Tesla sets foot in India with Rs 61 lakh Model Y

MUMBAI: Tesla is finally here. The electric car giant run by Elon Musk opened its first India showroom in Mumbai's BKC on Tuesday. Musk had set his eyes on India since at least 2015, but high tariffs, limited flexibility, and charging infrastructure challenges, kept Tesla away from the country, which the company had described as a hard market. A 'long-range' (622km) Model Y variant will be available from Jan 2026 with an on-road price tag of just over Rs 69 lakh. For context, BMW iX1 LWB electric SUV is priced at about Rs 51 lakh on-road, and Mercedes-Benz EQA electric SUV costs just over Rs 70 lakh. Users will have a simple 'plug and charge experience' with superchargers adding up to 267km range in 15 minutes. A wall-connected home charger (70km in 1 hour) will be provided with every car. "The Tesla Model Y, available in six colours, is a compact electric SUV with a spacious interior, ample boot space , and a minimalist design. It features a touchscreen interface, 'autopilot' driver-assistance, and over-the-air software updates for the car," a Tesla executive said at the launch. Model Y's features include a bumper camera that covers blind spots during rides. At present, Tesla EVs sold in India will be imported and have limited 'autopilot' features - automatic emergency braking system, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. Tesla's experience centre at BKC, where Apple opened its first store in 2023, is seen as a way to test the waters with its retail strategy - to evaluate consumer interest and market potential. Tesla is now preparing to expand its presence by opening a showroom in Delhi. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It plans to expand to other cities as well. Sources said that in the past, there were reports of Tesla exploring plans for setting up a factory in India, but the talks stalled in 2023. Asked about plans to set up a manufacturing unit in the country this time, an executive at the new showroom declined to comment. Musk has consistently advocated for reduced duties to enhance affordability, the Indian govt maintains its stance on local manufacturing commitments. Tesla regional director Isabel Fan said, "It will all be 100% ownership and no franchisee for any showroom. Also, India has incredible talent and we are hiring local people. We have brought here Model Y - the best-selling vehicle in 2023-24."

Tesla Model Y Vs BMW iX1 LWB Compared: Price, Spec, Features

Tesla has made its India debut with the launch of the Model Y electric car. The prices of the Tesla Model Y start from Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The US-based EV maker has also launched its first showroom in India, located in the Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai. After its Mumbai facility, the brand is also eyeing its second showroom in Delhi. The Tesla Model Y competes with the BMW iX1 LWB in the national market. Here is a detailed comparison between the two electric cars. Tesla Model Y Vs BMW iX1: Battery And Powertrain The Tesla Model Y gets two battery pack options- a 60 kWh and a 75 kWh battery. The Tesla Model Y's rear-wheel drive version offers the choice of both a 60 kWh and a larger 75 kWh battery pack in India. The RWD variant is equipped with a single electric motor that generates approximately 295 hp. Furthermore, the 60 kWh battery claims to provide a WLTP range of 500 km on a single charge, while the long-range version asserts a range of 622 km. Meanwhile, the BMW iX1 houses a 66.4 kWh battery pack that is capable of pushing out a peak power and torque output of 204 hp and 250 Nm, respectively. Also, the BMW iX1 claims to deliver a MIDC range of 531 km on a single charge. Tesla Model Y Vs BMW iX1 LWB: Exterior The Tesla Model Y and the BMW iX1 have distinctive exterior appeal as the Model Y carries a much sleeker appeal, contradicting the BMW iX1's committed SUV style. The Tesla Model Y is characterized by sleek LED headlights and DRLs connected in a strip, and the front bumper resembles a lot of the one seen on the Tesla Cybercab. Also, the sloping roofline continues to the tailgate, giving it a well-finished and sleek look. BMW iX1 LWB Exterior On the contrary, the BMW iX1 LWB has a signature kidney grille with a closed-off design, iconic 4-eye front fascia featuring adaptive headlights with cornering function, and more. On the rear end, the iX1 LWD carries sculpted 3D LED taillights with triangular inserts. Also, the aluminum-patinated exterior elements like windows and roof rails make it look more premium. Tesla Model Y Exterior Tesla Model Y Vs BMW iX1 LWB: Interior And Features Tesla Model Y is equipped with a 15.4-inch touchscreen-enabled infotainment system on the front, along with an 8-inch touchscreen in the second row. Apart from this, it also has heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, 8 exterior cameras, and more. However, the Model Y misses out a panoramic sunroof and gets a glass roof instead. On the inside, the BMW iX1 LWB Veganza leather works on the interior and is highlighted by the M Sport interior package. The M door projector and aluminum-trimmed entry sills with M badging give it a sports appeal. It also gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.7-inch infotainment screen, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, dual-zone climate control, a floating center console, a panoramic roof, and more. Tesla Model Y Interior Tesla Model Y Vs BMW iX1 LWB: Price The Tesla Model Y will be sold in India at a starting price of Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) and will go up to Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom).
