BCSO announces DWI enforcement results for first quarter

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Broome County Sheriff's Office is cracking down on impaired driving as part of its STOP-DWI Program. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar announced the results of the first quarter of targeted DWI response conducted by BCSO Road Patrol in 2025. The Sheriff's Office implemented the STOP-DWI Program in January. The initiative is a partnership with the Broome County District Attorney's Office to fund an additional patrol deputy specifically to target drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. From January 1 to April 1, the DWI Enforcement Deputy charged 24 people with DWI misdemeanors. In addition, deputies conducted 275 vehicle stops, made 44 arrests, and issued 287 tickets. 'Individuals who operate motor vehicles while intoxicated and or impaired jeopardize the health, safety and welfare of motorists and pedestrians in our community. As a result, our office is committed to aggressively assist with detection, enforcement, and prosecution of these operators. By financially supporting a full-time Broome County Sheriff's Deputy to patrol countywide to maintain the safety and security of our community has proven to be successful. We will continue to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies to achieve our goal maintain the safety and security of all roadways.' said District Attorney, Paul Battisti. Countywide, DWI charges between all law enforcement agencies have increased by nearly 38%.
