73 casualties recorded during 1st monthof Char Dham yatra, most health-related

Dehradun: As many as 65 pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham yatra this year died due to health issues, mainly cardiac-related, while eight were killed in accidents on the route, according to state govt sources. Officials said that of the pilgrims who died due to heart-related and other complications, maximum were on the Kedarnath yatra (30) followed by Badrinath (15), Yamunotri (12) and Gangotri (8). Last year, 246 people had succumbed during the 6-month-long yatra due to a combination of health reasons as well as accidents. Health secretary of Uttarakhand, R Rajesh Kumar said, "A large number of pilgrims were brought dead to the health facilities. Still, this year, there are 10 fewer casualties as compared to the previous year in the corresponding duration." He added that "the screening of around 4.3 lakh pilgrims was conducted at health centres along with medical relief posts within the yatra's first month." "A robust health infrastructure is in place on the yatra route. This includes 69 medical officers, 121 staff nurses, 26 pharmacists, 309 oxygen-equipped beds, 6 ICU beds, 13 departmental ambulances, one blood bank and two blood storage units," Kumar said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo As per official data, pilgrims who died during the yatra mainly hailed from Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana. Also, most of the fatalities took place among comorbid people aged between 45 and 65 years. The pilgrims' health screening showed that around 17,800 people suffered comorbidities and were classified under the 'high-risk' pilgrims category. While 294 were referred to health facilities via ambulances, 3,900 pilgrims were counselled regarding red flags pertaining to their health and 29 were convinced to go back home and take up the yatra when in a better state of health. Twenty-six pilgrims were taken to the healthcare centre by heli service in the ongoing first month of the yatra. The four shrines are situated at elevations exceeding 10,000 feet in the Garhwal Himalayas, making the pilgrimage particularly challenging for individuals with underlying health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or ailments related to the kidneys, liver, respiratory system, or heart. The high altitude results in lower oxygen levels and extreme cold, often plunging below freezing, which poses serious risks to those with comorbidities. The annual yatra began with the opening of the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines on April 30, followed by the ceremonial reopening of the Kedarnath and Badrinath temples on May 2 and May 4, respectively.

Ensure sustainability of network investments: GSMA chief to regulators

NEW DELHI: Regulators worldwide should ensure a level-playing field and facilitate infrastructure deployment following concerns around sustainability of network investments in the wake of over-the-top (OTT) or mobile app-based services, a top GSMA executive said. 'There are growing concerns around the sustainability of network investment. Regulators should ensure a level playing field that encourages ongoing infrastructure development, while fostering innovation and consumer choice,' Vivek Badrinath , director-general, GSMA, told ETTelecom. In April this year, London-based GSMA appointed Badrinath to the top GSMA executive leadership role replacing Mats Granryd. WhatsApp , Messenger, Telegram, Viber and Google Talk are some of the leading mobile communication applications with operators demanding a 'fair share' from them for carrying data traffic on their networks. On the contrary, OTT providers argue that telcos should be the ones paying mobile app players for pushing data traffic onto their networks. More than 70% of the data traffic on telecom networks is being generated by OTT providers alone. Further, Badrinath said that a transparent, and future-ready regulatory framework would be essentially required, considering "fair contribution models" and shared responsibility for network resilience. 'We believe in a balanced and collaborative approach, OTT players and mobile operators both benefit from - and contribute to - the digital ecosystem,' the top GSMA executive added. Like other nations, India does not have a policy framework or regulatory regime for OTT platforms. The Delhi-based Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) that represents Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, said that since telecom service providers and OTT communication players offer same service, a level-playing field should be ensured with the former spending huge money in spectrum purchase and network deployment. India's telco group also advocated that players who are large traffic generators (LTG) must also pay a fair share to network service operators toward capital expenditure (capex) in putting up telecom infrastructure. In 2023, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) released a consultation paper seeking comments from stakeholders on the regulatory mechanism for a selective ban of OTT players. Incumbent telcos Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) in a response to telecom watchdog, favoured a compensation model from mobile apps, for deploying and maintaining telecom networks by them that enables OTT platforms to offer seamless services to their subscribers. Earlier, head of Asia Pacific at GSMA Julian Gorman said that "a fair share contribution by tech companies or OTT players would bring motivation to investors." The mobile data traffic is expected to reach 415 million terabytes per month by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 19.8% from 2024 to 2030, according to a recent Research and Markets study. The finding by the Dublin-based research firm attributed escalating video streaming consumption and social media content in addition to next generation or 5G networks as key data traffic growth drivers worldwide. Early this year, the German market reserach firm Statista in a study said that the OTT video users are likely to reach 4.9 billion by 2029.

Uttarakhand: Divyang Jeevan Joshi creates artwork on pine bark, PM Modi salutes his spirit

People consider pine bark to be useless, but Jeevan Chandra Joshi, a resident of Haldwani in Uttarakhand, is bringing life to wood with his artwork. Without any modern tools, he has carved many life-like figures on the bark with his hands, and people are also amazed to see his creations. He has made many artefacts on this bark, including a replica of pilgrimage sites like Badrinath, Kedarnath, traditional drums, musical instruments, conch, Shivling, map of India, etc. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme on Sunday, mentioned the unique wooden artwork of polio-stricken Jeevan Joshi and also praised him. Jeevan Joshi was exhilarated and proud to know that PM Modi praised his artwork publicly. The 65-year-old Jeevan Chandra Joshi, a resident of Katgharia, never let his physical disability affect his art. Today, he is an expert in an art that is being appreciated not only in the country but also abroad. He is the first person to be awarded the Senior Fellowship by the Ministry of Culture for working on pine baguette, i.e. the dried bark of the pine tree. This achievement not only recognises his art but also sets an example that there is no substitute for hard work and dedication. Joshi is suffering from polio. He has had difficulty walking since childhood, but due to his high-flying spirit, he has become self-reliant and has now become an inspiration for others. He learned the art related to wood and bark from his father. The compulsion of not being able to go out of the house forced him to discover a different world within the house. This journey made him a master craftsman. He told IANS that he has been practising this art for 25 to 30 years. He not only adopted this art himself but has now started training some local children in this art as well. He believes that if the government promotes this art, migration from the mountains will stop and local people will get employment. He says that the path to self-employment lies in such arts, and there is a need to preserve and promote them. Meanwhile, local social worker Narendra Sharma said, "Artists like Jeevan Chandra Joshi are our heritage. The government should provide a platform to such people so that their art reaches the new generation. Their story is not just an inspiration, it is a story of change."
