Earth Day celebrations get kids involved in nature at Brenton Arboretum
DES MOINES, Iowa — Artists, conservationists, and business owners gathered at Brenton Arboretum to engage families with nature and celebrate the arrival of spring.
Baan Vaan Ice Cream handed out treats while kids were able to enjoy face painting, build a bug collage art, bingo and other activities. DNR conservationists had a stand featuring all things animal and fur.

The Brenton Arboretum was established in 1997, and this is the second year they have hosted an Earth Day with guests out in nature. Brenton Arboretum Executive Director Melissa Burdick says these events are a good way to get kids involved in nature at an early age.
'It's really important for us to sing the praises of nature and help people understand how we play a role in the world we live in, specifically in helping be good stewards of planet Earth,' said Burdick. 'Taking care of our ecosystems, our trees, and our wildlife is really important, and communicating that message can make the world a better place.'
Brenton Arboretum is home to more than 2,500 plants across 500 different species and hybrids. Admission to the arboretum is free, with the garden hosting regular kids' events, nature sessions, and yoga classes.
