Ex-minister demands SIT probe into mob lynching

Time of India01-05-2025

Mangaluru: KPCC vice-president and former minister
B Ramanath Rai
called for a
special investigation team
(SIT) investigation into the
mob lynching
reported near Kudupu. "To put an end to such incidents that tarnish the district's reputation, a thorough investigation into the background and provocation of the incident is necessary," he told reporters on Thursday.
He demanded an
SIT investigation
as an alternative to police investigation.
Despite chief minister Siddaramaiah's significant contributions to the district's development, such incidents bring disgrace. In this context, a 10-member delegation involving key leaders from the district will meet the CM to request an SIT investigation, Rai said.
"Group murders do not fit
Dakshina Kannada
, known as the district of intellectuals. Once an incident occurs here, it leads to retaliation. Therefore, strict measures and all precautionary steps should be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. As a senior citizen and a responsible citizen of the district, I am demanding this," he said.

Stating that all citizens should condemn the group murder incident without limiting it to caste or religion, Rai said that Dakshina Kannada district has a proud history and has produced many statesmen and philosophers for the country. "We are aware of the aftermath of the pub and church attacks. Subsequently, several religion-based political murders occurred, tarnishing the district's name," he remarked.
If the deceased Ashraf shouted pro-Pakistan slogans, the person is no longer alive. If the murderers claim so, they or the witnesses present can easily lead to the conviction of the culprits in court. There is a delay in police action, which must be acknowledged, he said, adding that the home minister referred the police report in connection with the incident, he mentioned.

Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Sonam may be actual mastermind, Investigators say

INDORE: Investigators in honeymoon murder case involving Sonam Raghuvanshi and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha, are now suspecting that Sonam may have been the actual mastermind behind the entire plot and Raj was just used to commit the crime. Senior police officials closely monitoring interrogation of all accused said that Sonam appears to have manipulated each one of them, luring Raj through promises of love and possibly enticing others with financial gains. Contrary to earlier speculations that Raj was the main conspirator, sources now suggest he might have been used as a pawn in a bigger plan. They suspect that Sonam was planning to elope with someone else and Raj, unaware of the larger game, ended up facilitating her escape. Senior police officials claimed that Raj made payments to cab driver who dropped Sonam in UP on June 6. Crime branch officials believe that Sonam had premeditated her hideout and had even arranged for a flat in Indore where she intended to stay for a few days after executing the plan. She selected the location, made necessary payments, and kept her stay under wraps. Interestingly, no one apart from Sonam seems to know where this flat is. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 35 & Earning? Officials now suspect that Sonam remained in Indore for most of the time while police teams and her family searched for her, with her kin even staging protests against the Meghalaya government. When she realized that their plan was falling apart, she allegedly asked Raj to book her a cab and fled to Uttar Pradesh, where she was finally traced on June 8. Indore crime branch officials have confirmed that they currently do not have address of the flat where Sonam stayed during her disappearance. They, however, said that Meghalaya police plan to bring her back to Indore for evidence verification. "Meghalaya officials will bring the accused to Indore to collect evidence and Indore police will provide all logistical and technical help. It is expected that Sonam will be brought back," said additional DCP Rajesh Dandotiya. .

17-year-old boy critical after suicide-theme reel goes wrong Maharashtra

Nashik: A Nepalese teenager sustained a severe neck injury while attempting to create a suicide-themed social media reel. The 17-year-old, who works as a waiter at a restaurant on Karmala Road in Jamkhed, is in a critical condition and currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital, said Jamkhed police. On Tuesday morning, the boy and a friend of similar age went to an isolated location, approximately a kilometre from Karmala Road. At 7.45 am, the boy tried to record a staged suicide scene. He fashioned a noose from cloth, secured it to a low tree branch, and instructed his friend to record the scene. According to social worker Sanjay Kothari, during the filming, the bent branch suddenly straightened, causing the Nepalese boy to lose consciousness from strangulation, despite standing on the ground. His friend promptly removed the noose and alerted the restaurant owner at 8am. Believing the 17-year-old had died, the owner contacted Kothari to transport the body via his free ambulance service. Upon arrival, Kothari noticed signs of life and immediately took the boy to a private hospital in Jamkhed. "The boy's condition is improving. I visited him twice on Tuesday and also on Wednesday," Kothari told TOI. 1 2 Bhubaneswar: As the Mohan Majhi govt marks its first year in office on Thursday, the Odisha police has seen significant progress across several areas, including staff recruitment, equipment upgrades, technological improvements, training enhancement, digital forensics and counter-insurgency operations throughout the year, according to a booklet, titled '1 year many milestones' compiled by the information and public relations (I&PR) department. As per the govt booklet, at least 8,271 new posts were sanctioned in the home department to further strengthen the law and order situation in the state. Additionally, 2,000 positions were established in the traffic division to handle urban traffic management across the state," the booklet read. The govt's priority to fortify the state police force was reaffirmed by the chief minister during inauguration of a new office building of the DCP here on Tuesday. "Our govt has accorded focus to strengthen Odisha police, which succeeded in maintaining law and order in the last one year. To improve the operational capabilities of police personnel, we have provided them with new vehicles and investigation kits. To strengthen anti-Maoist operations, Majhi announced in Jan a substantial increase in the monthly 'risk allowance' for Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel, elevating it from Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000. The SOG, established within Odisha Police in 2004, specialises in counter-terrorism and extremist operations. "Three new Odisha special security battalions have been raised to support anti-Maoist operations," a senior police officer said. Amid Indo-Pak tensions, govt enhanced Odisha police's readiness by establishing an anti-terrorism unit and acquiring two bulletproof armoured vehicles with light machine guns mounted on their roofs. The state police acquired advanced drones for the first time to enhance coastal security operations and counter potential maritime threats. "The govt has sanctioned about Rs 150 crore to strengthen the coastal security wing. At least 350 retired navy personnel have been engaged for coastal security. A command and control centre will soon be set up, adding teeth to our coastal security wing," the police officer said. Cybercrime investigation received priority attention during the past year. The govt announced 20 new cyber police stations while upgrading 14 existing ones. The police force underwent substantial modernisation during the last one year. Police stations received investigation equipment including laptops, smartphones, and hard disks to enhance investigative capabilities. For the first time about Rs 50 crore budget was allocated for officers' investigation expenses. "Each police station received new vehicles and motorcycles to ensure swift emergency response. Recently, 247 forensic officer positions were created to enhance the criminal justice system, in accordance with forensic evidence requirements outlined in the newly implemented criminal legislation," the senior police officer said.
