FDA Says 'Do Not Eat or Serve' Certain Frozen Shrimp Sold at Walmart

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised the public "not to eat, sell, or serve" certain frozen shrimp from Indonesia that were sold at Walmart (WMT) because of potential contamination with radioactive material. The FDA said that the affected Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp products were processed by Indonesian firm PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, or BMS Foods, and sold at Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia. "At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered the U.S. commerce," the FDA said Tuesday, adding that the shrimp was "in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act," and that its investigation was ongoing. "If you recently purchased one of the impacted lots of Great Value raw frozen shrimp from Walmart, throw it away," the agency advised. "Do not eat or serve this product." "The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority," a Walmart spokesperson told Investopedia. "We have issued a sales restriction and removed this product from our impacted stores. We are working with the supplier to investigate." The retail giant added that customers in possession of the shrimp should discard it and visit any Walmart store for a full refund. Walmart shares were up about 1% in recent trading and have added 13% of their value this year. Don't eat these potentially radioactive shrimp, FDA warns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning people to avoid eating certain raw frozen shrimp sold in Walmart stores as the agency investigates possible contamination by Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted the FDA to the detection of Cesium-137 in a single shipment of imported frozen shrimp from the Indonesia-based company PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, which does business under the name BMS Foods. Officials have since detected the radioactive isotope at four ports across the nation: Los Angeles, Houston, Miami; and Savannah, Ga. The amount of Cesium-137 detected within the contaminated shipment would not pose an acute hazard to consumers. However, long-term consumption would pose an elevated risk of cancer. Bags of the frozen food product are sold under the brand name Great Value at Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia. All containers and products that tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 have been denied entry into the country, according to an FDA announcement on Tuesday. Federal officials are coordinating with Indonesian seafood regulatory authorities to investigate the root cause of the contamination. There have not been any reports of contaminated shrimp in the freezer section or within the U.S. food supply chain, authorities said. Cesium-137 can be found in soil, food and air, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. It is produced by nuclear fission for use in medical gauges and devices, but can also be a byproduct of nuclear reactors and weapons testing, the agency said. Though bags of frozen shrimp haven't tested positive for Cesium-137, officials say the product may have been prepared, packed or held in unsanitary conditions. Walmart has received shipments of the frozen food that were imported after the date of the first detection, but those specific shipments did not alert for contamination, officials said. Shoppers who purchased the following products should not consume eat or serve the frozen shrimp, but instead throw it away, authorities say: The FDA is currently recommending that Walmart completely recall the item. BMS Foods is also no longer allowed to import the products into the U.S. until the company addresses any potential issues.

'Throw it away,' says the FDA to shoppers who may have bought Walmart shrimp exposed to radioactive contamination

The Food and Drug Administration is warning shoppers not to eat, sell, or serve the Great Value raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart after Customs and Border Protection officials detected possible contamination from Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. "If you recently purchased one of the impacted lots of Great Value raw frozen shrimp from Walmart, throw it away," wrote FDA officials in a statement on Tuesday. The CBP initially flagged the presence of Cesium-137 after screening shipping containers at four domestic ports. The FDA said in a press release that radioactive testing on shrimp from the Indonesian distributor BMS Foods also came back positive. So far, none of the shrimp tested as radioactive is believed to have reached grocery store shelves, but a few containers from BMS Foods did reach grocers after the CBP's initial detection. The FDA is now recommending a recall of all BMS Foods shipments. The agency has also temporarily blocked imports from the company after finding that it has violated the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act by handling products under conditions that could expose them to radioactive contamination. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Cesium-137 is a byproduct of nuclear fission, which can cause burns, acute radiation sickness, and even death with significant exposure. Food recalls due to radioactive contamination are relatively rare. After the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan, the FDA restricted imports of certain seafood and produce from affected regions due to Cesium-137 exposure and did not fully lift the restrictions until 2021. Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
