Aubrey Plaza earns standing ovation after first red carpet appearance since husband's death
Aubrey Plaza made a poignant return to the spotlight, walking her first red carpet since the death of her husband in January. The Marin County homeowner attended the Cannes Film Festival last week in support of the new dark comedy 'Honey Don't!' Plaza stars as a cop who falls into a love affair with a small-town private detective, played by Margaret Qualley (' The Substance '), as they investigate 'a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church,' according to the film's synopsis on IMDB. The project also features Chris Evans (who can be seen next month in Celine Song 's 'Materialists'), Charlie Day and Billy Eichner. During its Cannes premiere on Friday, May 23, Plaza and her castmates received a six-minute standing ovation, with one audience member yelling out 'I love you Aubrey' in support of the star, according to Variety. 'More queer cinema all the time,' the film's writer, Tricia Cooke, declared during the applause. 'Honey Don't!' is set to hit theaters Aug. 22, making it Plaza's first feature since her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, committed suicide on Jan. 3. The actor is slowly easing back into the public eye as she heals from the loss. In February, she made a live television appearance during 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special' wearing a pink tie-dyed T-shirt, a fashion statement many considered a tribute to both the hobby Baena took up during the pandemic and their wedding day outfits. A week prior, she starred in a Super Bowl commercial for Ritz Crackers, which was filmed last November. The couple had been together for more than a decade, but split months before Baena's death. He reportedly made 'concerning remarks' to Plaza that prompted her to ask a friend to 'perform a welfare check' on him, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner. Plaza now seems ready to return to work. She recently signed on for a new drama, 'The Accompanist,' in which she'll play a rookie child-welfare agent. The film follows a new foster parent, played by Susan Sarandon, as she takes in a 9-year-old girl after she was nearly killed by her dementia-stricken grandfather.

Aubrey Plaza makes powerful red carpet comeback five months after Jeff Baena's death at 2025 Cannes closing; watch pics
Aubrey Plaza is slowly returning to the spotlight months after the tragic death of her husband and filmmaker Jeff Baena, who left her shaken. The Parks and Recreation star has largely kept out of major events, but on May 24, she returned to the red carpet for her upcoming film, Honey Don't!, walking alongside her co-stars in a floor-length dress. This marks her first major public appearance since she stepped out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, where she paid a quiet tribute to her late husband in a tie-dye shirt on stage, one of his most popular designs. No over-the-top couture drama unlike her previous looks, she went for a lacy, sleeveless nude gown, covered in colourful beads and stones, transparent at the bottom. Underneath, she styled a white bodysuit that complemented the sheer fabric. For the makeup, she kept it minimal, no hair accessories, and just a pair of diamonds dangling by the ears. Post the screening of her movie, the actor was seen interacting with the guests and even posed confidently for the camera, though she avoided giving a speech afterwards. But this red carpet appearance wasn't just about fashion—it marked her powerful yet emotional return to the spotlight after the loss of Baena, who died by suicide in January at the age of 47. However, in the days leading up to his death, it was reported that the couple had been separated for nearly four months at the time. An investigation launched to uncover the reason behind Baena's suicide included a report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner that confirmed Baena was struggling emotionally and had even started undergoing therapy. In fact, back in October 2024, he made some concerning comments over a phone call and text messages to Plaza, leading her to call a friend to check in on him. On January 3, a house help found Baena unresponsive in his Los Angeles-area home, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. Plaza broke her silence on January 6: 'This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support,' she said in a statement, and added, 'Please respect our privacy during this time.' Later, during SNL 50, Plaza was invited to introduce Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard for a special performance. Later, appearing on Drew Barrymore's show, Plaza opened up a bit about their love story that blossomed during the quarantine. 'Jeff got really into tie-dyeing during the quarantine. So, I decided that Jeff and I were going to wear tie-dye pyjamas that he had made for us,' she said. Baena was known for films like Life After Beth (2014) and The Little Hours (2017). Now, Plaza is easing back into work mode. Honey Don't!, her new film, tells the story of an investigator from a small town and stars uncovering a mysterious case of deaths tied to a church. The film was selected for the premieres.

Bayern Munich forward available at reduced price
Bayern Munich winger Bryan Zaragoza will be on the move this summer, and he could be set for a second return to Spain. The Bavarian side are looking to move on from the former Granada man, and will look for a permanent sale after a loan move to Osasuna this season. The 23-year-old struggled to adapt to life in Munich, and after six months was back in Spain on loan in Pamplona. This season has been inconsistent and interrupted by injury, but he has shown flashes of his brilliance, earning another Spain call-up late last year. It has resulted in one goal and six assists in his 26 Liga appearances. CF Bayern Insider report that Bayern consider him a failed bet though, and have accepted that they will lose money on a deal. In other words, they are willing to accept a lower offer than the €17m they paid Granada for him. Villarreal interest in Bryan Zaragoza Villarreal are interested in being the benefactors of that development. As explained by Relevo, the Yellow Submarine want to strengthen their squad ahead of the Champions League, and Zaragoza is one of two major attacking objectives they are looking at, ahead of the likely departure of Alex Baena this summer. Bryan Zaragoza will be on the move again this summer. Alberto Moleiro also on the move this summer The other is Las Palmas starlet Alberto Moleiro. The 21-year-old, who reportedly has a €25m release clause, was in tears in his final game of the season at the Estadio Gran Canaria, which many took to be a sign that he will be on his way too. Like Baena, Moleiro turned down a move to Saudi Arabia in January, but will leave Las Palmas. He has six assists and one goal in his 35 appearances for Las Palmas. Reinvesting the Alex Baena money? No doubt Villarreal will be planning for Baena's exit, if it does happen. Atletico Madrid have been strongly linked with a move for Baena, and Villarreal have apparently agreed to let him go this summer, even if his own €60m release clause is not paid. Moleiro would certainly be a similar option in terms of the role he plays for Las Palmas, and someone with room for growth.

Aubrey Plaza takes on first film since husband's death
Aubrey Plaza is officially back to work after her husband's death in January. The part-time Marin County resident is starring in actor and comedian Zach Woods' film, 'The Accompanist,' along with Everly Carganilla ('The Chair') and Susan Sarandon ('Thelma & Louise'), according to Deadline. Plaza plays a rookie child-welfare agent in the drama, which is currently in postproduction. The project follows new foster parent Sylvia (Sarandon) as she takes in 9-year-old Emily (Carganilla) after her dementia-stricken grandfather nearly got her killed. 'Life can feel so lonely sometimes,' Woods said in a statement about the film, which will mark his directorial debut. 'I think it's worth telling stories about how scary, funny, and glorious it is when we're brave enough to try to find our way to each other in the dark.' Plaza is easing back into the public eye since her husband, Jeff Baena, died by suicide on Jan. 3. In February, the ' My Old Ass ' actor starred in a Super Bowl commercial for Ritz crackers this year that was filmed before Baena's death. She made a live television appearance during 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special' the week after, wearing a pink tie-dyed T-shirt, which many believed to be a nod to the hobby that Baena started during the COVID-19 pandemic and their wedding day outfits. 'Jeff got really into tie-dying during the quarantine, so I decided that Jeff and I were going to wear tie-dye pajamas that he had made for us (for the wedding),' Plaza revealed during an appearance on 'The Drew Barrymore Show' in December 2021, just months after Plaza casually announced their impromptu nuptials. The couple had been together for more than a decade but separated months before Baena's death. About a month after the split, Baena allegedly made 'concerning remarks' to the actor that pushed her to 'call a friend to perform a welfare check' on him, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Manchester United enquire about 23-year-old La Liga assist king
Villarreal playmaker Alex Baena has been one of the most consistent and thrilling performers in La Liga over recent seasons, but after turning down a move to Saudi Arabia in January, it looks as if the Yellow Submarine will have to bid farewell to him this summer. Baena has a €60m release clause, and a number of giants in Europe are interested in him. Primarily, Atletico Madrid. Baena has been cited as one of their top targets this summer, and have already opened informal talks with Villarreal to that end. The Yellow Submarine have noted that they would be willing to accept around €50m for Baena, but Atletico are considering trying to bring the price down by including a player in the deal. Either way, Eduardo Burgos has reported that Los Colchoneros are hopeful about sealing a deal for Baena before the Club World Cup in June. He does say that no formal negotiations have taken place though, and explains that Bayern Munich and Manchester United have also enquired about Baena's services. Presumably the price tag would not be an issue for either of those sides. Photo by EPA Baena has again been in fine form this season, having managed to break into the Spain team last summer, playing a role in their Euro 2024 victory, and a starring spot in their Olympic gold medal just weeks later. This season Baena has played 28 games, scoring six times and giving eight assists. Over the last two seasons, no player has given more assists than Baena in Spain, reaching a remarkable 18 assists in all competitions, although Villarreal were in the Europa League last season. Skilled at set pieces, with excellent vision and a competitive edge, if anything it is surprising that Baena was not the subject of more interest last summer. Aston Villa did make an approach, and Baena has expressed admiration for Barcelona in the past.
