BET Awards open with Kevin Hart poking fun at honourees and star-packed performances

(AP Photo/Chris Pizzello) LOS ANGELES — Kevin Hart kicked off the 2025 BET Awards with a flurry of jokes on Monday, poking fun at everything from celebrity names to slippery afterparties. 'There won't be any afterparties tonight. Things could get slippery,' he quipped, referencing baby oil that's been frequently mentioned in the criminal case against Diddy. Hart set the tone for a night full of humor and on a night honoring the awards show's 25th anniversary. The comedian also joked about the pronunciation of GloRilla and Snoop Dogg 's real names, drawing laughs from the crowd before turning sincere. Hart paid tribute to Jamie Foxx and teased gospel star Kirk Franklin, who — along with Snoop and Mariah Carey — was honored with the Ultimate Icon Award for his contributions to entertainment, community work, and advocacy. 'When you get your award tonight, don't come up here front twerking,' Hart said, as the crowd erupted in laughter. The jab was a nod to Franklin's viral moment when he playfully twerked on gospel legend Jacky Clark Chisholm during a live performance. 'Don't come up here poppin',' Hart added, as cameras caught Franklin bowing his head and chuckling. 'Don't try to blame it on the Lord. The Lord didn't ask for that. Put it away, Kirk.' Singer Amerie and rapper Jim Jones were the first performers of the show. The BET Awards is bringing major star power with Kendrick Lamar who leads the pack with 10 nominations, including album of the year for his critically acclaimed project 'GNX.' His ubiquitous diss track 'Not Like Us,' emanating from the Drake feud, received nominations for video of the year and viewer's choice award. The awards are airing live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Lamar made waves with his Grammy triumph, winning song and record of the year for 'Not Like Us.' He followed up with a groundbreaking halftime show, becoming the first solo hip-hop performer to headline the coveted slot. The rap megastar is currently on the Grand National Tour with SZA. Who else is nominated? Doechii, Drake, Future and GloRilla tied for the second-most nominations with six. Metro Boomin pulled in five nods, while SZA and The Weeknd each scored four. Who are the show's performers? Rap icon Lil Wayne, rapper GloRilla and singer Teyana Taylor will hit the BET Awards stage. The lineup of performers also includes rapper Playboi Carti and singer Leon Thomas. Will there be any tributes? The BET Awards will offer tributes to former popular hosts and performances, including the network's once-flagship program '106 & Park. ' ''106 & Park' was more than just a music countdown show; it was the heartbeat of Black youth culture and one of the highest-rated BET programs for over a decade,' said Scott Mills, BET's president and CEO. The weekday show launched in 2000 and lasted for more than a decade. The show thrived with a video countdown, interviews and performances. The show will reunite past hosts A.J. Calloway, Free, Julissa Bermudez, Keshia Chanté, Rocsi Diaz and Terrence J. The tribute will feature performers such as Bow Wow, Amerie, B2K, Jim Jones, Mya, T.I. and Mr. 106 & Park. It is not yet known whether Carey, Snoop, Foxx and Franklin will receive individual tributes during the ceremony. Are there any other standout nominees? There's a competitive list of top-notch actors looking to take home the top award in their category. For best actor, the category includes: Aaron Pierre, Aldis Hodge, Anthony Mackie, Colman Domingo, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Joey Bada$$, Kevin Hart, Sterling K. Brown and Will Smith. For best actress, the nominees include: Andra Day, Angela Bassett, Coco Jones, Cynthia Erivo, Keke Palmer, Kerry Washington, Quinta Brunson, Viola Davis and Zendaya. Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Simone Biles, Angel Reese and Jalen Hurts are among the sports stars competing for awards. Jonathan Landrum Jr., The Associated Press

Jared Leto denies reported sexual misconduct allegations by 9 women

NOTE: The following article contains disturbing details. Please read at your own discretion. Jared Leto has denied allegations of sexual misconduct after multiple women came forward and accused the 53-year-old actor and singer of behaving inappropriately toward them, with some claiming they were underage. In a report published by digital weekly Air Mail on Saturday, nine women alleged that the Suicide Squad actor behaved inappropriately toward them and has a long-standing pattern of sexual misconduct. A representative for Leto told the outlet that 'all of the allegations are expressly denied.' The rep also denied an earlier allegation from Allie Teilz, a DJ who claimed in an Instagram Story posted last month that she was 'assaulted and traumatized' by Leto. His rep said that 'Ms. Teilz's allegations are demonstrably false.' Story continues below advertisement Teilz said she was 17 years old when she had her interaction with Leto. She reposted a 2012 Facebook status update on Instagram last month, writing, 'Youre (sic) not really in L.A. until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage … In a kilt.. And a snow hat.' He knew my age and didn't care. What he did was predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.' He is also accused of asking sexual questions to a 16-year-old girl. 'It's been an open secret for a long time,' an anonymous woman told Air Mail. Story continues below advertisement Another accuser, model Laura La Rue, said she met Leto at an animal rights benefit in 2008 in Beverly Hills, Calif. She said she attended the event with her mom and she told Leto that she was 16 and he still allegedly asked for her number. La Rue said she began exchanging emails with Leto and visited him at his music studio several times. She also said that when she visited Leto's home in April 2009, she remembers him 'teasing me the whole time I was there.' 'He was flirting with me. He'd lean in close, then pull away, like it was a game,' La Rue added. She said when she was 17, Leto walked out of a room completely naked and she 'thought maybe this was just what adult men do.' In response to La Rue's allegations, Leto's rep told Air Mail that 'their communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate.' Story continues below advertisement The rep also claimed that La Rue had 'applied to work as Mr. Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions.' La Rue has denied applying for the position. Another woman said she was 16 years old when Leto approached her at Urth Caffé in Los Angeles in 2008 and 'got' her number. She said that days later, Leto called her home in the middle of the night with the 'weirdest, grossest voice' and she said she didn't 'know if he was on drugs.' Leto's rep disputed her claims and said the singer 'has not had a drink or used drugs in over 35 years.' The woman also alleged that after she turned down an invitation to attend a party, Leto continued to call her in the early mornings over the course of three weeks. 'And the conversations turned sexual,' she alleged. 'He'd ask things like, 'Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever sucked a d—?'' 'He changed — his voice, the way he talked. It scared me. That was the first time I thought, 'Oh my God, that's not just in movies.'' The woman's mother also told the outlet she had overheard a phone call and confirmed her daughter's story. Story continues below advertisement Another anonymous woman said she was underage when she began texting with Leto and claimed the House of Gucci actor would ask her uncomfortable questions when she would visit his home. She said once she turned 18 'he suddenly pulled his penis out and started masturbating.' 'Then he walked over, grabbed my hand, and put it on him,' she alleged. 'He leaned in and said, 'I want you to spit on it.'' Another anonymous woman said she was 'definitely not the youngest person there' when she attended one of Leto's parties at his home in the 2000s when she was 18. She claimed that the focus of the party appeared to be to get girls to skinny-dip in his pool. Leto's rep said 'there was never any recruiting, complaints or impropriety' and nightlife promoter Brent Bolthouse, who organized many parties at Leto's home, told Air Mail he 'never saw anyone skinny-dipping.'

Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg performs ahead of B.C. Lions home opener

Snoop Dogg performs before the Edmonton Elks and the B.C. Lions play a CFL football game in Vancouver, on Saturday, June 7, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ethan Cairns VANCOUVER — Snoop Dogg was a B.C. Lions fan on Saturday — if only for one night. The legendary rapper donned a Lions jersey with the number 20 and his name emblazoned on the back as he took the stage for a concert at B.C. Place before the Lions hosted the Edmonton Elks in their first game of the CFL season. Over the course of a 35-minute set, Snoop Dogg sang several of his hits, including 'P.I.M.P.,' 'Gin and Juice,' and 'Drop it Like it's Hot,' plus abbreviated versions of songs he has featured on, such as Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' and the explicit version of Akon's 'I Wanna Love You.' His dancers and backup singers also donned Lions gear for the show. B.C. previously announced more than 50,000 fans were expected to take in the show. Several hundred danced and sang in the end zone below the elevated stage, while thousands more stood in their seats. A few Lions players and staff — including kicker Sean Whyte and defensive back Patrice Rene — took in parts of the show from the sidelines. Snoop Dogg has been making music for more than three decades and has seven platinum records, 20 Grammy Award nominations, and multiple BET Awards and MTV Movie Awards. He has become a pop culture icon known for working with a variety of entertainers from rapper-producer Dr. Dre to television personality Martha Stewart, and was a roving correspondent for NBC at last summer's Paris Olympics. The 53-year-old musician closed his set Saturday by signing several footballs and handing them out to kids in the end zone. 'You've got to promise to grow up to be a B.C. Lion,' he said to one. 'You getting good grades in school?' he asked another. Before leaving the stage, Snoop Dogg signed yet another football, removed his trademark sunglasses and the gold, bejewelled Wu-Tang Clan ring on his pinky, and handed off his gold microphone. He then launched the ball into the upper deck of the stands. He formed his hands into a heart and clapped for the crowd, then left before the game got underway. Big concerts have become an annual tradition for the Lions. Last year, the team launched its season with a performance by rapper 50 Cent that drew an announced crowd of 53,788. This report by Gemma Karstens-Smith, The Canadian Press, was first published June 7, 2025.
