Israel Cries "Wrong Signal To Hamas" As Western Allies Call To End Gaza War, Slam "Drip Feeding Aid"

Israel's key Western allies have said the war in Gaza "must end now", citing 'new depths' of civilian suffering in the besieged Palestinian enclave. The call was made in a joint statement released by the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Japan and Italy among others, plus the EU. 'We urge the parties and the international community to unite in a common effort to bring this terrible conflict to an end, through an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire', they said in a joint statement. 'The Israeli government's aid delivery model is dangerous, fuels instability and deprives Gazans of human dignity,' the countries' foreign ministers said in a joint a number of Israel's European allies including Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia did not sign the statement. n18oc_world n18oc_crux0:00 INTRODUCTION2:14 GAZA WAR A 'DISGRACE TO ALL OF HUMANITY'3:28 BELGIUM QUESTIONS ISRAELI SOLDIERS OVER 'WAR CRIMES'

Belgian ex-Olympic gymnastics champion Derwael retires

BELGIUM's former Olympic uneven bars champion Nina Derwael said Tuesday she was retiring from gymnastics at the age of 25, having 'achieved her goals' in the sport. Derwael became the first Belgian women's gymnast to win an Olympic medal four years ago in Tokyo, taking gold after twice being crowned world champion in the uneven bars. 'If I still wanted to play a significant role at world championships or Olympics, I would have to put my body under even greater and more prolonged pressure, a risk I no longer want to take,' she said in a statement from her agency. Derwael is a three-time European champion in the uneven bars and also won gold on the balance beam in Leipzig this year. She finished fourth at the Paris Olympics in her favourite event after recovering from a serious shoulder injury.

Belgium battle past Wales, Italy win in World Cup qualifying

BELGIUM held off a battling Wales and Italy gave sacked coach Luciano Spalletti a winning send-off in World Cup qualifying on Monday. Elsewhere Manchester City star Erling Haaland's goal lifted Norway past Estonia, Luka Modric was among the scorers in Croatia's 5-1 rout of the Czech Republic, and the Faroes Islands left it late to down Gibraltar 2-1. Giacomo Raspadori and Andrea Cambiaso scored in each half as Italy beat Moldova 2-0 to inject a smidgeon of pride back in the Azzurri camp after last week's 3-0 thrashing by Norway which cost Spalletti his job. The Italians trail Norway by nine points in European qualifying group I by nine points and are at risk of missing out on a third straight World Cup. Even though they have played two games less their ticket to the United States, Canada and Mexico next year is far from certain. Only top spot in each group guarantees automatic qualification with Italy's best hopes appearing to rest on finishing second and reaching the play-offs. 'When you're the national team coach you have no excuses, it's you who selects the squad,' said Spalletti to public broadcaster Rai. 'It's the coach who has to make the difference and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that.' Over in Brussels Belgium raced to a three-goal lead over Wales courtesy of Romelu Lukaku, Youri Tielemans and Jeremy Doku inside half an hour. Wales, though, rallied through a Harry Wilson penalty, Sorba Thomas and Brennan Johnson to stun the side ranked eighth in the world. But De Bruyne rode to his nation's rescue, as he has so often in a stellar career, by steering in Tielemans' perfect cross in the 88th minute. It left Wales sitting second in Group J, one point behind North Macedonia, 1-0 winners over Kazakhstan, and three in front of Belgium, who have two games in hand. This was Wales manager Craig Bellamy's first defeat in his first 10 matches in charge. Wales captain Ben Davies told the BBC: 'Getting back as close as we did is probably why it's as painful as it is. 'We knew we could do a lot better. You could see in the second half, we managed to nick a goal before half-time and it gave us something to hang on to and we pushed them close. 'We have plenty more games we just have to focus on ourselves and hopefully results go our way.' On Tuesday the Netherlands host Malta in Groningen hoping to make it two wins from two and close the gap on Poland, who have a stiff test in Finland, in Group G.

Courtois out of Belgian squad for World Cup qualifiers

Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has withdrawn from the squad for their opening two World Cup qualifiers this month because of a back injury. The player's club Real Madrid said on Sunday that he had been diagnosed with sacroiliitis – inflammation of one or both sacroiliac joints in the area where the lower back and pelvis meet. 'The medical staff of Real Madrid and the Royal Belgian Football Association have discussed Thibaut Courtois' back problems intensively in the past period,' the Belgian association added in a statement. 'Both medical staffs have come to the conclusion that the goalkeeper is not fit for the upcoming internationals.' The injury may also jeopardise Courtois' chances of playing at the Club World Cup in the United States, where Real Madrid open their campaign in Miami on June 18 against Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia. Uncapped Nordin Jackers from Club Brugge will replace Courtois in the Belgian squad for the matches against North Macedonia in Skopje on Friday and at home to Wales next Monday. Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels is expected to take Courtois' place in goal for the two Group J fixtures.
