How Austin Smotherman won BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament on Korn Ferry Tour

GREER − The champagne went everywhere but Austin Smotherman's mouth. The 31-year-old pro golfer had just won his second Korn Ferry Tour title after making a birdie on the par-4 18th hole on June 18 in the BMW Charity Pro-Am. He couldn't contain his excitement, nor could his team, which drenched him with bubbly dripping from his hat to his game-winning golf club. Advertisement "My voice is probably slowly on its way out right now," Smotherman said. "I let out a couple of screams on that last putt. That'll definitely be a moment I never forget." Three of his five bridies in the fourth round at Thornblade Club came on the final four holes. Smotherman shot 4-under 71 to finish at 25-under 260 and a three-shot victory over Sebastian Cappelen, Pierceson Coody, and Carl Yaun. He won his first Korn Ferry Tour title in 2021 at the Simmons Bank Open for the Snedeker Foundation in Nashville, paving his way to the PGA Tour for the first time. And although his first win was important, this one resonated a tad bit more. Advertisement "This one's pretty special," Smotherland said. "I've never really made a putt like that to win on the last hole. It's so cool, and I wish I could recreate that moment every week. You don't always expect long putts like that to go in. But, I couldn't have drawn it up any better." Smotherland has a newfound appreciation for Greenville. The California native said Greenville is the place he'd visit "whenever we want him to." MORE: Here are celebrities coming to the 2025 BMW Pro-Am golf tournament including Clint Dempsey "I did a lot of walking downtown, got to be by the water," he said. "Greenville's been a great host, and it's incredible to win a championship like this in such a vibrant city." BMW Charity Pro-Am raises over $16 million for S.C. charities

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — At the BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament, their mission is all about giving back to local charities. For 25 years, the BMW Charity Pro-Am has been in 'full swing,' bringing a fun tournament to the Upstate while raising money for charities across the state. 'Oh, they love it,' Jeff Morris, Executive Director of Folds of Honor for the Palmetto State also said. 'They are calling me as soon as we are finished,' Chrystal Assadzandi, Charity and Volunteer Coordinator for the BMW Charity Pro-Am, said. 'I get a lot of calls saying 'how can we participate? How can we be a part?'' In 2001, the tournament was created to showcase the beauty of the South Carolina Upstate, while bringing locals, celebrities, and professional golfers together. It's aimed to raise money and awareness for South Carolina charities. One of those charities that has been impacted is Folds of Honor. 'I have had many veterans come up to me and they are so grateful to have the opportunity to come watch a golf tournament, come into the hospitality suite, interact with other veterans,' Morris said. 'It is amazing when you hear them, and they just go in there and they swap stories.' Morris said since Folds of Honor's involvement with the BMW Charity Pro-Am began in 2018, their group has been awarded around $250,000. The charity offers educational scholarships to the children and spouses of military and first responders. Funding for Folds of Honor, along with the more than 50 charities involved in this year's tournament, is raised in many ways, including through donations, ticket sales, and volunteer programs. BMW leaders said hundreds of charities have been impacted through this tournament over the past 25 years, and the money raised for them has not slowed down. 'We have given back in the past 25 years over $16 million to charities right here in the Upstate,' Assadzandi said. The BMW Charity Pro-Am will run through Sunday, June 8. For the final two days of the tournament, it's being held at the Thornblade Club in Greenville. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Fans, celebrities excited for return of BMW Charity Pro-Am to Thornblade

GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – Celebrating 25 years, this year's BMW Charity Pro-Am brings together celebrities, professional golfers and the Upstate community for a good cause and a fun weekend. Thousands of people were out at the Thornblade Club in Greenville County having a great time Friday afternoon. Many said they look forward to this tournament weekend year after year. 'It's just a great tradition for the neighborhood,' said Dale Hunt, a Thornblade resident. 'The club gets behind it and everybody likes it. It's just fun. It's a great little celebration.' 'It's just an immaculate golf course, we love just being in the atmosphere of what this is and I love that it's literally in our backyard, so we don't have to travel very far,' said neighbor Steven DeLisle. One familiar face some may recognize out on the course is Furman University alumnus and former USA soccer player Clint Dempsey, who said he is always thrilled to come back to Greenville. 'I went to college at Furman University,' said Dempsey. 'It's where it gave me a chance to take my game to the next level for soccer and kind of become my own man, getting away from Texas and being on my own. So, anytime I can come here it always feels like a second home.' Dempsey said while he hasn't lost his competitive spirit, he and his partner are just out to have a good time and raise money for local charities. 'Anytime you can have a win-win situation where you're doing good, can be outside enjoying a different sport, and it challenges you to be a better person, ' he said. 'It kind of keeps that competitiveness going in your life once you've retired from another sport. It's always fun and like I said, to give back and help those in need, there's no better feeling than that' Tournament organizers said over the past 25 years, more than $16 million has been donated to local charities, including Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, PAL, Gibbs Center Center, Folds of Honor Palmetto State, Hispanic Alliance, Hope Center for Children, Neighborhood Cancer Connection, and Upstate Warrior Solution.
