Manipur-like situation in DK if communal tension is not curbed: Rai
Mangaluru: KPCC vice-president and former minister B Ramanath Rai cautioned that if the communal murders in Dakshina Kannada are not decisively addressed, the district could descend into ethnic strife akin to Manipur or Bosnia. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Rai, on Wednesday, welcomed the formation of a special task force to tackle communal tensions, urging it to function effectively by earning the trust of people across communities. He slammed the BJP for alleging that innocent Hindu workers were being harassed under the guise of law and order enforcement. "The public knows who is truly innocent," he told reporters on Wednesday. "If timely action is not taken, the district risks witnessing ethnic unrest similar to that in Manipur or Bosnia. We must ensure that Dakshina Kannada never reaches that stage. Police must be allowed to operate without any interference," Rai stressed. He alleged that those opposing police action were the very ones fuelling unrest. Lashing out at the BJP, Rai said the party and its affiliates were now accusing the govt of inaction, despite boycotting peace meetings during his tenure as district minister. "I convened several peace meetings then, but these organisations never showed up," he said, describing the BJP and its affiliates as hypocrites. Calling BJP leaders "radicals," Rai remarked, "Their children will neither go to jail nor die in the name of religion." He also cited the disqualification of Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari following his hate speech conviction and demanded similar action against elected representatives for hate speech.

Gatti said on Tuesday that the Union minister, instead of supporting the efforts of the state govt to establish peace and law and order in the district, has allegedly instigated the people. Despite hailing from the district and rising to powerful positions like state and Union ministers, Karandlaje did not make any efforts to put an end to communal tensions in the district, said Gatti, and sought an apology from Karandlaje. Cong leader accuses BJP MLA of not taking action during rain disaster
Mangaluru: KPCC general secretary Padmaraj R Poojary criticised MLA D Vedavyas Kamath for failing to support the rescue operations during the recent rain-related disasters. Poojary told reporters on Monday that the MLA of Mangaluru City South forgot his responsibilities and was engaged in political mudslinging even when the city witnessed artificial flooding and other disasters. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said the MLA also did not meet district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to discuss rain-related issues. "Heavy downpour caused significant destruction, including loss of lives, in Dakshina Kannada. People elected their MLAs with the hope of working for the constituency, especially in times of crisis. Unfortunately, MLA Kamath was engaged in political mudslinging targeting the Congress govt, even when roads in the city were witnessing artificial flooding," Poojary said. He stated that the BJP, which was in power in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council for five years, did not do anything to prevent the flooding of roads. The unscientific development works taken up under the Smart City Mission were also a reason for the artificial flooding. On the instructions of chief minister Siddaramaiah, the district minister visited various places, distributed ex-gratia to the families of those who died in the natural disaster, and also held official meetings to strengthen the disaster response network. Being an elected representative, Kamath should have met the minister and given his suggestions to tackle the rain damage. Condemning the murder of Abdul Rahiman, Poojary said, "I checked the background of Rahiman and I assert confidently that he was an innocent youth, who had no criminal records in any police stations. No one has the right to kill anyone, even those who have criminal records. I have confidence that the new police officers appointed by the govt will be able to establish peace and harmony in the district." In response to a query, Poojary said that he will seek more funds for disaster management in the district.

Karnataka cabinet to take call on OC for power linking
BENGALURU: Energy Minister KJ George on Thursday said the state cabinet will take a decision on removing the mandate requiring obtaining Occupancy Certificate (OC) to get power connection. He said the government understands the challenges faced by industries and homes due to mandate. The issue has been deliberated with the chief secretaries and a report with possible solutions has been prepared to be placed before the cabinet for approval. He was speaking during an interaction with party workers at the KPCC head office. George said the government had mandated the need for an OC following Supreme Court directions. 'However, to address the challenges, a by-law amendment is being considered. The issue was recently discussed in a cabinet meeting,' he said. On de-linking old RR numbers incase of new rentals to avail the Gruha Jyothi scheme, George said the process is now available online and incase people are facing problems, they can approach the jurisdictional officials.
