No End in Sight? US BMW XM Sales Fall 24% in Q2 2025

You'd no doubt recognize the XM if you happened to see one (of the apparently few) on the street. A front-end design like no other, complete with attention-grabbing, glowing grilles, makes the SUV almost impossible to ignore. This was probably, at least partially, the point when BMW launched the Halo M product back at the end of 2022. But sales figures show that BMW may have totally missed the mark with the XM - a rare coincidence with what most brand enthusiasts have been saying since the SUV's inception. Things started off okay, if not amazing, for the XM. It launched in late Q1 2023, and in Q2 of the same year, 762 models made it into customer garages. That's not bad when you consider the BMW XM is a somewhat low-production model commanding a price deep in the six figures. Q1 2024 even saw growth for the model - likely as a result of the SUV coming to market in the US late in the quarter, but hey, we'll give credit where it's due. Moving 541 units, an increase of 32.3% over the previous year, the XM looked to hold its own. Unfortunately, the good news for XM sales ended there, a year and a half ago. XM sales fell 29.5% and 30.7% in Q2 and Q3 of 2024, respectively, and most recently, in Q2 2025, they continued to fall another 23.8%, with just 409 SUVs finding new homes. While obviously the Bavarian automaker isn't producing as many XMs as, say, the BMW 3 Series, it isn't totally due to low production that the model isn't moving. A quick search online reveals over 200 XM models sitting on dealer lots, including 2023 and 2024 models. It's unlikely to be reactionary since it's about the time in the XM's product lifecycle for an update, but BMW is making changes to the 2026 BMW XM. The newest model year drops the base model, leaving only the XM Label. The 2026 XM Label enjoys 738 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque - nearly 100 more horsepower than the standard car - and some special red badging details. For 2026, BMW will introduce new exterior paints and interior upholstery, wheels, and welcome light animation. That also means the price of entry rises to over $186,000, when previously, you could get a base model for around $160,000. Unless, of course, BMW does something wacky and debuts the 2026 XM Label at a lower MSRP than the 2025 model. Which, while unlikely, isn't impossible. Despite announcing and showcasing the model's changes for 2026, the automaker is mum on pricing, claiming it will be announced closer to the model's August start of production. If the brand really wants to move some metal, a lower MSRP would be a great way to do it. After all, it's hard to claim the XM is at all close to the aspirational model BMW M hoped it would be. Either way, the elimination of the base model will effectively doom the XM to a continued downward sales trend for the remainder of its potentially short life. The XM is a victim of marketing. I've had a decent chunk of time behind the wheel of the XM, and the saddest thing about seeing it fail is that it's actually a pretty competent car. If you pulled all the silly badging and re-positioned it as an X8, priced alongside the top-tier X7 M60i or something similar, it would likely be a pretty good seller. Yes, it's still ugly, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I was never the target audience. It will be interesting to see how BMW pivots from the XM to the next halo car and what lessons the brand might have learned along the way. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The Mercedes AMG GT XX Concept Has Active Aero Wheels and 1,341 HP

The latest car news, reviews, and features. After last week's tease, we're now seeing the 'sedan' variant of what will eventually be a pair of AMG performance cars based on the company's new electric architecture, officially (and efficiently) dubbed Mercedes is calling its first effort the AMG GT XX, and this four-door concept is a prelude to two forthcoming production models that should debut in the coming year. The second will be an SUV that will compete with the BMW XM, and we'll probably see early signs of it either late this year or early next. EV platforms are notoriously fluid given the rapidly evolving landscape, but incorporates a series of significant advancements across its entire ecosystem, from batteries featuring an all-new chemistry to a new, compact axial flux motor design—a convenient upside when you're trying to fit several of them. Imagine a disc brake assembly that makes a car go, rather than stop. And the kicker? Just one can produce hundreds of horsepower. Mercedes says that each of the AMG GT XX's three motors is less than 3.5 inches wide. Yep, three motors, and from them, 1,341 horses. They're split into two separate drive units (one front, one rear), with two of those three residing in the rear drive unit, not only biasing its power output rearward, but allowing for each motor to function as half of a near-infinitely variable torque-vectoring system on the rear 'axle' along with dynamic distribution between the front and rear drive units, both of which have dedicated cooling circuits to help sustain continuous torque output. Mercedes says it'll hit a top speed of 223 mph—spicy, for a four-door EV. The Taycan Turbo tops out at 190, while the Model S Plaid hovers at 200. Powering all of this is a new NCMA (nickel//cobalt/manganese/aluminum) battery chemistry. The 3,000-cell battery pack is directly cooled and optimized for power density, charging speed, and longevity, says Mercedes-Benz. The GT One XX is also capable of 850kW (1,000+amp) fast-charging, which can add 400 km (or 248-ish miles) of range in just five minutes. This is based on WLTP calculations and requires a charger capable of delivering that much juice, so take it with a grain of salt. Still. Impressive. And those wheels? They incorporate active aero. The vanes reposition themselves based on the car's drive mode. When aiming for efficiency, they close off to reduce drag. For performance, they adjust to allow better air flow to the brakes. Individual generators powered by the wheels provide the electricity to run the tiny actuators mounted in their hubs. And as Mercedes teased last week, the GT XX will make noises. How exactly that will be implemented, the company didn't say. The initial announcement made no mention of a dedicated 'exhaust' sound system, but did note that the GT XX has external speakers embedded in its headlight housings capable of emitting 'driving sounds.' Yep, that's the wrong end, but it would explain why Benz's teaser clip featured the front of the car, rather than the rear. Mercedes says these can also be used for other required exterior sounds, such as pedestrian warning signals. Inside, the GT XX features several newly developed and more sustainable materials, including synthetic 'leather' made from recycled rubber, vegetable proteins, and biopolymers, and 100% biodegradable 'silk' threading produced by genetically modified bacteria. Sadly, Mercedes doesn't yet have any numbers to offer for a few key metrics, including both its overall range estimate and virtually all of its performance figures, including 0-60. But with three motors and over 1,300 horsepower, it's pretty safe to expect it'll be stupid quick off the line—and just about everywhere else, including the charging station. Got a tip? BMW plans hydrogen SUV for 2028 amid shifting EV market and regulatory changes

BMW's hydrogen program, headed by Dr Jurgen Guldner, has continued its progress towards a production-ready model using the iX5 hydrogen prototype that unveiled itself in 2024 Check Offers Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) once held the promise of being the future of automotive mobility, but the worldwide situation is changing. Regulatory rollbacks, slowing consumer adoption, and renewed investment in internal combustion and hybrid technologies are forcing manufacturers to expand their strategies. And while most manufacturers are experiencing this stunning transition, many manufacturers are still designing BEVs as their primary offer, including BMW. But BMW is prioritizing hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles (FCEVs) and positioning that technology as a longer-term complement to its battery-electric portfolio. Hydrogen as an alternative BMW is rekindling interest in hydrogen at a time when confidence in pure electric vehicle proliferation has ebbed smaller and considerable inability, at least in the key markets for BEVs. While BMW now has a strong portfolio of EVs, the position of hydrogen fuel cells as a viable alternative is in light of some of the problems plaguing electric vehicles such as the lengthy charging times and considerably lagging infrastructure in certain areas. Also Read : New-generation BMW iX3 previewed ahead of debut, promises 800 km range BMW's hydrogen program, headed by Dr Jurgen Guldner, has continued its progress towards a production-ready model using the iX5 hydrogen prototype that unveiled itself in 2024. BMW has stated it plans to finally produce a hydrogen-powered production SUV in 2028 that will probably be built on the next generation X5 platform. This would mark BMW's first entrance into mass-producing a hydrogen passenger vehicle after ongoing prototype iterations for the better part of a decade. The case for hydrogen In a recent interview with Driving Hydrogen, Dr. Guldner emphasized that hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles combine the benefits of electric drivetrains—such as instant torque and zero tailpipe emissions—with the fast refuelling times of gasoline cars. This hybrid appeal could address some of the limitations currently hindering widespread EV adoption, particularly in regions with limited charging infrastructure. BMW is not pursuing this direction in isolation. It continues to collaborate closely with Toyota, using Toyota's fuel-cell technology in the iX5 and extending that partnership for the 2028 model. According to Guldner, this collaboration aims to achieve scalability and efficiency in hydrogen vehicle development. Also Read : 2026 BMW XM to debut at Le Mans with 748 bhp plug-in hybrid V8 and minor updates Infrastructure and global readiness A key factor in hydrogen's viability remains infrastructure. Without a reliable network of refuelling stations, fuel-cell vehicles cannot be scaled. While progress has been slow, certain regions are starting to build momentum. Europe, in particular, is showing signs of investment and policy commitment. Germany, France, and Spain now account for more than half of the continent's hydrogen infrastructure capacity. Elsewhere, countries like Japan, South Korea, and Australia have begun to roll out public hydrogen stations. In Brazil, significant investment is going into establishing a green hydrogen supply chain. The global hydrogen market, valued at $77.8 billion in 2024, is projected to grow to $149.3 billion by 2033, spurred by strategic initiatives such as the EU's Hydrogen Strategy. Challenges and market uncertainty Despite growing interest, hydrogen's role in personal mobility remains uncertain. Automakers such as Honda and Toyota have long experimented with fuel-cell technology, yet mass adoption has not materialized. Current hydrogen vehicles remain limited to niche markets, and critics point out that infrastructure development has lagged far behind electric charging networks. Chris Martin of Honda, in a recent statement, acknowledged the slow pace of adoption, noting that any real shift will depend on building a broader hydrogen economy first—one that supports both commercial and personal vehicle applications. Nonetheless, with EV momentum showing signs of plateauing and regulatory support becoming more fragmented, manufacturers with existing hydrogen development pipelines may find renewed incentive to continue investing in the technology. BMW's mixed approach going forward BMW's position reflects a cautious yet flexible strategy. While it continues to expand its electric lineup—with models offering over 600 miles of range—it does not view EVs as the sole path forward. CEO Oliver Zipse has voiced concerns over regulatory policies that prioritize one technology at the expense of others, arguing that such narrow approaches could hinder long-term progress. For now, BMW plans to maintain production across three parallel streams: internal combustion, electric, and hydrogen. This multi-fuel approach may allow the company to adapt as infrastructure, policy, and consumer preferences evolve—without committing fully to one propulsion method in an uncertain global market.
