June 5-6: Samaritan Medical Center Golf Tournament

Samaritan Medical Center will be hosting its annual Thousand Islands Golf Classic at the Thousand Islands Country Club on Thursday, June 5 and Friday, June 6. The presenting sponsor for this year's event is International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 910 and the Northern New York National Electrical Contractors Association. Samaritan's February and March DAISY and BEE Award recipients Thursday night's proceedings will have dinner, a live auction and music at the Edgewood Resort in Alexandria Bay. Guests don't need to be golfers to attend the dinner. This year's online auction is open from now until June 5. For more information, sign up for the event and to view this year's auction items, visit Friday will see the golf tournament take place at the Thousand Islands Country Club on Wellesley Island. Both the old course and lake course will be used on that day for the tournament. WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Samaritan Medical Center has announced its February and March 2025 DAISY and BEE Award recipients. February 2025 OWL award recipients The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses® recognizes exemplary nursing staff and the BEE Award honors other outstanding staff members who support patient care at the hospital and all outpatient clinics. The Award Recipients are as follows: Allison Howard, a Registered Nurse (RN) in Samaritan's Emergency Department, received February's DAISY Award; Heather Berry, a Registered Nurse (RN) in Samaritan's Surgical Service,s received March's DAISY Award; Beth Hayes, Radiologic Technologist, Samaritan Medical Center, received February's BEE Award; and Veronica (Harley) Plaschka, Central Sterilization Technician in Samaritan's Surgical Service,s received March's BEE Award. A parent of a patient who expressed their gratitude for the compassion and advocacy of their loved one during their time at the hospital nominated Howard. Allison Howard, a Registered Nurse (RN) in Samaritan's Emergency Department (WWTI/Samaritan Medical Center) Hayes was nominated for the BEE Award by a colleague for being helpful and being a champion for care for all the patients she encounters. She was acknowledged for her willingness to learn and desire to improve her own career through education and training. Beth Hayes, Radiologic Technologist, Samaritan Medical Center (WWTI/Samaritan Medical Center) Berry was nominated by a colleague who highlighted the nurse's commitment to helping others and dedication to the profession. Heather Berry, a Registered Nurse (RN) in Samaritan's Surgical Services & Veronica (Harley) Plaschka, Central Sterilization Technician in Samaritan's Surgical Services (WWTI/Samaritan Medical Center) Plaschka was nominated for the BEE Award by a colleague who expressed the importance of a job well done by someone who works behind the scenes to ensure quality and patient safety through proper cleansing of surgical instruments. For receiving the DAISY Award, Howard & Berry were presented with certificates commending them as extraordinary nurses, DAISY Award pins and symbolic sculptures hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe called 'A Healer's Touch.' A larger version of this sculpture has also been placed in the Healing Gardens at Samaritan Medical Center in honor of all DAISY and BEE Award winners. It was purchased using funds donated by the Samaritan Auxiliary. Hayes & Plaschka were presented with certificates, BEE Award pins and gift bags with other tokens of gratitude. Both awards will continue to be presented throughout the year, and patients, families or colleagues can submit nominations at any time. ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. (WWTI) – The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce welcomed restaurant and food enthusiast Anothony Tringale of 'Eat Local New York' for two private culinary tours that highlighted some of the county's independent restaurants. The trips, organized as part of the Chamber's ongoing destination development initiatives, aimed to raise awareness of the region's dining alternatives. These activities aim to attract more consumers to local eateries, thereby supporting a thriving food scene in the County's rural towns. Yum Brands CEO announces plans to retire in 2026 The Chamber's tourism team financed and created the itineraries, which Tringale around the county's locally owned restaurants. 'Bringing Anthony here was an ideal way for us to promote our local restaurant scene in an authentic way,' said Tiffani Amo, Director of Tourism for the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. 'The food itineraries we've published online are important marketing tools for our more traditional tourism promotion efforts, but this type of social media exposure and engagement is something that resonates with both visitors and residents in a completely different way. It's also a unique and exciting form of promotion for local business owners, which is important because we want them to be engaged and invested in how they're represented through a tourism lens.' The Cheesecake Factory's original menu was 1 page, and it was missing this popular staple Tringale's first visit took place on November 1, 2024, with stops at: Foster the Plant in Potsdam; Barking Dog Saloon in Potsdam; Hoof and Horn Butcher and Einery in Potsdam; Jake's On the Winer in Hannawa Falls; Sabad's in Norfolk; and Blue House in Madrid. Returning on March 28, 2025, he explored another set of restaurants, including: Wimpy's Inn in Ogdensburg; The Place in Ogdensburg; Gristmill Brewery in Massena; and 1844 House in Potsdam. WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Jefferson Community College's featured Honors Program student for the month of April is Raven Streebel from Fort Drum. Streebel is a paralegal major at JCC. They examined how the comics Watchmen and Umbrella Academy modify real-life events, such as the Vietnam War, either by changing the results or by utilizing them to further the plot as one of their Honors Program alternatives. Cady Weaver: JCC's featured Honors Program student for March 2025 The Jefferson Community College Honors Program offers students with exceptional academic skills the opportunity to receive enriched instruction. Honors students select three courses within their curriculum and enhance them as Honors Options, which are based on a project agreed on by the student and a faculty member working closely with the student. Students also take the Honors Seminar, an interdisciplinary course open only to program participants that examines a single theme every semester, featuring guest speakers from various disciplines and can include field experience. Successful program students earn an Honors Graduate designation on their academic transcript for each Honors Option course. Students who demonstrate excellent academic achievement in high school or who have completed 12 credit hours of college coursework can apply for admission to the Honors Program. Samaritan's December 2024 DAISY and BEE Award recipients The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses® recognizes exemplary nursing staff, and the BEE Award honors other outstanding staff members who support patient care at the hospital and all outpatient clinics. The Award Recipients are as follows: Briana Gryglik, a Registered Nurse (RN) in Samaritan's Emergency Department, received the DAISY Award; and Janeen Lee, clinic office support at the Adams Family Health Center, received the BEE Award. Gryglik's nomination stemmed from a patient encounter while she was a Graduate Nurse (GN) in Samaritan's Progressive Care Unit (PCU). The person who nominated Gryglik expressed thanks for her attentiveness and compassionate care. Lee was nominated for the BEE Award by Donna Edwards, Operations Manager for the Adams Family Health Center: 'She is extremely patient-centered and puts so much effort into ensuring that a high standard of care is given to each and every one of our patients.' For receiving the DAISY Award, Gryglik was presented with certificates commending them as extraordinary nurses, DAISY Award pins, and symbolic sculptures hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe called 'A Healer's Touch.'
