First look at new national beach volleyball centre in Birmingham
Images have been released showing the first designs for a new national training centre for beach volleyball in of four courts, the all-weather sports facility will be built on the Moor Lane site at Birmingham City University (BCU). The university has described it as a "landmark" facility that they say will "transform beach volleyball performance in the UK".Designed to support England's elite beach volleyball programme, the university says the facility will be the first of its kind in Europe, enabling year-round training regardless of weather will begin once final planning is approved, with completion due this autumn. Purpose-built for elite performance, the centre reuses sand and infrastructure from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where England's Javier and Joaquin Bello clinched England chief executive, Charlie Ford, said: "We are delighted to be in a position where work is expected to start imminently after we have worked through some site complexities that have delayed the original timescale slightly."Seeing these images, and having met with staff from BCU who are equally excited about this project as we are, it really brings home what a seminal moment this is for beach volleyball in this country."In years gone by, it's been difficult to have a joined-up approach without a facility that can bring together our most talented players to train regularly, but that will soon now be a reality ... and we can't wait." BCU's sport development officer, Phil Llewellyn, said: "BCU is delighted to have partnered with Volleyball England on this unique project. We believe it provides a genuine legacy to the city, the West Midlands and the UK."We are as excited as Volleyball England to get the centre open and start engaging the athletes using our world class sports science support based at Alexander Stadium. We also want to give local people the chance to take part in completely new sport."I'd like to thank everyone for their hard work and dedication on the project so far and we look forward to the centre opening ready for the new academic year."Backed by BCU, Sport England, Volleyball England, and the FIVB Empowerment Fund, the venue will allow UK athletes to train year-round. University names building in honour of late poet Benjamin Zephaniah
A university has renamed one of its buildings in honour of the late poet and activist Benjamin from Handsworth in Birmingham, was a Brummie legend whose career spanned poetry, literature, music and acting. He died in December 2023, aged City University (BCU) has now renamed a four-storey building, formerly known as University House, as the Benjamin Zephaniah Vice Chancellor David Mba said Zephaniah had strived to "give a voice to the voiceless" and to show that education must be inclusive. Zephaniah, the son of a Barbadian postman and a Jamaican nurse, was dyslexic and unable to read or write when he left school aged he went on to have a career that included performing dub poetry, writing novels and children's books, and appearing in the BBC series Peaky awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2005. Zephaniah died eight weeks after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, sparking tributes across his home city that have so far included an open-air exhibition, a mural, and a commemorative blue also launched a poetry competition last year in his honour. The contest launched its second edition last week and is open for entries until 21 wife Qian, Birmingham poet laureate Ayan Aden, and Baroness Mary Bousted, former joint general secretary of the National Education Union, attended the BCU building's official opening last building, which is on the university's city centre campus, has science labs, a space for design and technology, an art room, and general teaching rooms. A decade of Serendipity Arts Festival

Wolverhampton-Bangalore Research and Innovation Centre inaugurated in Bengaluru
Dr. M.C. Sudhakar, Minister for Higher Education of Karnataka, inaugurated the Wolverhampton-Bangalore Research and Innovation Centre (WBRIC) at the newly-established academic wing of Bangalore City University (BCU) in Bengaluru on April 22. The centre is a collaborative initiative between BCU and the University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. Dr. Sudhakar highlighted its potential to open new academic and research avenues for students across Karnataka, emphasising the government's commitment to supporting higher education and research in public universities. Prof. Suresh Renukappa, Director of the Centre, stated that the centre would focus on climate resilience, healthcare, smart cities and villages, energy security, waste-to-wealth initiatives, pollution control, and the Brand Bengaluru initiative. In his keynote address, Prof. Prashant Pillai, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton, mentioned that the centre will facilitate scholar exchange programmes, joint PhD opportunities, seminars, and conferences to foster international academic collaboration. Prof. Ebrahim Adia, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton, underscored the importance of the historic academic ties between India and the UK.
