Woman denies murdering dad of six on Christmas Day
A woman has denied murdering a "well-loved" father of six on Christmas Day along with three other charges relating to him. Kirsty Carless, 33, appeared at Stafford Crown Court via video link on Friday, where she pleaded not guilty to murdering Louis Price, 31. She spoke only to enter her pleas and confirm she could hear the court and said, "Thank you, judge", at the end of the 15-minute hearing. Police said they were called to a report of a man in cardiac arrest at a property on Elm Road in Norton Canes, near Cannock, just before 03:00 GMT on 25 December. Despite medical efforts, Mr Price died a short time later. Carless, of Haling Way in Cannock, denied murder and three other charges of possessing a kitchen knife in a taxi on 25 December; intentionally strangling Mr Price on 11 November; and causing actual bodily harm to Mr Price on the same day. Judge Kristina Montgomery KC said Carless would have to appear in person in front of the trial judge for a pre-trial hearing on 11 July. The trial is expected to start on 14 July and last for three weeks. In a statement released through Staffordshire Police, Mr Price's family described him as a "well-known member of the community" who was "well-loved" and always smiling. They said: "He always had time for anyone and would help anyone he could. "Louis was a devoted fisherman, he had a passion for fishing and regularly went away on trips with friends and family. "He loved football, he played for a team and was a lifelong supporter of Aston Villa. "As a family we are devastated at losing Louis. Life will never be the same without him, he leaves a huge hole in the lives of everyone who knew him. "Christmas is a time we have always spent together as a family, to lose Louis at this time is even harder." He had four daughters and two sons, who he loved dearly, they said. Reform council leader defends by-election cost
The Reform UK leader of a council has accused other political parties of hypocrisy over their reaction to the cost of a by-election, after one of his councillors resigned. Wayne Titley won the Eccleshall and Gnosall ward for Reform earlier in May but faced criticism over a social media post around immigration and stepped down. His resignation means a by-election at an estimated £27,000 cost and the Conservative leader on the council called it a "waste of money". But Ian Cooper, for Reform, said he would not "take any lectures from the other parties". "If you look at Staffordshire alone, Conservative MP Chris Pincher stood down, if you look at the figures, parliamentary by-elections cost in the region of £250,000," he added. "You always get people that drop out, Mr Titley decided to drop out, we move forward." But Conservative group leader Philip White described the resignation as shocking. "I asked the leader of the council to apologise for that, for the waste of money, £27,000 we're told and for putting the people of Eccleshall and Gnosall through an unnecessary by-election process," he said. "He refused to apologise." Thursday saw the first meeting of the new county council since the election. Questions at the gathering from opposition councillors, about issues such as special needs provision, highways and budgets, were met with the same line of response from Reform UK cabinet members. They said they would wait to "mark the homework" of the previous Tory-led administration before responding. Cooper added that he would like to repeat that council work had only just started for the newly elected Reform members. "There is a settling in period, steep learning curve for everyone involved," he said. "In the background we've got things going on. We have a forward plan to think about". Thatched roof blaze caused by lorry hitting cables
A thatched cottage caught fire after overhead cables were knocked down by a lorry, police have said. Seven fire engines were sent to the large blaze on Main Street in Swynnerton, Staffordshire, at about 13:00 BST on Tuesday. The flames had spread along the ridge of the cottage before they were brought under control and extinguished, with crews leaving the scene at midnight. Nobody was injured and Staffordshire Police said it was deemed to have been started by "a lorry colliding with the overhead electrical cables, causing them to fall onto the thatched roof". A force spokesperson said the investigation was ongoing and has urged anyone with information to get in touch. Follow BBC Stoke & Staffordshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram.
