Record Breaking Heat Returns Big Country: Temps could reach triple digits today, tomorrow

BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The heat isn't backing down, and neither should your summer safety habits. Temperatures across the Big Country are climbing once again, with triple digits possible today and lingering into tomorrow. Without a doubt, most people reading this are no stranger to the heat, but this early-season blast is bringing more than just sweat. It's also bringing health risks and near-record highs. Forecast highs for much of the region are expected to rise into the upper 90s, with tomorrow being the exception for another triple digit day. Expect the hottest part of the day to take place during those afternoon hours. There is also a high expectance for us to break records today, with temperatures quickly rising. The record set for today, May 13, was 100 degrees in 2022. Tomorrow, there is still a chance for records to be beat; however, they are not as likely. The record for May 14 was 105 degrees in 1960. Currently, no Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect for today or tomorrow within our viewing counties. However, it would not be surprising to see this change in the upcoming hours. As always, stay cool when you can. Be sure to drink plenty of water and know your limits when dealing with extreme heat. In addition, don't expect much relief from the sky. Rain chances remain slim across the region this weekend, with only a stray afternoon shower or two currently in the forecast. Your Big Country Storm Team is here to keep you informed and safe. The heat strikes back: Big Country braces for dry, blazing week ahead

BIG COUNTRY, Texas () – Get those pools ready, because the Big Country could see some drastic temperature changes in the near future. The Big Country has enjoyed a brief stretch of mild temperatures and even saw some recent improvements on the drought monitor, thanks to the much-needed rainfall in recent weeks. As we look ahead to next week, the weather pattern is shifting once again, and unfortunately, it is not in our favor. Local lakes surge, but Abilene's water levels remain low Temperatures are expected to rise steadily over the coming days, pushing us back to that familiar summer-time heat we West Texans love so much. That was a joke. In all seriousness, though, expect highs to climb into the mid-90s by midweek. While triple digits are not currently in the forecast, it is still possible that some of our counties could see those come Tuesday. In addition to rising temperatures, the more concerning risk is the lack of rainfall in the forecast. After recently benefiting from several rounds of storms and showers, we are now looking at another dry spell. Rain chances are practically zero next week, with dry air and high pressure dominating the atmosphere. Unfortunately, this dry spell comes at a bad time. The latest update from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed minor improvements across some of our western counties. Without additional rainfall, though, these counties and others could easily worsen. This can also lead to dried-out vegetation and elevated wildfire risks. Mother's Day Weekend Forecast: Beautiful weather in the forecast As always, stay cool when you can. Be sure to drink plenty of water and know your limits when dealing with extreme heat. Your Big Country Storm Team is here to keep you informed and safe.
