Bengaluru Airport bags IndiGo's Rs 1,100 cr MRO facility, to be built on 31 acres

The airline signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), under which BIAL will allocate approximately 31 acres for the facility will be built with an investment of over Rs 1,100 crore, inclusive of infrastructure, plant and machinery, the Karnataka government said in a statement. With this project BIAL will support a projected 1,300 aircrafts by FY31 and potentially scale it to 2,100 aircrafts by FY 37-38, it added. The new MRO facility at KIA will be an addition to its current infrastructure already serving Airbus, Boeing and defence aircrafts."Indigo's second MRO facility is expected to generate over 750 direct high-skill jobs in engineering, logistics, warehousing, and support services," Karnataka's Commissioner for Industrial Development Gunjan Krishna said the new facility will be equipped to handle both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, boosting the airline's operational presence in southern planned facility will consist of four hangars to accommodate four wide-body aircraft or eight narrow-body aircraft, and one paint hangar to accommodate one wide-body aircraft.'With Indigo and Air India both now operating MRO facilities in Karnataka, alongside TASL's upcoming MRO plant and HAL 's existing MRO operations in the state, Karnataka truly earns its title as the MRO Capital of Asia ,' the Industries department said in a per government sources the Kalaburagi airport was also offered to IndiGo but the airline chose Bengaluru as its base.'The presence of IndiGo's MRO will also accelerate the entry of OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, resulting in a multiplier effect in terms of jobs, industrial growth, and vendor development,' Commissioner Krishna added. Domestic carrier IndiGo on Friday said it has inked an initial pact with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) to set up a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at the Bangalore International Airport. Under the agreement, BIAL will allocate about 31 acres to IndiGo for development of MRO infrastructure to support the airline's expanding fleet, it said in a statement. The facility will be equipped to handle both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, further strengthening IndiGo's maintenance capabilities and operational presence at the Bengaluru Airport. "Developing broad IndiGo MRO capabilities marks a significant and very strategic step for IndiGo. Partnering with BIAL underlines our shared commitment to drive long-term growth of the aviation ecosystem in Bengaluru", IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers said. Further, the development of the MRO facility will help strengthen the aerospace and defence ecosystem in Karnataka, it added. IndiGo already has one MRO facility each in Delhi and Bengaluru.

IndiGo anticipates that the airline will surpass 600 aircraft in its fleet by 2030. It has joined hands 'with Norse Atlantic Airways for the dry lease of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, deliveries of which will be completed by early 2026, anticipating the arrival of the A350 in 2027.'IndiGo has earlier announced the commencement of long-haul operations with non-stop, direct flights connecting Mumbai with Manchester and Amsterdam starting July 2025. Furthermore, the release also said that, 'as IndiGo's fleet of damp-leased B787S expands later this year, the airline is planning to expand its long-haul network to London and Copenhagen.'There are plans by the airline to add four new domestic destinations to its network, which will increase connectivity from 91 to 95 destinations. IndiGo is all set to become the first airline to start operations at the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Noida International Airport in a press briefing, the CEO of Indigo highlighted that Indigo's loyalty program has already signed up 3 million members in just six months.'The financial year 2025 has been a pivotal year in our journey as we took significant steps in our evolution into a truly global airline. This includes the introduction of IndiGoStretch, our tailor-made business offering, and BlueChip, our loyalty program, besides sizeable network expansion in the domestic as well as international market,' Pieter Elbers said.
