Backroads Creates New Adventure Trips For Millennials And Gen Zers
Backroads' new 30s & 40s collection Backroads, which calls itself the world's #1 active travel company, is known for its walking, biking, and multi-adventure trips all over the globe. Now it's appealing to millennials and Gen Zers with a new offering of 34 trips and more than 70 departures designed for travelers in their 30s and 40s. The company's new 30s & 40s collection is based on some of Backroads' best itineraries. It includes a Dolomites Walking & Hiking Tour, a Peru Lodge-to-Lodge Trekking, and a Berlin to Prague Bike Tour. What makes these trips different is fresh energy and the company of active travelers at a similar younger life stage. 'There was an opportunity out there to create a segment of trips with guests at a similar stage of life in their 30s and 40s.' 'We saw a huge gap in the market in terms of luxury group travel and active travel trips for guests in their 30s and 40s,' Avery Hale Smith, Backroads' Chief Experience Officer, said in an interview. Smith, who's spearheading this launch, added that 'a lot of the companies out there who do focus on millennials are focusing on either extreme sports or maybe budget trips or just solo travelers. Nobody is really doing it in the way Backroads is doing it,' Backroads' new 30s & 40s Collection The way Backroads does it is offering active travel – walking, biking, and multi-adventures –mixed with various levels of luxury, carefully planned itineraries, well-trained and enthusiastic trip leaders, memorable hotels, a focus on food and wine, and a wide range of destinations worldwide. Backroads was groundbreaking when they began segmenting their trips years ago, offering Classic trips designed for couples, friends, and solos, and then classifying family trips by children's age groups. In 2023, they launched Women's Adventures. Now they've targeted younger travelers with the same approach. Backroads' new 30s & 40s Collection 'There was an opportunity out there to create a segment of trips with guests at a similar stage of life in their 30s and 40s,' Smith said, 'and we had seen so much success with our age-segmented trips in the past. There is sort of a shared experience when you are of the same age category or bracket that leads to that greater sense of connection, and we think that this will be a huge part of the experience.' 'We are coming into the largest wealth transfer in history,' Smith said, referring to the Great Wealth Transfer, where $27 trillion is expected to pass from boomers to their offspring by 2045. 'Millennials are starting to really prioritize experiences and experiential travel. They are willing to spend money on travel more than the past generation.' These trips are also an opportunity to jump on a transforming world, as generations shift. 'We are coming into the largest wealth transfer in history,' Smith said, referring to the Great Wealth Transfer, where $27 trillion is expected to pass from boomers to their offspring by 2045. 'Millennials are starting to really prioritize experiences and experiential travel. They are willing to spend money on travel more than the past generation, and so we really want to be able to take advantage of that and meet the demand with these trips.' The '30's & 40's collection is based on Backroads Classic Trips. While they are not physically more challenging, 'we did curate this collection of itineraries in a way that we think will cater most to what in our 30s and 40s are looking for,' Smith noted. From our own market research and the guest feedback that we've gotten, there are a few themes that rise to the top in terms of what people are looking for.' Backroads' new 30s & 40s Collection Smith says that 'bucket list destinations, and off the beaten path locations, deep authenticity and cultural immersion in terms of meals and food' are important. Less so are Michelin-star experiences. Instead, she said it will likely be 'farm to table or hidden gem locations that we think might resonate better with this demographic.' Other trips that are part of the 30s & 40s collection are Canadian Rockies Heli-Hiking Tour, Vietnam & Cambodia Bike Tour, A Taste of Camino de Santiago Walking & Hiking Tour, and Alaska's Glaciers & Coast Multi-Adventure Tour. 'One of the great things about these trips is that so many of our trip leaders are within this demographic themselves,' Smith said. 'They play a really integral role in the Backroads trip experience on all of our trips, but we expect that they're actually going to enhance the trip experience of these 30s and 40s even more so can really speak to the vision behind it, including how Backroads is evolving with the next generation of adventurous travelers.' Exciting New Trips Launch in Bali, Colombia, Moab, Norway, the Pyrenees, Tasmania and More Welcome Growing Numbers of Women Travelers BERKELEY, Calif., May 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Backroads, the global leader in active travel, today announced 18 new Walking & Hiking Women's Adventures for 2026, expanding the offering to 250 departures worldwide. Breathtaking new destinations include Colombia and the Pyrenees plus US hotspots such as Death Valley and Moab. For active, travel-savvy moms, there's nothing like the combination of adventure and "me-time" for the ultimate Mother's Day gift. An even greater gift, however, may be the opportunity these trips afford mothers and daughters to spend quality time together, as evidenced by the number of mother-daughter bookings Backroads is seeing. After launching in 2024, Women's Adventures sold quickly. Backroads expanded the collection to meet soaring demand, which shows no signs of slowing. Bookings more than doubled in 2025, exceeding all projections and expectations. In 2026, Backroads will offer over 60 different Women's Adventures across the globe, with even more new trips to be revealed this June. The average guest score for Women's Adventures is 9.7 out of 10, making them some of the company's most highly rated trips. Women love these experiences so much that they're signing up for their next Women's Adventure while still on their first, sometimes with the new friends they've made along the way. The female camaraderie and support makes these trips extra special, according to guest feedback. Women's Adventures celebrate female relationships, curiosity and strength and welcome a diversity of travelers, whether friends or sisters, or mothers and daughters looking to celebrate milestones together, with multiple generations of women or solo travelers interested in connecting with others who have similar interests. These trips aren't about who's the strongest athlete or who can go the farthest. Women's Adventures offer the freedom to choose the path they want to take and to make the experience whatever they want it to be. 5 Easy European E-Bike Trips For 2025
E-biking in Portugal with Macs Adventure Whether you call them e-bikes or electric-assist bikes, these battery-boosted bicycles offer a new way to see the world. According to the Adventure Travel Trade Association, cycling with e-bikes was a top-trending European activity in 2024. E-bikes are heavier than a conventional bike, but relatively simple to ride. Yet it's important to know that these bikes must still be pedaled. Their small motor allows you to add a power boost while pedaling, shifting gears, and balancing, which are pretty much the same as on a conventional bike. What they really do is open up a whole new world of cycling, especially for those who want to explore hillier places or don't have the endurance to go on self-generated pedal power alone. They also allow you to ride with a companion who might be a stronger or more accomplished rider and has chosen to ride a conventional road or touring bike. They're ideal for couples of mixed biking ability to ride together and for multi-generational groups of riders. Here's what some major travel companies offer in 2025, on trips that were available at press time. Macs Adventure has many self-guided e-bike trips, including Cycle from Minho to Porto. The eight-day trip starts at the spa town of Monção at the Spanish border, includes a stop in Barcelos, located on the Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail, and finishes at the colorful city of Porto. It's a ride that offers Portugal's astounding Atlantic coastline and coastal nature reserves. Accommodation is in comfortable four-star hotels, and two wine tastings are included. Rated moderate, it's priced from $1,950 per person. The cost of an e-bike is an additional $250. E-biking in Slovenia with Trek Travel. Trek offers a Slovenia Bike Tour: From Lake Bled to Italy along the Goriška Brda Wine Region. This six-day ride includes a pletna boat ride on Lake Bled, an opportunity to explore the medieval town of Cividale del Friuli, and a ride through the wine region of the Goriška Brda region. The trip continues to Slovenia's only national park, Triglav National Park, and the glacial Lake Bohinj. Riders also cross the Slovenia-Italy border to the Fusine Lakes in the Julian Alps. Rated difficulty level 3 (out of 4), the cost is $4,399 per person. E-biking in Provence with Backroads The Provence Luberon to Lavender Country Easygoing E-bike Tour is a dedicated e-bike trip from Backroads. One of their Dolce Tempo trips, with a more relaxed pace, you bike from Saignon to Mane-de-Provence, through beautiful villages such as Bonnieux, Roussillon, and Gordes, past vineyards and lavender fields. The trip includes two nights at Les Couvent des Minimes, a 17th-century convent transformed into a spa hotel by L'Occitane. The final night's dinner is at the Michelin-starred Le Feuillée. This six-day trip is priced from $5,799. Puglia e-biking with VBT. VBT has chosen the coast of Puglia for this off-the-beaten-path guided e-bike trip. Italy: Puglia's Undiscovered Coast is a seven-day excursion with overnights in luxurious masserie, restored fortified farms typical of the area. The biking route includes some of the most historic towns in the region, such as Monopoli, the walled city of Acaya, and Otranto, a town built by the Greeks. It's a trip that combines seaside views with olive groves and historic towns. Rated easy, the seven-day trip is priced from $5,145. Biking in Costa Brava with ExperiencePlus! Bicycling Catalonia's Costa Brava is an eight-day trip from ExperiencePlus! The ride begins in Girona and continues east towards Costa Brava and the rolling hills of the Emporda region. This journey, filled with Roman ruins and medieval towns, finishes in Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dali. The trip is rated Classic 2.5 (on a scale of 1 to 5). The price is $4,950, and there's a $250 surcharge for a hybrid e-bike.
