Festivals abound this weekend in Metro Vancouver

The Vancouver skyline is seen from CTV News Vancouver's Chopper 9 in October 2018. (Pete Cline) The first full weekend of June brings no fewer than four free street festivals to check out in Metro Vancouver. From Italian Day on the Drive to Car Free Day in Newton, here's a look at what's happening across the region. BC Lions' Concert Kickoff Snoop Dogg headlines the BC Lions' annual Concert Kickoff this Saturday at BC Place. The legendary rapper is scheduled to take the stage at 5:45 p.m., and kickoff of the Lions' CFL opener against the Edmonton Elks is scheduled for 7 p.m. More than 50,000 tickets have been sold, leaving the team expecting a season-opening sellout for the second year in a row. Italian Day on the Drive Arguably the biggest and most established of the weekend's street festivals is Italian Day on the Drive, which will take over Commercial Drive between North Grandview Highway and Venables Street from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Vancouver's annual celebration of Italian food, heritage and culture features seven stages with live entertainment – not only music, but also a fashion show and multiple pasta-eating contests – spread along the 14-block street closure. More information, including a performance schedule and a map, can be found on the Italian Day website. Italian Day on the Drive Italian Day on the Drive 2024 drew crowds on Sunday, June 9. (CTV News/Jordan Jiang) West Vancouver Community Cultural Fest Before Vancouver celebrates its historic Little Italy on Sunday, West Vancouver will be hosting a multicultural celebration in Ambleside Park on Friday night and Saturday. Featuring cultural pavilions representing many of the diverse backgrounds that make up the West Vancouver community, along with live performances on multiple stages and food vendors serving flavours from around the world, West Vancouver Community Cultural Fest is intended to unify and celebrate the district's residents. The festival is open from 4 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Burnaby Heights Hats Off Day Burnaby Heights will celebrate its local community with a festival this weekend, too. Hats Off Day began in the early 1980s as a way for local businesses to say 'hats off' to the neighbourhood that supported them throughout the year. Over the decades, it has grown into an annual parade and street party that shuts down Hastings Street between Boundary Road and Gamma Avenue. This year's theme is 'Disco Fever!' The festival begins with a 'Family Fun Dash' at 9:30 a.m., followed by the parade at 10 a.m. and the street party from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hats Off Day 2024 Hats Off Day 2024 is seen in this photo from the event's website ( / Lisa King / TwinLens Photography) (Twinlens Photography/TwinLens Photography) Car Free Day Newton This weekend also marks the start of Car Free Days of Summer, with a portion of 137 Street in Surrey's Newton neighbourhood closing to traffic for Car Free Day from noon to 8 p.m. The closure stretches from 72A Avenue to 74 Avenue, with three stages of live entertainment, mini golf, a climbing wall, bounce houses and more activities for all ages. Food trucks and an artisan market will also be set up for the festival. The full performance schedule can be found on the Car Free Day Surrey website. Doors Open Richmond A less centralized kind of celebration is happening in Richmond this weekend, as businesses and organizations around the city welcome visitors for the annual Doors Open Richmond event. Organized by Richmond Museum, the event brings together more than 50 partner sites – including art studios, national historic sites, farms and religious organizations – that highlight the diversity of the city. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. More information about each participating location and its offerings can be found on the museum's website. Public Disco Block Party Public Disco – which hosts both free and ticketed dance parties in public spaces around Vancouver throughout the summer – is kicking off its 2025 season with a two-day block party on Granville Island. The free, all-ages event takes place from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with distinct 'musical journeys' planned for each day. In addition to DJ sets, the event will feature a food market, two bars and a kids zone. More information can be found on the Public Disco website. Public Disco Granville Island Last year's Public Disco event on Granville Island is shown in this photo from its website. ( Weekend craft and artisan markets Several special market events are also planned around Metro Vancouver this weekend, beyond the ones taking place as part of larger festivals or ongoing events. The Vancouver Whitecaps said a 'significant number' of players who traveled to Mexico for last weekend's CONCACAF Champions Cup final have become ill. The Whitecaps canceled practice Wednesday and had a modified session for cleared players Thursday after both players and staff reported gastrointestinal symptoms. 'The health and well-being of our players and staff remain a top priority. Each player has been provided with an individualized program by the medical and performance staff to support their continued preparation and recovery,' the team said in a statement. The Whitecaps are scheduled to play the Seattle Sounders in a Cascadia Cup rivalry match at BC Place on Sunday. Woman sues B.C. Place after drunk falls on her, leaving permanent injuries

Article content B.C. Place was negligent by putting profit ahead of the safety of patrons at a Luke Combs concert by overserving alcohol, which led to a 'grossly impaired' woman falling on to another woman, causing permanent injuries, a lawsuit filed in B.C. Supreme Court alleges. Article content Article content Jaspreet Boparai filed the lawsuit against B.C. Pavilion Corp., the operator of B.C. Place, Live Nation Canada, which brought the country music megastar to Vancouver, an unnamed security company and the concertgoer who was allegedly drunk at the May 27, 2023, concert, according to the claim. Article content Boparai's lawsuit refers to the woman as Jane Doe, as her identity isn't known, but says she was sitting in seat 104, row DD, section 416. Article content Article content 'Jane Doe, who was impaired by alcohol while attending the concert, fell on to the plaintiff,' the cases says. Article content The lawsuit focuses on the actions and practices of B.C. Place, alleging it was negligent and liable for damages because safeguards to prevent patrons from becoming inebriated were disproportionate to the money raised by alcohol sales. Article content The defendants 'put their own financial interest and gain before the health and safety of the plaintiff' and as a result she was injured, it said. Article content It alleged Jane Doe was either allowed into the concert when she shouldn't have been or 'was served alcohol to the point of impairment, for profit' at the concert by the defendants. Article content Boparai is seeking damages for a list of injuries, which include traumatic brain injury, headaches, injury to the neck, back and shoulders, chronic pain, fatigue, dizziness, and mood and personality changes, it said. Article content Article content She says the injuries caused her unspecified damages, including loss of earning capacity and opportunity to earn, cost of future care, out-of-pocket expenses and loss of ability to perform activities such as household tasks. Article content Article content She also claims other unspecified damages, including for pain and suffering and loss of enjoyment of life, as well as for cost of prescriptions and medical care, such as physiotherapy and massage therapy, it said. Article content The claim alleges the defendants were negligent because they legally owed a duty of care under B.C.'s Occupiers' Act to Boparai and others to ensure B.C. Place was 'managed, supervised and maintained' to make it reasonably safe for patrons. Article content The negligent behaviour including selling or serving alcohol to Jane Doe when 'they knew or ought to have known it was likely to cause her to become impaired and become a danger to other patrons at the concert,' and served her when they knew she was intoxicated, it said.

Harry photobombs selfie with Meghan and Nelly Furtado at Invictus Games ceremony

The Duchess of Sussex joined Canadian singer Nelly Furtado for a selfie video as the pair celebrated the opening of the Invictus Games in Canada. Furtado shared a clip on Instagram of her posing alongside Meghan backstage at the Games' opening ceremony, with the Duke of Sussex appearing to surprise them as he photobombed the clip midway through. The singer was among the musical stars who helped launch the seventh edition of the Games on Saturday with a motivational performance at the BC Place in Vancouver. Alongside the video, Furtado wrote 'they're beautiful, that's for sure', referencing the lyrics of her hit I'm Like A Bird which also played with the clip. During the opening ceremony, the British Columbia-born singer performed a medley of her hits including I'm Like a Bird, Turn Off The Light and Say It Right. The star, dressed in a black jumpsuit, encouraged the crowd to sing along to the performance as a dance troupe joined her on stage. The show also featured performances by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, US pop star Katy Perry, US singer-songwriter Noah Kahan and Quebec alt-pop star Roxane Bruneau. For his opening number, Martin delivered a moving rendition of the Invictus Games anthem, which he created in 2014 using the lyrics of the Invictus poem by William Ernest Henley, while accompanied by the Universal Gospel Choir. He then picked up his guitar to play and sing Coldplay's hit Higher Power alongside four backing singers. Between the songs he thanked Harry for inviting him to perform, saying: 'I'd like to say thanks, of course, to Prince Harry. 'When he called me he said, 'I've called every other musician in the world, they all said they're not available so I have to call you'. And I said 'your royal holiness, I'm honoured'. 'But thank you Harry for being such an inspiring leader and kind and sweet man, and I hope you have the most wonderful games of all. And it's a pleasure to be here.' He finished his set by playing the band's 2008 classic Viva La Vida while the backing singers provided harmonies before he was joined again by the choir. Perry kicked off her performance with a rendition of her hit Roar after Harry delivered his speech to the arena. The US pop star then launched into a high-energy medley of her tracks Dark Horse, Part Of Me and Lifetimes while dressed in a futuristic, silver cut-out outfit with panels which changed colour throughout the performance. She thanked the ceremony for having her and the service personnel and veterans for their service before closing with her huge hit Firework alongside a full marching band, a dance troupe and large yellow dancing figures. After her performance, she said she was 'beyond inspired by the spirit of The Invictus Games and all the competitors' in an Instagram post. Alongside a carousel of pictures and videos of her performing, she added: 'Thanks for letting me chameleon my way through the opening ceremonies.' The show also saw Kahan perform a rousing rendition of his song Northern Attitude alongside his band which got members of the crowd chanting along. He later said it was an 'honour' to be at the Games before he closed his performance with his viral hit Stick Season. The ceremony opened with a performance by members of the traditional territories as the Invictus Games are being held on the land of indigenous nations Lil'wat, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh. Harry and Meghan watched the ceremony, cheering on the performers and competitors when they took to the stage. More than 500 competitors from 23 nations will take part in the Games, which go on until Sunday February 16. Harry, a former British Army captain, launched the Invictus Games in 2014 as an international sports tournament for injured service personnel and veterans. They aim to 'inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who have served their country', the Royal British Legion said. The Invictus Games were held in London in 2014, in Orlando in 2016, Toronto in 2017, Sydney in 2018, The Hague in 2022 and Dusseldorf in 2023.
