HID & ASSA ABLOY win Red Dot for BG100 biometric airport gate
HID and ASSA ABLOY have received a Red Dot Award: Product Design 2025 for their BG100 Speedgate self-boarding biometric eGate in the interior design elements category.
The BG100 Speedgate combines HID's Facepod facial recognition technology and document reader with ASSA ABLOY's Speedgate, aiming to deliver a streamlined passenger experience in airports by integrating multiple identity verification features into a single automated access point.
This collaborative product is designed to enhance the security and efficiency of passenger processing by supporting faster, secure and contactless transactions across various airport touchpoints. According to HID, the BG100 Speedgate enables use from pre-security checks and VIP lounge access to boarding and immigration, condensing these interactions into a unified interface for both travellers and airport staff.
At the technical core of the Speedgate is the HID Facepod solution, which incorporates an advanced camera system, facial recognition algorithms, multi-touch screens and smart LED guidance. This combination of features is intended to improve usability and passenger flow, meeting the requirements of airports that handle significant volumes of travellers each day.
The Red Dot Award jury, known for its focus on product design since 1955, recognised the BG100 Speedgate for its design quality and for meeting criteria such as function, seduction, use and responsibility. Entries for this edition of the awards were submitted from over 60 countries and evaluated by a panel of experts from 21 countries, including designers, professors, journalists and consultants.
Vito Fabbrizio, Vice President Product Management and Innovation, Biometric Identity Technologies at HID, said: "We're proud to be recognised with a Red Dot Award for a solution that reflects HID's dedication to serving the aviation and travel industry. This award underscores our leadership in biometrics and facial recognition technologies and highlights our commitment to delivering secure, intuitive and best-in-class identity verification experiences for travelers around the world."
The Speedgate's physical design allows for flexibility across different airport spaces, with an ultra-modular construction that can be adapted in a variety of colours and sizes. The manufacturers highlight that it has been developed for high-traffic airport environments and features countermeasures such as anti-tailgating, anti-piggybacking and wrong-way passage detection, supporting both operational and regulatory security requirements.
The BG100 Speedgate is produced with the ethos of "Moving by Design," which refers to integrating motion, emotion and technology to create a balance between security and passenger convenience in busy public settings.
Robert Zimmerman, Head of Business Vertical Airports at ASSA ABLOY, commented on the award: "It's incredibly exciting to see our joint innovation recognised on a global stage. This award is a testament to the power of collaboration and our shared commitment to shaping the future of travel. Together, we're delivering cutting edge solutions that enhance security, elevate the passenger experience and make travel safer and more intuitive."
The Red Dot Award: Product Design is regarded as a significant distinction in the international product design landscape. Products considered for this award are required to demonstrate excellence in both aesthetic appeal and usability, as assessed by a diverse panel conducting detailed evaluation and discussion of submitted entries.
The BG100 Speedgate is positioned by HID and ASSA ABLOY to address the evolving demand for security and process efficiency within airports and the broader air travel sector, as requirements for contactless and secure identity verification continue to expand.
