Delhi Unveils South Asia's Largest 20-MW Battery Energy Storage System to Boost Power Supply
New Delhi: Delhi power minister Ashish Sood on Thursday inaugurated a 20-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at Kilokari, said to be the "largest" in South Asia. The system is also India's "first commercially approved" utility-scale energy storage system that will ensure improved power supply in different south Delhi areas, covering a population of over one lakh people, according to a statement from power discom BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Limited). The 20-MW (40 MWh) BESS installed at the BRPL substation at Kilokari is the "largest" utility-scale system in South Asia. "The energy storage system is designed to deliver up to four hours of reliable daily power—two hours each during the day and night—directly benefiting over one lakh residents in the densely populated Kilokri area in south Delhi," it stated. The system offers multiple benefits such as improved power supply, enhanced grid stability, optimised power purchase costs, peak shaving, reduced overloading of the network, and renewable power integration. Strategically located at the 33/11 kV Kilokri substation, it will deliver up to four hours of reliable daily power, two hours each during the day and night, directly benefiting over 1,00,000 residents in the densely populated Kilokri area in south Delhi, said discom BSES. This initiative significantly enhances grid reliability, especially during peak demand periods, setting a new standard for urban energy management. The project, completed within a year, leverages advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology known for superior safety, thermal stability, and durability. The system's temperature-controlled containers ensure optimal operations under Delhi's diverse weather conditions, making it ideally suited for dense urban locations, the discom said. South delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, BSES director and group CEO Amal Sinha, BRPL CEO Abhishek Ranjan, and many other officials were present at the inauguration ceremony. The power minister said that the govt would deploy this new technology in Delhi and ensure the required investment for the same. "Entrepreneurs keen to work in the solar energy sector will also be supported with necessary facilities to help ensure continuous and sustainable power supply. The project will not only aid clean energy storage and green energy promotion but also marks the beginning of a new era of innovation," he said. Sood stated that implementing this 20 MW storage system will reduce the strain on Delhi's power infrastructure. The govt will scale up the model further, particularly in unauthorised colonies and areas with limited land availability or no existing grid. He said the Delhi govt's top priority is to overhaul the neglected and outdated power infrastructure of the last 10 years. The aim is to rapidly adopt new technologies to ensure smooth and round-the-clock electricity supply for the people of Delhi, he said.

Boy's Electrocution At Kalkaji Park Exposes Safety Lapses, Sparks Fear
New Delhi: A park in Kalkaji, which was once a safe and popular place for children to play, has become a source of fear after a tragic incident. A nine-year-old boy was electrocuted while playing there on Friday evening, leaving the neighbourhood shocked and grieving. The park wore a deserted look this weekend. "This park is visited by 20 to 25 children every day. It's a popular spot for kids in the area to gather, play and enjoy themselves," said Ankit, a longtime resident of Kalkaji. "To think that such an accident could have happened to any one of them is terrifying. The negligence that led to this unfortunate incident has cost the life of a young child, and it's heartbreaking for all of us in the area." On Monday, TOI visited the park and found two streetlight electrical boxes, one left open with exposed wires and another unsecured on a nearby pole—both serious hazards. Near the wiring, a pair of sandals believed to belong to the boy was found, though this wasn't confirmed. Jitender Rathore, from the local residents' welfare association, said that after the incident, officials from various departments arrived to address the defects in the park. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! She had even shared pictures of exposed electrical wires in their society's group chat to raise awareness about the issue. The boy's father, Randeep Kumar, a yoga instructor, expressed deep sorrow. "We have lived here for four years in the flat close to the park, and my son often played in the park. On that day, he went to fetch his ball when the tragedy happened," Kumar said. "He was a bright, caring child. I don't want anyone else to suffer like this." Aryaman was a fifth grader at a reputed school. The trauma affects more than Aryaman's family. Residents said children who witnessed the event were deeply shocked. Kulvinder Saini's 18-year-old daughter was present at the time of the incident and left frightened. Saini recalled that when consoling Aryaman's mother, a woman mentioned she had received an electric shock in the park years ago but no action was taken. On the incident day, the locals helped evacuate children despite risks. Residents claimed that the shock came from an electrical pole, which was now being investigated. They demanded action against those responsible for the negligence which led to the tragedy. Delhi Police said they would take action following an electrical inspection. A BSES official said that a joint site inspection was conducted by the electrical inspector, along with officials from Delhi Police, MCD and BSES, to investigate the incident. "During the inspection, a resident of the area, who rescued the boy, gave her statement to the team. She explained that the boy received the electric shock from the iron streetlight steel pole and was stuck to it," the BSES official said. The woman also said that the feeder pillar was properly closed and not involved, the official claimed. The electrical inspector tested the pole in front of the team and confirmed that a full current was flowing through it. The BSES employee claimed that the pole belonged to MCD. However, an MCD official said that upon inspection by its officials, it was found that the said electrical panel belonged to BSES. It was probably supplying electricity to adjacent residential buildings. "This panel is not under the jurisdiction or maintenance of MCD, and is not connected to any park," the official added.

9-year-old boy electrocuted while playing in MCD Park in south Delhi
A nine-year-old boy was electrocuted to death in a park in Kalkaji, south-east Delhi on Saturday night when he tried to retrieve a ball that had fallen into an open BSES electricity switchboard attached to an electric pole. The victim was identified as Aryaman Chaudhary, a Kalkaji resident. His father Randeep is a yoga teacher. Police have registered a case on charges of causing death by negligence under Section 106 and negligent conduct with respect to machinery under Section 289 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Kalkaji police station. The park is run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). MCD and BSES blamed each other for the victim's death. 'The boy was playing in the park when his ball accidentally fell into the open electric switchboard. While attempting to retrieve it he received an electric shock and was electrocuted. He was immediately taken to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The electric shock originated in a BSES electricity point housed in an iron cabin. The team is questioning every person involved including the park caretakers,' said an investigator. Police said that the boy was playing with three friends. When he collapsed, one of his friends went to check on him and he got a shock as well but wasn't injured. Seeing the child unconscious, a woman sitting nearby went to help him and got a shock as well but she managed to pick him up and take him to a hospital with the help of a few bystanders. In a statement, MCD said that the civic body's pole located in the park is completely covered and the open feeder pillar belongs to the BSES. 'It seems that while the child was playing in the park, ball travelled to the space near the open feeder pillar of BSES which proved fatal. The MCD pole in this case is completely covered,' it said. An MCD official said that the site was inspected by civic officials. 'We confirmed that the electrical panel belongs to BSES and appear to be used to supply electricity to adjacent residential buildings. This panel is not under the jurisdiction or maintenance of MCD, and is not connected to any park facility. Local residents also told us that they saw BSES personnel carrying out digging or repair work near the panel earlier in the day. It is suspected that this activity may have caused electric current leakage, leading to the tragic incident,' the official said, requesting anonymity. A BSES official said: 'Our condolences are with the family of the victim. On-ground inspection clearly established that there was no leakage from the BSES feeder pillar or any part of the discom's infrastructure. The current leakage originated from a metallic streetlight pole installed and maintained by civic agency, with power supplied through a controller managed by EESL on behalf of civic agency. The complaint was immediately acted upon by the BSES team, which dispatched the on-duty team to the site. The team's inspection confirmed no fault in BSES equipment. We are fully co-operating with the authorities in the investigations.' In a similar case in August 2024, a 13-year-old boy in Ranhola accidentally came in contact with an iron pole carrying electricity to a cow shelter while playing cricket and was electrocuted. In April 2024, a 12-year-old boy was electrocuted in Chhawla after touching an electric pole during a thunderstorm . According to the Delhi Fire Service, the Capital witnessed at least 50 cases of electrocution since 2024 which resulted in more than 20 deaths, including minors.

Storm in, power out: Delhi sees widespread outages
New Delhi: A thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall late Saturday night led to widespread power disruptions across several parts of the capital. The downpour, which also caused significant waterlogging and uprooted trees, impacted the power infrastructure, resulting in service interruptions in various localities, senior officials said. Long outages were reported in Mundka, Jaffarpur, Hari Nagar, Madipur, Tagore Garden, Chattarpur and parts of Pitampura, Rohini, Model Town, Mukherjee Nagar, Timarpur, Mayapuri, Sangam Vihar, Nand Nagri, Karawal Nagar, Ram Nagar, Bara Hindu Rao and Trilok Puri. Officials said the damage was primarily caused by tree branches falling on electric cables and water entering key installations. "Operations and maintenance teams were on high alert. Quick response teams were deployed to attend to the complaints," said a BSES spokesperson. "While supply was restored quickly in most areas, delays in some pockets happened because of the need to wait for water levels to recede and the extent of damage caused by the fallen trees," he added. The spokesperson added that in several areas, electricity was switched off temporarily to prevent electrocution. A senior official from the power department said, "Tree cutting and removal is a time-consuming process and requires coordination with civic agencies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo We took all possible steps to ensure public safety."
