What do live and boiled crawfish prices look like at the start of the season?
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) – Crawfish season has begun, according to The Crawfish App. So how will this crawfish season start compared to past seasons? The co-founder of the app, Laney King said, 'Crawfish prices are higher per pound than they were this same time in '22 and '23, but almost half of what they were this same weekend in 2024.' If you want to purchase some crawfish this weekend, the average price for boiled crawfish is $8.10 per pound and the average price for live crawfish is $5.99 per pound, according to The Crawfish App. King said, 'The incoming warmer weather should increase the crawfish supply, and hopefully we'll see a price drop after the Super Bowl weekend demand passes.' In December, Mark Shirley with the LSU AgCenter said those who enjoy crawfish should not worry about this season. Mother and daughter suffer ‘serious injuries' in pit bull attack in Ascension Parish
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) – A mother and her daughter were injured in a pit bull attack on Saturday, Jan. 25. It happened at night on Central Park Drive in Geismar and left both women 'with pretty serious injuries,' according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office. They were transported to the hospital and are recovering well after surgery, APSO said. The sheriff's office said, 'that they were house and dog sitting for a friend who was not at the residence during the attack.' They said it is not clear at this time whether charges will be filed against the dog owner in this case. APSO said the pit bull was sedated and animal control took possession of it. High speed crash in Washington Parish leaves woman dead
WASHINGTON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A woman is dead following a crash in Washington Parish. Honoring Black History: Southern University School of Nursing voted best program in the US in school's history
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Southern University School of Nursing, which has been operating for 40 years, has made history by being voted the best nursing program in the United States by first for the HBCU. Dr. Sandra Brown, dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health, said this isn't something they were expecting. 'We were competing against universities that are huge, like Emory University, University of Washington, University of Michigan, Florida State. And then there was Southern University,' Brown said. According to Brown, Southern is not only Louisiana's largest producer of Black nurses but also ranks among the top three nationwide and leads the country in producing Black male nurses. Statistics from the National University show the majority of healthcare providers are white (35.6%), followed by Black or African American (24%).
