'BBQ Brawl''s Season 6 Has a New Twist — Why Bobby Flay Likes the Change (Exclusive)
The sixth season of BBQ Brawl premiered on Food Network on Sunday, June 1 Flay tells PEOPLE new captains Maneet Chauhan and Antonia Lofaso give the show "renewed energy" Season 6 also features a new rule in which the winner of the first challenge gets to pick their captainBBQ Brawl's sixth season premiered earlier this week with a new twist: The winner of the first challenge gets to pick their captain. Bobby Flay, who faces off with fellow captains Maneet Chauhan and Antonia Lofaso, says the shakeup from previous seasons, in which captains picked their entire teams, changes the dynamic — in a good way. 'We always want to be that person because everybody has an ego,' Flay tells PEOPLE. 'And so it kind of got turned around on us for a second, which I actually liked.' The first episode, which aired Sunday, June 1, saw chef Aarthi Sampath choose to be on Lofaso's team. Flay says the new season has 'serious renewed energy,' thanks to the addition of Lofaso and Chauhan. 'When I asked them to do this, they prepared themselves so incredibly well for so long prior to shooting this,' he recalls. 'I mean, they did tons of research. They were practicing, cooking, all this sort of live-fire cooking, and they really brought their own sort of energy and attitude and obviously flavors to it. And I will say that they kept me on my toes the entire time.' The culinary star adds that Lofaso is 'all about impactful flavors.' 'She's so intense in her mentoring in the best way,' he explains. 'She's very dedicated to her team. She wants them to do really well. She's almost kind of like a proud mom to them.' Chauhan, he observes, is 'a master with Indian flavors and ingredients.' 'It was really interesting watching those ingredients come to life in this sort of very classic American function of barbecue,' he notes. The new season, set at Star Hill Ranch in Austin, Texas, sees 12 new brawlers face off in teams led by Flay, Chauhan and Lofaso, aiming to win over returning judges Carson Kressley, Brooke Williamson (whom Flay began dating earlier this year) and Rodney Scott. Flay says the series' contestants tend to be 'students of the show.' 'They pay very close attention,' he says. 'Obviously, I've been on every season, so they kind of know what I like and what I don't like, what my style's going to be, how I'm going to mentor them, and those kinds of things.' 'They don't know who the other two mentors are going to be until they get there, but I think that every season, they seem to be better,' he continues. 'And I think it's not that everybody's better than the prior seasons, but they're just more schooled. So they know, they kind of drill down on what they need to do to win.' When it comes to fan reactions to the long-running series, which premiered in 2019, Flay says 'everybody has an opinion' on barbecue. 'And so we get a lot of feedback of, 'I wouldn't have done it that way and my grandfather would've never thought that was good.' And then people are like, 'I can't believe I have all these new ideas about barbecue. I never thought about it that way.' So it kind of goes both ways. But the one thing about it is people are watching it and they're interested in it and I love when people have opinions about stuff. I think if it was all just good or all just not good, there's no reason to watch. But when there's a conversation about it, which there is tons of conversation about BBQ Brawl, it works.' Bobby Flay Says Girlfriend Brooke Williamson Is a Good Match
Celebrity chef Bobby Flay didn't hold back when asked about his new girlfriend Brooke Williamson. Based on Flay's most recent comments, the romance is going very strong. Both Flay and Williamson are starring on the show BBQ Brawl. They started out as professional friends before the relationship turned romantic. 'Well, first of all, I've been friends with Brooke forever,' he told People on June 4. 'I mean, she and I have been friends for a long time and so we shot this show before we started actually officially dating. So it has always kind of been the same for me.' Both Flay and Williamson are divorced with kids, and that has bonded them, he told People, saying, 'I love working with Brooke. We have a lot in common. We're very lucky. We're both chefs. We both have kids. We're both parents.' They've starred in other shows together but have only let the public know about their relationship since March. 'We are both in the restaurant business,' he told People. 'We have tons to talk about in terms of the things that we love to do besides just go and have dinner every once in a while. So it's been really great. And one of the things I really like about being in a relationship with Brooke is that she's great to bounce things off of. Like we ask each other's opinion about things that we're doing food wise or restaurant wise or business wise, all the time. So it's really nice to have kind of a best friend that you're dating that can also be helpful answering the questions that you have.' Flay has gushed about Williamson before. On his Instagram story on May 15, 2025, a fan asked Flay, 'If you had to compete as a team, who would you choose as your teammate?' He responded, according to People, 'I'll take @chefbrookew. I know our food would get an upgrade in terms of presentation. She makes delicious food, but it's always pretty too (like her).'Bobby Flay Says Girlfriend Brooke Williamson Is a Good Match first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 7, 2025

Super Bowl BBQ Po' Boys from Food Network pitmaster: Try the recipe
For Super Bowl Sunday, it's a sure thing that Erica Blaire Roby will be serving barbecue to her guests. "If it's coming from my kitchen, it's going to be barbecue-related," the Houston-based champion pitmaster told Fox News Digital. (See the video at the top of this article.) Roby won the Food Network's "BBQ Brawl" title of "Master of 'Cue" — and has won other barbecue cooking titles as well. But she did not grow up in a kitchen or tend to a barbecue pit as a child. She was a lawyer before pivotins toward the food industry in 2014. Initially, Roby became certified as a sommelier and then, after having a child in 2018, she found herself at home. "So I would call my dad all the time on the phone. He's from New Orleans," she said. "And we always just talked about his bucket list and what he wanted to do. He said that he had always wanted to have a barbecue restaurant." This revelation came as a shock to Roby, who said that opening a restaurant with her father had "never been on my radar." "We both realized that neither one of us knew how to run a restaurant or to cook barbecue. So I went online and found barbecue classes," she said. Roby took to cooking barbecue, entering competitions and sharing her creations on social media. That led to a call from the Food Network, which asked her to audition for "BBQ Brawl." Initially, Roby was intimidated by "all of these barbecue legends" she had seen on television, she said. "I called my dad and I was like, 'Dad, I have good news and bad news. The good news is, I'm going to be home very, very quickly. So you're not going to have to watch my kid for very long. The bad news is, I'm going to publicly embarrass our family on national television,'" she said. Her father suggested she go by her middle name and style herself as "Erica Blaire, for Blue Smoke Blaire Barbecue." Roby dedicated her life to barbecue and "spreading barbecue love." On the show, she started "really leaning into" her Creole New Orleans roots to cook – "and those dishes started winning," Roby said. The next thing she knew, she said, "I'm announced as Food Network's 'Master of 'Cue.'" After that, Roby dedicated her life to barbecue and "spreading barbecue love." Although New Orleans is not necessarily known for barbecue, "it has a lot of rich cultural history when it comes to culinary and food," she said. Incorporating the spices and ingredients of Cajun cooking with the smoke and meats of barbecue was a way to add an "element without actually changing the integrity of the tradition of the cuisine," Roby said. "And that was something that's really beautiful. It's unexpected." Roby shared one of her hybrid Cajun barbecue recipes with Fox News Digital. With Super Bowl LIX taking place in New Orleans, this is a great dish to celebrate with some Big Easy flair, she said. Gravy and Beef 2 cups leftover beef (shredded) 2 tablespoons butter or oil 1 onion, chopped or sliced 1 bell pepper, chopped or sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1½ cups beef broth 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon BBQ Rub Salt and pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon flour or cornstarch (optional, for thickening) Sandwich 4 French bread rolls or hoagie rolls, split Lettuce, shredded Tomato, sliced Pickles, sliced Mayonnaise 1. Sauté the vegetables. In a skillet or saucepan, heat the butter or oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and bell pepper and cook until soft and caramelized, about 5 to 7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. For more Lifestyle articles, visit 2. For gravy: Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce and BBQ rub to the skillet, stirring well to combine. Bring to a low simmer. For a thicker gravy, sprinkle in the flour or make a cornstarch slurry by combing two tablespoons of cold water with one tablespoon of cornstarch in a separate bowl and stir. Slowly add this slurry to the gravy and stir until thickened. 3. Stir in the shredded leftover beef, letting it warm through in the gravy for about five minutes. Season with salt and pepper as needed. 4. Assemble the Po' Boys: Spread mayonnaise on each French bread roll. Layer with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles. Spoon the smothered beef and gravy onto each roll. This recipe is owned by Erica Blaire Roby and was shared with Fox News Digital.
