Filipino immigrant wins Canada's largest-ever lottery jackpot

[Source] Justin Simporios, a Filipino immigrant in British Columbia has won the largest individual lottery prize in Canadian history, claiming the entire $80 million Canadian dollars ($57 million) Lotto Max jackpot from the May 9 draw. The 35-year-old resident of Surrey became an instant multi-millionaire after purchasing a Quick Pick ticket at a Walmart in Central Surrey while shopping for hamburger ingredients. A life-changing ticket Simporios said he usually buys tickets only when the jackpot exceeds $40 million Canadian dollars. On the night of the draw, he checked the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) website and saw that the winning ticket had been sold in Surrey. After comparing his numbers under a flashlight while his daughter slept, he realized he had matched all seven. He immediately woke his wife to share the life-changing news. Trending on NextShark: A historic win The BCLC confirmed Simporios was the sole winner of the May 9 draw. The winning numbers were 06, 10, 16, 17, 30, 38 and 48. Plans for the future Trending on NextShark: Simporios, who has lived in Surrey for four years, resigned from his job at a logistics company before the win was publicly announced. He plans to use his newfound wealth to buy a home, help his mother retire early, pay off his sister's medical school debt and support local charities. 'I'm an immigrant. I came from a poor country. Like, this money's a lot, right? I've been struggling. I'm a father. I work full time,' Simporios said. "This is so much money for us … I really want to give back to the community as much as I can,' he added. B.C. man says $500K lottery win ‘feels the same as how I felt when I caught this big trout'

Lottery winner Bill Cash is seen in this image handed out by the BCLC. The vast majority of people will never know what it's like to win the lottery, but a recent B.C. winner says it's comparable to a far more common experience. A Prince George resident—fittingly named Bill Cash—netted a $500,000 Extra prize from the May 9 Lotto Max draw. When the B.C. Lottery Corporation asked what it felt like to win, Cash had this to say: 'It feels the same as how I felt when I caught this big trout the other day.' Cash reeled in the winning ticket while stopping for gas at Four Rivers Co-Op on Westgate Avenue, according to the BCLC. He first shared the news with his daughter. 'She said I was full of it,' he remembers. Cash plans to put some of his windfall toward an investment portfolio, and is looking into buying a classic 1957 convertible. According to the BCLC, lottery players in the province have redeemed more than $18 million from the Extra and $102 million from Lotto Max so far in 2025. The odds of winning the top Lotto Max Extra prize are approximately one in 3.7 million.

Richmond, B.C. youth arrested in BCLC PlayNow cyberattack

Richmond RCMP say a 'youth suspect' has been arrested for allegedly participating in a cyberattack on the B.C. Lottery Corporation's (BCLC) PlayNow iGaming website. The BCLC first detected the attack last July, when it noticed a suspiciously high volume of traffic on the site. The Crown corporation's cybersecurity team later determined it was facing a 'credential stuffing' attack, in which a malicious actor try to get into users' accounts with email and password combinations hacked or stolen from other websites. That prompted the BCLC to issue a notice to users urging them to change their passwords. 'Based on all situational factors and in consultation with BCLC, Richmond RCMP have elected to proceed with the restorative justice program under the Youth Criminal Justice Act for the offences which were attributed to the youth,' the RCMP said. Restorative justice refers to a voluntary process that aims to repair the harm caused by an offender rather than simply punishing them, and can involve a variety of forms including apologies, restitution, community service or counselling.

Lottery Corporation's PlayNow user accounts. In July 2024, BCLC became aware of a suspiciously high volume of traffic on its iGaming site, the RCMP said in news release Wednesday. BCLC's cybersecurity team determined the traffic was the result of credential stuffing. RCMP describe this as a practice in which criminals attempt to gain access to user accounts using emails and passwords leaked or stolen from other websites. According to BCLC, an estimated 250,000 attempts were made to gain unauthorized access to PlayNow user accounts. RCMP said the BCLC notified affected players that their accounts had been locked due to suspicious activity and took measures to block the suspicious traffic.
