Congress protests arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh and alleges violation of rights
Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC President Sunny Joseph has urged the Governor to inform the central govt about the public outcry in Kerala against the BJP govt's action of arresting and jailing two Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh. He was speaking during a protest march led by the KPCC to Raj Bhavan, opposing the arrest of the nuns and the unconstitutional actions of the BJP regime. The Chhattisgarh govt filed false charges against the nuns, altering the FIR to deny them bail by adding non-existent sections. The BJP's oppressive rule challenges the rule of law, and the arrest of the nuns is unconstitutional. It is unfortunate that the chief minister of Chhattisgarh is justifying it. The BJP govt's actions, which violate and deny the constitutional and fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens, are shameful. Bajrang Dal activists threatened and abused the nuns while the police remained mute spectators, Sunny Joseph said. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, along with INDIA bloc MPs, raised strong protests in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. A group of UDF MPs visited the nuns in jail and demanded the Chhattisgarh govt withdraw the false case, but they refused. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like When Knee Pain Hits, Start Eating These Foods, and Feel Your Pain Go Away (It's Genius) Read More Undo The Congress will continue to raise strong protests nationwide, Sunny Joseph added. Opposition Leader V D Satheesan urged that Kerala's protest against the jailing of nuns should be conveyed to the prime minister and the Chhattisgarh govt by the chief minister without further delay. The Chhattisgarh govt unjustly jailed nuns engaged in charitable work for the common people. The Sangh Parivar challenges religious freedom, and intolerance is their hallmark. They attempt to maintain power by inciting divisions among people for political gain. The events in Chhattisgarh are the greatest example of what happens to religious minorities and common people when Congress is out of power. Our country has become a place where Christians are denied religious and prayer freedom, damaging India's international image, Satheesan added. Under BJP rule, atrocities against Christians have increased in the country. A group of UDF MPs and MLAs, along with former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, visited the nuns. The Congress will continue its protest until the nuns are granted bail, the opposition leader clarified.

Keralite nuns' arrest: KPCC takes out protest march to Raj Bhavan
The Governor should convey to the Centre about the public outrage in Kerala over the arrest and imprisonment of two Keralite nuns by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Chhattisgarh, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and MLA Sunny Joseph said. Addressing a march organised by the KPCC to Raj Bhavan on Wednesday to protest against the arrest and the unconstitutional actions of the BJP administration in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Joseph pointed out that the Chhattisgarh government had foisted false charges against the nuns and had manipulated the first information report (FIR) by adding non-existent legal clauses, thus denying them bail. He said that the BJP was challenging the rule of law and it was shameful that the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh was justifying its action against the nuns, which was a violation of the civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Inaugurating the march, the Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the Kerala Chief Minister should not waste any time in informing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister the State's strong protest against the unfounded action against the nuns . He said the Chhattisgarh government had been unfair in imprisoning the nuns who were engaged in humanitarian work. The Sangh Parivar's hallmark was intolerance. Instigating people and communities to fight against each other over religious freedom and rights was how the BJP was playing the people of Kerala, Mr. Satheesan said. An example He said the incident in Chhattisgarh was a stark example of the fate that awaited the minorities and the marginalised wherever the Congress was out of power The incident has tarnished the nation's secular image on the international front, he pointed out. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala spoke about the anxiety and insecurities faced by the religious minorities in the country today. The arrest of the nuns who were engaged in humanitarian activities amongst the poor and marginalised in Chhattisgarh was a joint attempt by the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to unleash a communal riot, he said. Mr. Modi, who makes a song and dance about greeting Christians on the occasion of Christmas, has been silent about the atrocities that were being committed against the Christians by the BJP's feeder organisations, Mr. Chennithala added. AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi, KPCC working president P.C. Vishnunath, acting president of Thiruvananthapuram DCC N. Sakthan and senior Congress leaders M.M. Hassan, V.M. Sudheeran, K. Muraleedharan, among others, spoke

Rahul Gandhi to protest against ‘electoral fraud' in Karnataka Lok Sabha polls, to submit memorandum in Bengaluru
Congress Lok Sabha MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi will on August 4 protest in Bengaluru against alleged irregularities that he said took place during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka, Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Wednesday. 'He (Gandhi) will meet Election Commission officials and submit a representation on August 4. The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) will organise events before he submits the memorandum,' the Karnataka minister told reporters. Last Thursday, Gandhi claimed he had '100 per cent proof' that the Election Commission 'allowed cheating' in a Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka and that the elections were being 'stolen'. 'I am absolutely convinced that in constituency after constituency, this is the drama that is taking place. Thousands and thousands of new voters (were added),' he alleged. Gandhi made the remarks when the Opposition parties were protesting against the Election Commission's special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. Programme details of Gandhi are yet to be finalised, Parameshwara said, responding to a question on whether a padayatra would be held. 'KPCC president (D K Shivakumar) and Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah) are finalising it. As of now, Rahul Gandhi will address party workers at Freedom Park. After that, he will submit a memorandum to the Election Commission. This is the tentative programme,' he said. Noting that Gandhi had raised complaints about electoral malpractices, Parameshwara said there had been other complaints too. 'In many constituencies, local legislators have filed complaints,' he said. Siddaramaiah echoed Rahul Gandhi's views later and suggested that the Congress suffered a setback in the April 2024 polls 'due to the illegal manipulation of electoral rolls….' 'There is clear evidence that electoral malpractice took place in Karnataka. In constituencies across the state, there were complaints by our party workers that new voters were added suddenly and in a suspicious manner, while names of long-time voters were removed without justification,' the chief minister said. The chief minister also accused the BJP of misusing the Election Commission for the purpose.

CM's bid to quell unrest backfires: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah meets MLAs without DK Shivakumar; faction war erupts in Congress
BENGALURU: CM Siddaramaiah's attempt to ease internal unrest in Congress by holding a series of meetings with party MLAs has instead intensified the ongoing power tussle within the governing party, particularly between him and his deputy, DK Shivakumar. The meetings, which started Tuesday, were intended to address legislators' grievances and distribute sanction letters for special development grants of Rs 50 crore. However, it exposed clear signs of factionalism. MLAs loyal to Siddaramaiah and those backing Shivakumar clashed openly, with differences surfacing even in the CM's presence. Although Shivakumar, also Bengaluru development minister and KPCC president, was not formally invited to the meetings, he dropped by briefly and held a discussion with the CM while he was meeting MLAs to discuss Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's proposed protest in Bengaluru on Aug 4. The protest is aimed at highlighting alleged voter fraud in Bangalore Central and Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha segments. Acting on directions from the Congress high command, Siddaramaiah has scheduled district-wise interactions with MLAs in presence of district ministers. On the first day, Siddaramaiah distributed grant letters to MLAs from Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Kodagu, and Hassan districts - once again, without Shivakumar's participation, which upset his supporters. "We were dismayed over the absence of Shivakumar," said Kunigal MLA HD Ranganath. Shivakumar sought to downplay the perceived friction. "Calling a legislators' meeting is well within the power of the CM. What is wrong with it? Surjewala, who had held meetings with MLAs, has given his feedback to the CM. The legislators' meeting is regarding that. I have no problem with the meeting, not sure why it is troubling the media," he said.
