Premier: Sarawak, Indonesia to jointly develop Kayan River hydropower projects

Abang Johari speaks during the BKK launching ceremony in Kuala Lumpur today. – Sarawak Public Communications photo KUCHING (July 30): Sarawak, through its utility company Sarawak Energy Berhad, has entered into an agreement with PT Adaro Energy Indonesia to jointly develop hydropower projects along the Kayan River in Indonesia's North Kalimantan province, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said the collaboration was formalised during his official working visit to Jakarta on Tuesday, where he accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation. Highlighting the significance of the cross-border cooperation, Abang Johari stressed the need for Sarawakian engineers to work closely with their Indonesian counterparts. 'Sarawak needs more engineers there to collaborate with engineers from Indonesia. This means we will be working beyond Sarawak's borders,' he said during the launch of the Special Financial Aid (BKK) for Sarawakian tertiary students in Kuala Lumpur today. He also revealed that Japanese firm Sumitomo has expressed strong interest in participating in Sarawak's hydrogen energy industry. According to him, this reflects Sarawak's growing prominence in strategic green energy sectors. He called on Sarawakian youths to prepare for global opportunities in the emerging green economy, particularly in areas such as renewable energy and hydrogen. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the launch announced that each eligible student will receive RM1,200, disbursed in two phases of RM600 per semester via the S Pay Global platform. Open to all Sarawakian students regardless of household income, the BKK aims to ease the financial burden on families and help students focus on their academic journey. The aid is expected to benefit around 42,000 Sarawakian students currently enrolled in institutions of higher learning nationwide. 'The Sarawak government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has delivered on its promise. This shows that we care, not only about the students as Sarawakians, but because we are a government that is genuinely concerned about the future of our state,' said Abang Johari. Also at the ceremony here were Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof; Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Sarawak Attorney-General Dato Sri Saferi Ali; and other dignitaries. The Premier described the BKK as part of a larger strategy to empower youth through education and enhance Sarawak's global economic competitiveness. 'This assistance is provided regardless of students' backgrounds. We want to cultivate a generation that is knowledgeable, competitive and ready to seize opportunities not just within Sarawak, but internationally,' he said. Abang Johari also stressed the importance of preparing Sarawak's youth to become globally competent professionals in an increasingly borderless economic landscape. 'This is a strategic form of assistance. We have bright Sarawakian students who are intellectually capable and can pursue studies that are relevant to current global economic developments,' he said. He further noted that application numbers are expected to increase and reaffirmed the state's commitment to introducing more student-focused initiatives in the future. Introduced as part of Abang Johari's winding-up speech during the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting in November last year, the assistance was initially targeted at students from households with a per capita income of RM1,500 or below. However, the eligibility has since been broadened to include all full-time diploma and bachelor's degree students with Sarawakian status, regardless of socioeconomic background. Meanwhile, Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, in his speech said the aid is designed not only to ease students' financial pressures but also to motivate them to excel in their studies. A second application phase will open in September, catering to newly enrolled students and those who missed the initial round. Abang Johari BKK financial aid tertiary education

BKK: Dr Annuar dismisses claims of false promise, says over 21,000 applications stringently verified

(From second left) Dr Annuar and TCS executive director Dr Amin Aznizan symbolically hand over the aid to a TCS student representative. KUCHING (July 18): More than half of the 42,000 applications for the RM1,200 Special Financial Assistance (BKK) for Sarawak students have been verified, with the remainder expected to be processed by the end of this month. Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the verification process is ongoing and requires extra care as the scheme involves public funds. 'We have to be meticulous about it. We cannot afford to give it to someone who is not eligible and we also don't want to miss someone who is,' he told reporters after handing over education aid to underprivileged students at Technology College Sarawak (TCS) here. Dr Annuar said this in response to accusations that BKK was a false promise. 'That (42,000 applicants) is a whole lot and it (the system) is jammed up. The accusation that the BKK is a lie and an empty promise is not true,' he explained. He pointed out the verification is based on letters from universities, which has slowed down the process. 'Initially, we thought it could be done quickly, but this is the first time we are implementing this scheme. 'After this, only new intakes will require verification,' he said. Dr Annuar pledged that payment to eligible students will not be an issue as alternative transfer methods are available for those without S Pay Global accounts. BKK was scheduled to be officially launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on June 28, with approved applicants to receive their first disbursement immediately after. Dr Annuar also shared plans for the Siswa Balik Sekolah programme, which encourages students to give back to society during semester breaks by assisting primary school pupils and promoting interest in mathematics and science. Discussions are being held with the Education Department and Sarawak- universities including Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, i-CATS University College, University Technology Sarawak (UTS), and Curtin University Malaysia, to integrate the initiative with General Studies (MPU) under community engagement requirements. During today's event, 118 TCS underprivileged students each received RM1,000 in education aid from Yayasan Taqwa-Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP) to help cover costs such as transportation, meals, and learning materials. As a charitable arm of MAIWP, Yayasan Taqwa is dedicated to distributing zakat and implementing education welfare programmes. The collaboration with TCS marks a strategic effort to support affordable higher education, particularly in Sarawak where accessibility remains a challenge for many. BKK Dr Annuar Rapaee lead

City Hall dress code supports gender identity

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced that city employees can now dress in accordance with their gender identity. Recognising gender diversity is crucial in today's evolving world, Bangkok deputy governor Tavida Kamolvej said. 'While social acceptance may have lagged in the past, the current global landscape demands a greater understanding of people's differences, which in turn will lead to broader acceptance of other forms of diversity,' she said. Personal preferences in dressing would still be secondary to officials' duties, as the freedom to dress in accordance with staff identity must come with a responsibility to perform duties with integrity and honesty, she added. The policy also strictly prohibits sexual harassment and any form of bullying, regardless of position, gender identity or sexual orientation. Beyond the dress code, the BMA is adopting other measures to further support the LGBTQIA+ community, she said. For example, medical services for gender-diverse individuals will be offered at 31 BKK Pride Clinics in 11 BMA hospitals and 20 public health centres. This will to provide them with safe zones and promote equitable access to healthcare, said Ms Tavida. Other measures include directing BMA schools to promote equality and diversity, opening public spaces for diversity-themed activities, and developing the annual Pride Month festival in June into a world-class event.

Veidekke lands $130.6m contract to build three new substations in Norway

Norwegian state-owned enterprise Statnett has awarded a design and build contract to Scandinavian contractor Veidekke for the construction of three new substations in Vestland. The contract is valued at nearly Nkr1.3bn ($130.6m), excluding value-added tax (VAT). Veidekke is responsible for the foundation, construction, and concrete work for the substations in the municipalities of Øygarden, Vik, and Modalen. The scope of work encompasses access roads, rock work, and transformer shafts, as well as the construction of multiple technical buildings and facilities both below and above ground. The initiative is a response to the demand for electrification and the country's commitment to the green shift. Statnett aims to modernise the grid infrastructure by replacing older power lines and substations between Sogndal and Sauda via Kollsnes. The new substations, designed for 420kV, will enhance the capacity and flow within the grid. Statnett is managing the procurement process for itself and its customers, energy distributor BKK and Eviny Fornybar, a renewable energy and technology company. The construction is scheduled to begin in October in Øygarden, followed by Vik and Modalen. The construction phase is expected to conclude in 2028, with a subsequent period for installation and trial operations, leading to the final handover in the autumn of 2030. Veidekke Bygg EVP Hans Olav Sørlie said: 'Building critical infrastructure is something we really appreciate doing, and here, we will use the expertise of our employees in Bergen, Sogn og Fjordane, Møre og Romsdal and Veidekke Prefab. We are grateful for the confidence shown in us and are looking forward to a close and good partnership with Statnett over the next years.' Last month, Veidekke received a Nkr400m contract for the new Kongshaugen treatment plant in Norway. Additionally, Veidekke and its subsidiary Veitech recently secured a contract for construction and installation work at one of the Swedish Fortifications Agency's facilities in eastern Sweden. "Veidekke lands $130.6m contract to build three new substations in Norway" was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
