Exclusive: Northrop plans to quadruple chip output by 2030

There's a chip factory tucked between Baltimore city limits and BWI Airport. For something so high-profile, it's easy to miss. Why it matters: Northrop Grumman's Advanced Technology Lab in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, is pumping out precious, microscopic components at a time of surging stateside demand, questionable defense-industrial base fitness and broader international aggression. The company's chips can be found in F-16 and E-7 aircraft, Apache helicopters, G/ATOR radars, naval electronic warfare systems, drones, the James Webb telescope and more. Driving the news: Axios toured the lab — sterile "bunny suit" and all — in late July. The intrigue: Northrop is positioning itself as a domestic expert that plays well with others, including other defense contractors. That means greater supply chain visibility for buyers and users as well as cooperation with competitors. "The company sees a lot of value in us being able to supply our microelectronics capabilities to benefit the national interest. That's national security. That's economic security," David Shahin, senior manager of Northrop's microelectronics center, said in an interview. Zoom in: The company is bullish on advanced packaging, a process that consolidates component footprints, ultimately saving space and boosting performance. Think of it like mixed-use versus single-family residential zoning. "The promise of advanced packaging for microelectronics is now you can fabricate the best chips wherever you need to," Shahin said, "and you can join them together into something that puts the whole system ... into something that is a fraction of the size."

Ikea sets open date for Hunt Valley pick-up store

Good morning readers. I hope you're staying cool this morning. With Bluesday behind us, let's start with some good news. Security checkpoints at BWI Airport and others around the country will start to smell a lot better in the coming months. You won't have to take off your shoes at the airport anymore, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed Tuesday evening. The requirements for passengers to remove shoes during security checks are expiring, and Noem said technologies adopted since the shoe rule was instituted in 2006 are sufficient to keep travelers safe. GET TO KNOW YOUR CITY Find Local Events Near You Connect with a community of local professionals. Explore All Events Please feel free to email me if you experience the keep-your-shoes-on rule in action, and explain if it is as life-changing as the internet is making it out to be. Now for the news. Ikea to open Hunt Valley store this month IKEA will open a "plan & order" store next week in Hunt Valley, the Swedish furniture and home goods store announced Tuesday. The 2,000-square-foot store at Hunt Valley Town Centre will open July 16 and offer customers pick-up and delivery services. It is the company's second small format store in the region, joining another in Annapolis. Ikea employees will work with customers to design rooms before ordering furnishings, but customers who simply ordered products online will also be able to pick up items at the location. Ikea's full-scale location in White Marsh and plan and order store in Annapolis are the company's only other Greater Baltimore locations. St. John's College in Annapolis saw a record number of applications just three years ago, but now is planning cuts across the board to make up for dipping enrollment, our Matt Hooke reports this morning. That includes teaching cuts, limiting spending on staff and more. We have the story on the impending cutbacks. Otis Rolley is thinking big as he crafts his vision for the Baltimore Development Corp. roughly two weeks into his new job as CEO. Our Melody Simmons sat down with him Tuesday to talk about the Super Block, the struggling central business district and even his morning commute. Read the full discussion. High-end cabinetry, design studio opens in Baltimore County A high-end cabinetry and design studio has opened at Greenspring Station in Baltimore County, its founders announced Monday. Designer Ashley Grason and entrepreneur Jeff Rupp launched Hampton Cabinetry to offer cabinetry, architectural planning and interior design services from custom-made products to ready-made options. The new showroom on Falls Road will offer Hampton Cabinetry's architectural services for renovations, cabinet designs and renderings, countertops and installation and construction. The company's premier custom line of products are made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Grason, a Loyola University grad, has had her design work featured in Architectural Digest, Baltimore Magazine and more. Rupp, a "serial entrepreneur" according to the announcement, has worked with Fortune 50 companies, startups and service-based businesses. Forbes investigates Baltimore company that sells financial, wellness advice Mt. Vernon-headquartered Agora Cos. has over the years been sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission and multiple state attorneys general. Despite those regulatory actions, Agora has forged on and "has found success by misleading vulnerable people," Forbes writes in a new investigation. Its subsidiaries spend millions on social media advertising related to the company's financial and health newsletters, and others "sell dietary supplements and other wellness products, through more than a dozen brands," Forbes found. You can read the Forbes piece for more details from past employees, a look at its network of subsidiaries and the strange ads drawing customers to Agora's products. ICYMI: National logistics company RPM Group Inc. has inked a deal to expand and move its local headquarters to Tradepoint Atlantic. The firm, which counts Starbucks as one of its largest accounts, expects to create 60 new local jobs. Our Melody Simmons has the details. Supreme Court says Trump can move ahead with mass layoffs Mass federal layoffs are likely to move ahead after a Monday Supreme Court order, the New York Times reports. The court ordered the lifting of a lower court's ruling against the Trump administration's plans to make major cuts to the federal workforce. The Supreme Court justices in effect allowed the administration to move ahead with cuts while legal challenges to Trump's executive orders play out in the courts. Tens of thousands of jobs could be cut in the coming weeks and months, per the Times. The impacts could be especially harsh in Maryland, where 160,000 federal civilian roles make up 6% of the state's jobs. Maryland treasurer elected board chair of retirement savings group Maryland Treasurer Dereck Davis has been elected board chair of the Maryland Small Business Retirement Savings Board, a state-sponsored group that oversees a workplace savings program. Davis succeeds Joshua Gotbaum, who chaired the group for seven years and will remain on the board. The group manages MarylandSaves, a program that employers can use to help their workers save for emergencies and retirement. The program started in 2022 to help employers comply with a law requiring most employers to offer a retirement savings program to workers, according to the announcement of Davis' election.

Smoke plume at BWI Airport caused by vehicle fire

Smoke filled the air at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport after a car caught fire Monday along the lower level terminal roadway. Firefighters responded to the terminal area around 2 p.m., when a vehicle was engulfed in flames. The lower-level roadway was closed temporarily for emergency response. BWI officials said the fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured. On Saturday, a man and two 9-year-olds died in a fiery crash after a vehicle took off from a traffic stop on I-695 in Baltimore County, according to Maryland State Police. A trooper pulled over a Jeep around 11:05 p.m. near Greenspring Avenue on I-695 before the driver left the scene, according to state police. The trooper, who didn't chase and also deactivated his emergency lights, found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames off the I-83 ramp. Troopers believe the Jeep lost control, hit an embankment, and then a tree before catching fire after exiting onto the ramp. The driver of the vehicle and two passengers were pronounced dead. Southwest Airlines said last month that it will be reducing its workforce at BWI Airport in Maryland and three other airports in California starting in June. According to a statement from the airline, some workgroups are overstaffed at BWI Airport, San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC), Los Angeles International (LAX) and Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR). The company said some employees and aircraft will be shifted to better support the company effective on June 1, 2025. "Our current flight schedule and modest growth plan for 2025 require alignments to our workforce at four airports where we operate," a Southwest Airlines spokesperson said. "We always try to minimize the impact to our employees and all will have an opportunity to remain with Southwest."
