Springfield Cardinals take season opener
SPRINGFIELD–The Springfield Cardinals had to wait an extra 24 hours to open the 2025 AA season, but it was well worth the wait.
Behind Tekoah Roby's stellar performance on the hill of five strikeouts over four scoreless innings, the Baby Birds won their first game of the season against the Wichita Windsurge, 6-2.
With the Opening Day victory, Roby gets a little bit of redemption for missing a significant portion of last season due to injury. His command and arsenal was on point from the first pitch. He devestated hitters with a nasty breaking ball, that was set up by great command and location of his fastball.
Roby struckout the side in the top of the third to put an exclamation point on his outing.
At the plate, his teammates gave him plenty of early run support. Tallying four runs in the first three innings. Dakota Harris drove in a pair of runs, as did Jeremy Rivas. Both players helped the club put space between them and Wichita when the Cardinals scored three of their four runs in the bottom of the third.
Rivas also smacked the team's first home run of the summer with a solo shot to left in the bottom of the 6th.
Sunday, the Birds will host a double header. First game starts at 1pm with the second game soon to follow.
