New York's new $1,800 baby benefit offers relief for postpartum moms

By the time most new moms in America are home from the hospital, they're already doing math. Diaper costs. Lost wages. If they can afford the night nurse or housecleaner that friends say are critical to their mental health postpartum. It's a crash course in economic survival, all while healing from birth. New York State just announced a budget that takes a small but powerful step toward acknowledging that reality: a one-time, no-strings-attached $1,800 'BABY Benefit' for low-income families who welcome a new child this year. The program, officially called the Birth Allowance for Beginning Year (BABY) Benefit, was approved as part of New York's FY 2026 budget. It's designed to support families receiving public assistance by helping with the most immediate and essential newborn costs—from cribs and car seats to postpartum care, rent, or just a few precious weeks of not choosing between diapers and dinner. And crucially, this is cash assistance with no restrictions, which is nearly unheard of in the world of family support. No formula receipts to submit. No bureaucratic hoops to jump. Just help when and where moms need it most. Related: New York just made history: Pregnant workers will get paid prenatal leave starting 2025 Let's be honest: Being a new mom in America can feel like a financial punishment. We live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, yet there's still no paid federal maternity leave. Child care costs rival monthly mortgage payments. And for families living paycheck to paycheck, a single unexpected expense—a broken breast pump, a rent hike, a utility shutoff—can tip the balance from 'barely managing' to 'can't make it work.' The BABY Benefit challenges that reality. It's a message from the state that says: We see you. We value your labor. And your baby deserves a strong, supported start. By offering flexible, no-strings-attached cash at a moment when many moms are physically and financially stretched thin, New York is doing what far too few governments have had the courage to do—putting tangible resources behind all that talk about 'supporting families.' According to FingerLakes1 reporting, to receive the BABY Benefit, a family must: Live in New York State Be enrolled in public assistance programs Welcome a new child during the 2025–2026 fiscal year The Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance will release more info soon about how families can claim the funds. In addition to the $1,800 benefit, New York's FY 2026 budget includes: $2.2 billion to expand access to child care, including subsidies for New York City families $110 million in grants to build or renovate child care centers in underserved areas A partnership with Baby2Baby to provide free diapers, postpartum care kits, and self-care items to new parents An expansion of the Child Tax Credit: $1,000 per child under 4, $500 for children 4–16, and expanded eligibility for 187,000 more children The average Child Tax Credit benefit will nearly double from $472 to $943, impacting 2.75 million children across the state. Related: New York is officially the first state to mandate PTO for prenatal care Need ideas on how to use $1,800 wisely postpartum? Many moms will likely put it toward: Rent or utilities to stay housed during recovery Essential baby gear like cribs, carriers, and car seats Postpartum care Hiring a few hours of help—because sleep is health care too Want to see a program like this in your state? Start by contacting your state reps. Direct cash assistance for new moms has growing bipartisan support, especially when framed as an investment in maternal and infant health. This benefit doesn't fix everything—but for thousands of New York families, it's a financial exhale when they need it most. In a country where most new moms are asked to 'make it work' with broken systems and empty platitudes, $1,800 is more than just money. It's a message: You—and your baby—matter.

By Heidi Parker Lauren Sanchez gathered her friends for her The Fly That Flew To Space book party in September. The move revealed who is in her inner circle. There was Kim and Khloe Kardashian as well as momager Kris Jenner and RHOBH vet Kathy Hilton, who is also Paris Hilton 's mother. Also seen were fashion model Miranda Kerr and jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer, who used to be wed to Tobey Maguire. But there were many lesser known faces. They included Modern Family actress October Gonzalez, stylist Victoria Trilling, Co-CEO Baby2Baby Kelly Sawyer, stylist Jamie Mizrahi, photo coach Elena S Blair and entrepreneur Tina Chen Craig. Also seen were actress Xochitl Gomez, Elsa Marie Collins - the founder of The Ideateur, a social impact and civics consultancy - and Bachelor vet Lucy Aragon. Then there was makeup artist Amanda Diaz, and Laura Wasserman, who used to be married to Casey Wasserman, the president of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee. Lauren's new book is already a NYT bestseller. 'Congratulations @laurenwsanchez on your book, The Fly Who Flew To Space,' wrote Khloe on Instagram. 'Inspired by her childhood battle with dyslexia and a lifelong love of flying. 'This book is an inspiring and imaginative story that sparks curiosity and imagination while at the same time it encourages us all to shoot for the stars ✨.' Khloe then added: 'Thank you for being vulnerable and for creating a book that will allow other children to feel seen. 'Order the @theflywhoflew for yourself or your babies - such a sweet and positive read that teaches so many lessons of determination, resilience and believing in yourself!' Lauren also posted photos from the bash. 'I've learned so much during the launch of my book and that includes knowing the importance of good friends,' wrote the former TV star. 'Women who scoot over and make room for other women to 'have a seat at the table.' Women who uplift each other. View this post on Instagram A post shared by October (Tobie) Gonzalez ✨ (@octobergonz) View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝓥𝓲𝓬𝓽𝓸𝓻𝓲𝓪 𝓣𝓻𝓲𝓵𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓰 (@vtrilling) Meanwhile, Lauren is being sued by her former yoga instructor for allegedly plagiarizing the instructor's children's book. In the lawsuit, which was obtained by TMZ, Alanna Zabel alleges that Sánchez's children's book The Fly Who Flew To Space, which was published in August, substantially rips off her 2022 children's book Dharma Kitty Goes To Mars. Zabel, who sent Sánchez two cease-and-desist letters ahead of the latter book's publication, claims to have contacted the high-profile entertainment reporter in 2022 to pitch a children's book concept about a cat who flies to Mars. The yoga instructor, who says she taught Sánchez from 2007 to 2010, alleges in the lawsuit that the theft is related to Sánchez's 'continual and outrageous acts of jealousy' over the years. has reached out to Zabel and a representative for Sanchez to request comment. Zabel accuses Sánchez of copying parts of her book to get back at her for quitting as her yoga instructor more than a decade ago. The instructor, who notably filed her lawsuit without a lawyer, doesn't specify what kind of 'jealousy' Sánchez allegedly displayed. However, she does accuse Sánchez of having 'always demonstrated a desire to appear like [Zabel], an authentic, independent, free-spirited, hard working and public service oriented yoga instructor.' As she describes it, the relationship could have had a modest benefit for Bezos-affiliated charities, as she claims that the proceeds for the book would have benefitted the Bezos Earth Fund and Bezos Academy. Bezos used $10 billion in 2020 to create the Bezos Earth Fund, which doles out grants to projects combating climate change and preserving nature spaces, with an emphasis on projects that will be completed within the current decade, rather than on more speculative, long-term projects. The former Amazon CEO's Bezos Academy stresses the importance of preschool in children's development and works to build Montessori-style preschools in underserved communities. In April, Zabel told that she was furious when Sánchez announced her own children's book in January of 2023. 'I'm deeply offended, and I am taking legal action with the book,' she said at the time. Zabel said that she had spent time at Sánchez's house while working as her instructor, and she had shared her love of children's books and even discussed the prospect of helping Sánchez write a children's book with her brother Michael. She shared that she had ended her services for Sánchez due to relentless 'gossiping,' and added that she 'couldn't handle her personality anymore,' but Zabel added that the two had remained cordial in the subsequent years. Zabel's suit claims that the media figure's book features more than 60 percent of similar text and story, though the methodology for arriving at that percentage is unclear. However, as TMZ notes, several children's books have been released in 2024 alone about characters venturing into space. There have also been multiple children's books featuring insects as main characters in the past year. Zabel is known for teaching yoga to several of celebrity clients, including Maroon 5's Adam Levine and author Deepak Chopra.
