lorraine quitting at just 2/1 . Lorraine previously revealed that she has discussed leaving England behind and making a return to her home country of Scotland. Recalling a conversation she had with her daughter, the presenter previously told The People's Friend Special: "Rosie and I were talking about it the other day and we think we'll eventually all end up coming back to Scotland. I miss Dundee a lot. Rosie loved it there and still does. Lorraine has also acknowledged her large amount of absences in the past year, with an X account titled Where Is Lorraine? tracking whether or not she has presented the programme every day, revealing this week she only hosted 59.4% of episodes last year. Lorraine previously addressed the existence of this account on Woman's Hour saying: "The amount of space I occupy in people's heads is quite bizarre. "It's fine, I don't mind, I don't care. You should never comment on things like that if you don't know what's going on in people's lives, but I am having to take quite a few Fridays off because my mum is really not well. "So, I can go home now and spend some more time with her and help her more than I've been able to. So that's happening now but that will change. I've been doing five days a week for 40 years so I'm just taking a wee bit of time off." Lorraine Kelly's mother, Anne 81, lives in East Kilbride which could be another reason why the presenter is keen to head back to Scotland. Until 2017, Lorraine lived in Dundee with her husband Steve but the couple now live in a riverside property in Buckinghamshire. Speaking of the future of her show, she previously told The Yorkshire Post: "I'd like to keep on doing my show for as long as people want to watch. "I didn't expect to still be here (on television) at 65, but I am so happy to be doing the job I love after 40 years." However, as it turns out the Lorraine show figures appear to have actually peaked during her on and off absence with an insider saying: 'February, March and April celebrated the highest viewing figures for three years. The show reaches 1.1 million every day and 2.7 million every week.'

Netflix fans have just days left to see 'must watch' documentary that changed everything
Centred around the captivity of Tilikum, an orca that was blamed for the deaths of three humans, Blackfish speaks to the consequences of keeping these wild creatures in captivity and features footage from some of the actual attacks. 'You won't forget Cowperthwaite's documentary, and you shouldn't,' says one critic of the 2013 documentary film, Blackfish. Having premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 2013, Blackfish was picked up by CNN Films and Magnolia Pictures for a wider release. So impactful was Gabriela Cowperthwaite's Blackfish, it was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary. Slated to leave Netflix on 1 June, viewers only have a few days left to catch this cinematically gut-wrenching offering. Centred around the captivity of Tilikum, an orca that was blamed for the deaths of three humans, Blackfish speaks to the consequences of keeping these beautiful, wild creatures in captivity. Featuring footage from some of the actual attacks, the documentary also includes coverage from 1983 — the year Tilikum was captured off the coast of Iceland. Lending an insight into the orca's purported harassment by fellow captive orcas at Sealand, Blackfish sees Cowperthwaite arguing about the contribution of these incidents to Tilikum's fatal aggression. The documentary film also features footage of Tilikum's attacks on trainers and other orcas in captivity, as well as interviews from witnesses and SeaWorld trainers. Cowperthwaite began working on the film following the death of Tilikum's trainer, Dawn Brancheau, in February 2010. The incident sparked speculation that the orca had targeted Brancheau because she wore her hair in a ponytail. Cowperthwaite contended that this was mere conjecture and believed that "there had to be more to this story." The vice president for zoological operations at SeaWorld San Diego - Michael Scarpuzzi, said Blackfish had misused Brancheau's death and its gruesome details not to 'inform the public, but, rather regrettably, because of the desire to sensationalize." He said in a statement: "We have altered how we care for, display and train these extraordinary animals. We have changed the facilities, equipment and procedures at our killer whale habitats. The care and educational presentation of these animals at SeaWorld has been made safer than ever. Does Blackfish inform its viewers of that fact? No, it does not." Critic and audience reviews for the documentary were filled with praise, as people connected to the heartbreaking subject matter of Blackfish. One critic said: 'That Blackfish led SeaWorld to phase out both orca breeding and performances speaks to how we should view the film's legacy over ten years later.' Another one called it: 'An illuminating documentary not only about the cruel conditions that killer whales endure at theme parks such as SeaWorld, but the biology and psychology of the mysterious and majestic sea wolf.' While one review said: 'There are few movies that can change the way you see the world in 83 minutes. If Blackfish is seen by enough people, it has the power to affect attendance at SeaWorld,' another said: '[It] remains decidedly one-sided. But when that "side" is such a vital, convincing proponent for the greater protection and understanding of such evolved and majestic creatures, it can't help but win.' Audiences were blown away by Cowperthwaite's film, as one detailed review said: 'While walking through the St. Louis Zoo recently, my mind kept coming back to this wonderful documentary about the controversial captivity of killer whales used in theme parks, particularly Sea World. And looking into the eyes of the animals we passed, I found my heart breaking just a little. This film has forever altered my feelings about animal confinement for human enjoyment, and that's the mark of a powerful movie. 'The story of an orca named Tilikum, who ended up killing three people, including a whale trainer, is one I will never forget. And the interviews with witnesses and experts are not only informative but often heartrending. I'm an animal lover, not necessarily an animal LOVER, but this documentary gave me a new appreciation and even respect for the creatures around us and how humans often exploit them.' Another viewer said: 'I tear up every time I watch this, so gut-wrenching but so good. It makes me angry about the world and how humans exploit animals, but it also makes me happy to see the people who truly care. This is a MUST SEE!!' One audience review of the documentary bluntly said: 'Really, really, really f*cking disturbing and disgusting. So many moments where it was borderline too hard to watch, but it had to be seen so we could get the intended message and effect.'

BAFTA Awards snub Freddie Flintoff despite his inspiring television comeback
Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff missed out on a BAFTA Award in London on Sunday after making his return to the small-screen following a near-death crash while filming for Top Gear Former sports star and Top Gear presenter Freddie Flintoff was snubbed by BAFTA after making an emotional comeback to our screens. The ex-athlete was left fighting for his life Freddie was up for Best Factual series at this year's ceremony, which was held at London's Royal Festival Hall. His BBC One series Freddie Flintoff's Field of Dreams on Tour had hoped to gain the gong, as it showcased the former cricketer taking a team of unlikely lads from Lancashire to India However, he didn't bag the award, which instead went to a Channel 4 show. The eventual winner was To Catch a Copper, a show which investigated officer misconduct within the Avon and Somerset Police. It shed light on misogyny, abuse of power and racial profiling in the process of the show. Despite Freddie not being honoured at the BAFTAs this time around, he has signed up for another series of the show. This time, the team will be all girls, according to reports. Speaking to the Sun, a source said: "Freddie didn't see why the young women in Preston shouldn't get the same chances as the boys, particularly as more and more female teams are popping up across the country. "After all, the whole point of the show is to provide equal opportunities and use the sport to help people regardless of their background. So why should gender be a barrier?" Following his first time back on screen, Freddie has since candidly shared his recovery in a revealing documentary on Disney+. The show revealed his horrifying injuries. It also shows a close up of the three-wheeled car he was driving for the first time. Surgeon Jahrad Haq, who treated Flintoff at the time, told the documentary the star's injuries were "very complex'. Following his near-death crash, Freddie suffered a mixture of hard and soft tissue injuries, broken teeth, lost teeth and elements of the upper jaw bone that were also fractured and displaced. Mr Haq went on: 'He lost a really significant portion of his upper lip - the skin and some of the underlying muscle - and also his lower lip.' Mr Haq said the injuries were in the "top five" in terms of severity of those he had seen during his career. The injuries were so bad that Freddie's wife fought back tears when she first saw him. She also warned their four children of what to expect. She recalled in the documentary: 'When I did see him, I walked in the room, and he was just in the bed, and he was bandaged up.
