Bengal migrant workers: Complaint against CM Mamata for social media post on harassment refuted by Delhi Police
Kolkata: BJP Lok Sabha member from Kanthi constituency in East Midnapore, Soumendu Adkhikari, on Tuesday, complained to Delhi Police against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of allegedly disseminating fake and provocative content on her social media handle on the issue of alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal in BJP-ruled states. Soumendu Adhikari is the younger brother of Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari. His complaint was about a video shared by the Chief Minister on the wall of her official X handle on Sunday, where she accused the Delhi Police of harassing and torturing a Bengali-speaking migrant family there. The Chief Minister shared the video and claimed that a child and his mother, who belong to a migrant family from West Bengal's Malda district, were allegedly beaten up by the police in New Delhi. In a written complaint with the Cyber Crime Branch of Delhi Police, a copy of which is available with IANS, Soumednu Adhikari asked the police to register an FIR against the Chief Minister under relevant Sections of the IT Act and take appropriate legal actions against her in accordance with law. "I am writing this letter to lodge a formal complaint against Smt. Mamata Banerjee, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, for the deliberate dissemination of false, fabricated, and communally charged content via her official social media handle, with the intent to malign the image of the Delhi Police, provoke public discontent, and stoke inter-community disharmony," read the letter. Adhikari said that the incident not only undermined the rule of law but also damaged the inter-state and inter-community harmony, and the faith of citizens in law enforcement. On Monday, the Delhi Police called the video "fabricated" and "politically motivated." Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania said that after a thorough investigation and enquiry, the Delhi Police have concluded that the entire video was baseless and fabricated. 'This video has been deliberately circulated on social media to tarnish the image of the Delhi Police. Further investigation is still going on," Dhania said on Monday. Soon after the rebuttal from Delhi Police, BJP's Information Technology Cell Chief and the party's central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, slammed Mamata Banerjee and accused her of spreading fake news.

Nehru might be your grandfather, but he was first PM; I have right to question: Nishikant Dubey slams Gandhis
New Delhi: BJP Lok Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, stating that they act as though they hold exclusive rights over former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Speaking during the Operation Sindoor debate in the Lok Sabha, Dubey asserted that as India's first Prime Minister, Nehru's decisions are open to public scrutiny. "I would like to thank the Indian armed forces for giving a fitting reply to Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. I offer my homage to those unarmed people who were killed in the name of religion," Dubey said while opening his address. Criticising Priyanka Gandhi's remarks urging people to forget the past, Dubey said, "The person, society or the community that forgets its past, only gets destroyed. We should learn from the past and live in the present. The two things that are being talked about in Parliament are Kashmir and China." He alleged that Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi behave as though they have a "stamp" of Jawaharlal Nehru. "Nehru might be your grandfather, but he was the first Prime Minister of India, and I have the right to question his deeds. You do not have a guarantee or USP for him. I have the right to raise questions about the punishment I am enduring," he added. Dubey cited Nehru's book, 'Glimpses of World History', in which Mahmud Ghazni was referred to as a "warrior" and claimed that such thinking reflects a mindset that the Congress party continues to carry. Touching on the Partition, Dubey blamed Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Liaquat Ali, but added that dynasty politics in the Congress had caused lasting harm. He claimed that when Nehru appointed his sister Vijay Laxmi Pandit as ambassador to Moscow, it deeply upset Liaquat Ali, prompting him to move to Pakistan after Partition. "The same dynasty politics has brought the Congress party and the country to this stage," he said. Dubey also elaborated on Kashmir's accession to India. "In 1942, when India launched the 'Bharat Chhodo Andolan', in Kashmir, Sheikh Abdullah was running the 'Raja Chhodo Andolan'. Jinnah supported the King instead of Sheikh Abdullah, and the King thought Nehru did not support him. So, he took a few months to decide whether to join India," he said. He questioned the special status granted to Kashmir under Article 370. "The King signed the same Instrument of Accession as the other 600 princely states. When the same was implemented in Manipur, Kutch, and Uttar Pradesh, then why was Article 370 implemented in Kashmir?" Dubey said. "If the Nehru-Gandhi family is responsible for the situation in Kashmir today, then we will hold them responsible. Why do Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have a problem with this?" he said. Dubey also raised a controversial claim regarding a CIA report, stating that at least 40 per cent of Congress MPs were "funded" by the Soviet Union and acted as "agents" of Russia. He further blamed Nehru for the Chinese occupation of Tibet, which he said had led to China's growing aggression along India's borders. Referring to Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Dubey claimed that the 1971 war hero was denied his pension from 1972 until 2007. "When Abdul Kalam became the President and intervened, he finally got the pension for Gen Mankeshaw in 2008," Dubey said. "You don't respect the Army Chief, the 1971 war hero, and then claim you respect the armed forces," he added.

BJP MP, Himachal Governor's ‘Udta Punjab' Remarks On Drugs Spark Row, AAP Reacts
Last Updated: A political clash erupted between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh after BJP MP Kangana Ranaut claimed drug addiction in Himachal is due to smuggling from Pakistan via Punjab. A fresh political slugfest broke out between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh after BJP Lok Sabha MP Kangana Ranaut on Friday claimed that drug addiction among Himachal Pradesh youth is rising because of smuggling from Pakistan through Punjab. She echoed similar sentiments of Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla who yesterday warned that if immediate action is not taken to eradicate drug menace, Himachal Pradesh would become ' Udta Punjab" in the next five years. These remarks have drawn a strong rebuttal from Punjab's ruling Aam Aadmi Party. What Kangana Ranaut Said? The actor-turned-politician linked the rising drug abuse in her home state to narcotics trafficking from Pakistan via Punjab, saying that it is impacting Himachal's youth and families. 'The state of drug abuse across Himachal Pradesh is dire.I agree with the Governor's 'Udta Punjab' remark as teens and children in the state are gullible and get easily involved in drugs coming from Pakistan via Punjab," she said while speaking outside Parliament as quoted by news agency PTI. Ranaut further claimed that many young Himachalis were falling victim to addiction and turning to crime. 'Our children are gullible, naïve and simple," she claimed. What Himachal Pradesh Governor Said? A day earlier on Thursday, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla echoed similar sentiments and warned that the hill state could soon become "Udta Punjab" if no immediate action is taken to eradicate the drug menace. While addressing mediapersons in Shimla, he said that the NDPS cases rose by 340 per cent from around 500 in 2012 to about 2200 in 2023, and expressed concern over the "rising" menace of substance abuse in the state. The governor emphasised the urgent need for the state government to establish a new state-of-the-art de-addiction and rehabilitation centre. There is only one rehab run by the Red Cross in Kullu and we have been hearing that land is being identified for setting up a rehabilitation centre in the Sirmaur district, but nothing is moving on ground," he said as quoted by PTI. AAP Minister's Rebuttal Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema responded to the remarks and accused the BJP MP of irresponsibility. 'The nation knows Kangana very well. She comes from the film industry, doesn't know much, and tries to pull the same stunts here. She just wants attention. The BJP should either restrain her or remove her from the party," he said as quoted by PTI. ‘Highly irresponsible': SC castigates Nishikant over remarks on judiciary
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has castigated BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey over his 'highly irresponsible' and 'absurd' comments on the top court and the Chief Justice of India (CJI). Amid ongoing hearings on the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, Nishikant Dubey, a Member of Parliament from Jharkhand's Godda, during an interview, had said that 'Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna is responsible for all the civil wars happening in India' and 'to provoke the religious war in this country, only and only the Supreme Court is responsible'. 'In our opinion, the comments were highly irresponsible and reflect a penchant to attract attention by casting aspersions on the Supreme Court of India and the Judges of the Supreme Court,' said a bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, in its order, uploaded on the website of the apex court on Thursday. Though the apex court refrained from entertaining a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking contempt of court action against Dubey, it said that courts need not protect their verdicts and decisions by taking recourse to the power of contempt. However, the CJI Khanna-led Bench stressed that any attempt to spread communal hatred or indulge in hate speech must be dealt with an iron hand. 'Hate speech cannot be tolerated as it leads to loss of dignity and self-worth of the targeted group members, contributes to disharmony amongst groups, and erodes tolerance and open-mindedness, which is a must for a multi-cultural society committed to the idea of equality,' it said, adding that any attempt to cause alienation or humiliation of the targeted group is a criminal offence and must be dealt with accordingly. In its order, the top court, after examining Dubey's statement, said that the contents of his assertions tend to scandalise and lower the authority of the Supreme Court, if not interfere or tend to interfere with the judicial proceedings pending before the court, and have the tendency to interfere and obstruct the administration of justice. Observing that there is no 'civil war' in India, the apex court said that judicial decisions are made in accordance with legal principles and not in keeping with political, religious or community considerations. 'Surely, courts and judges have shoulders broad enough and an implicit trust that the people would perceive and recognise when criticism or critique is biased, scandalous and ill-intentioned,' the CJI Khanna-led Bench added.

SC to hear PIL against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over ‘contemptuous' remarks on judiciary tomorrow
New Delhi: The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Monday a public interest litigation(PIL) filed over the "contemptuous act" committed by BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey in "scandalising" the top court and the Chief Justice of India (CJI). As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, a bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar will take up the matter for hearing on May 5. The petition said that Dubey, a Member of Parliament from Jharkhand's Godda, made a "very provocative, hateful and scandalising" statement against CJI Khanna and the highest judicial institution of the country. During an interview, Dubey had said that "Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna is responsible for all the civil wars happening in India" and 'to provoke the religious war in this country only and only the Supreme Court is responsible". "The entire contents of the interview are full of derogatory speech towards the judiciary and the Supreme Court. Such acts amount to an offence punishable under BNS and also under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971," stated the plea filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari. The PIL stressed the importance of protecting the dignity of the Supreme Court and its judges, and prayed the top court to invoke the powers provided under Article 129 of the Constitution of India (the power to punish for contempt of itself). Earlier, the top court had granted permission to advocate Tiwari to file a fresh petition after he sought permission to amend the plea in view of the "serious speech made against the Chief Justice of India". "You file a fresh petition," said a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N.K. Singh as it emphasised that the averments made in the petition should not infringe the "dignity and decorum of the institution". The previous PIL had sought the formation of a five-member judicial enquiry commission under the chairmanship of a retired apex court judge to enquire into the violent protests that erupted against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, in West Bengal's Murshidabad.
