Manipur-like situation in DK if communal tension is not curbed: Rai
Mangaluru: KPCC vice-president and former minister B Ramanath Rai cautioned that if the communal murders in Dakshina Kannada are not decisively addressed, the district could descend into ethnic strife akin to Manipur or Bosnia. He slammed the BJP for alleging that innocent Hindu workers were being harassed under the guise of law and order enforcement. "The public knows who is truly innocent," he told reporters on Wednesday. "If timely action is not taken, the district risks witnessing ethnic unrest similar to that in Manipur or Bosnia. We must ensure that Dakshina Kannada never reaches that stage. Police must be allowed to operate without any interference," Rai stressed. He alleged that those opposing police action were the very ones fuelling unrest. Lashing out at the BJP, Rai said the party and its affiliates were now accusing the govt of inaction, despite boycotting peace meetings during his tenure as district minister. "I convened several peace meetings then, but these organisations never showed up," he said, describing the BJP and its affiliates as hypocrites. Calling BJP leaders "radicals," Rai remarked, "Their children will neither go to jail nor die in the name of religion." He also cited the disqualification of Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari following his hate speech conviction and demanded similar action against elected representatives for hate speech.

MCC to repurpose shops in Urwa mkt complex
Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to repurpose the shops in the new market complex at Urwa Market , which has remained shut ever since it was inaugurated in 2019. The Muda spent Rs 12.3 crore to construct the three-storey market complex, which has nearly 85,000sqft built-up area and a parking facility. However, the market complex could not be made functional.
