Aubrey Plaza earns standing ovation after first red carpet appearance since husband's death
The Marin County homeowner attended the Cannes Film Festival last week in support of the new dark comedy 'Honey Don't!' Plaza stars as a cop who falls into a love affair with a small-town private detective, played by Margaret Qualley (' The Substance '), as they investigate 'a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church,' according to the film's synopsis on IMDB.
The project also features Chris Evans (who can be seen next month in Celine Song 's 'Materialists'), Charlie Day and Billy Eichner.
During its Cannes premiere on Friday, May 23, Plaza and her castmates received a six-minute standing ovation, with one audience member yelling out 'I love you Aubrey' in support of the star, according to Variety.
'More queer cinema all the time,' the film's writer, Tricia Cooke, declared during the applause.
'Honey Don't!' is set to hit theaters Aug. 22, making it Plaza's first feature since her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, committed suicide on Jan. 3.
The actor is slowly easing back into the public eye as she heals from the loss. In February, she made a live television appearance during 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special' wearing a pink tie-dyed T-shirt, a fashion statement many considered a tribute to both the hobby Baena took up during the pandemic and their wedding day outfits.
A week prior, she starred in a Super Bowl commercial for Ritz Crackers, which was filmed last November.
The couple had been together for more than a decade, but split months before Baena's death. He reportedly made 'concerning remarks' to Plaza that prompted her to ask a friend to 'perform a welfare check' on him, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Plaza now seems ready to return to work. She recently signed on for a new drama, 'The Accompanist,' in which she'll play a rookie child-welfare agent. The film follows a new foster parent, played by Susan Sarandon, as she takes in a 9-year-old girl after she was nearly killed by her dementia-stricken grandfather.

Wednesday season two has officially arrived on Netflix, welcoming us back to the world of Nevermore Academy as Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) returns to school for another year. When season two was first announced the streamer also announced a bunch of exciting new cast members who would be joining the lineup including Lady Gaga, Thandiwe Newton, Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Heather Matarazzo, and Dame Joanna Lumley. And now that the first four episodes are out on Netflix, we've been able to see these new characters in action. Well, except for one major exception. Lady Gaga is nowhere to be seen (and no she's not invisible likes Agnes either). So why is the icon missing from the first half of Wednesday season 2? Here's what you need to know. All the way back in season 1, Lady Gaga had a majorly unexpected involvement in the show, thanks to her song 'Bloody Mary' going viral after Wednesday danced to it during one of the scenes. Following this, in November of 2024, it was announced that Lady Gaga would be joining the cast in an undisclosed role in season 2. And so given this, we were all very hyped up to see the singer make an appearance during the season. However, as the show is being split in two, it turns out Gaga won't actually be starring in the first half. Given how she was absent for the premiere and all the press junkets for Wednesday so far, it's perhaps not surprising that she didn't appear in the first four episodes which came out on Wednesday, Aug. 6. One thing we do know is Lady Gaga is reportedly said to have a new song debuting in Wednesday season 2 part 2, which will coincide with her guest star role. Tim Burton recently spoke about Gaga's involvement in the series, telling Variety: 'She's such an artist and so for me, working with an artist is inspirational.' When she does eventually make her appearance in the second half of Wednesday season 2, we do know who she will be playing. Back in May 2025 at Netflix's live Tudum event, the streamer confirmed Lady Gaga will be playing 'the mysterious and enigmatic Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday.' Given the words 'legendary' some fans have theorized this means Gaga's character is not alive and instead could appear as a spirit of some kind. Either way we're really hoping a duet with Wednesday is on the cards.

We're over halfway through 2025, and I think I can pretty confidently say that Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary celebrations were the most star-studded events of the year so far. Between the concert on Feb. 14 and the special episode on Feb. 16, pretty much everyone who's ever been on SNL or hosted it in its history showed up to celebrate. Guests included the likes of Robert De Niro, Kim Kardashian, Will Ferrell, Scarlett Johansson, Keke Palmer, Lady Gaga, Jimmy Fallon, Billy Crystal, Pedro Pascal, David Letterman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Drew Barrymore, Meryl Streep, Seth Meyers, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bad Bunny, Chris Rock, Jon Hamm, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Paul McCartney, and Tom Hanks. Like, I'm not sure more famous people have ever been in the same room, ever. Related: And while there were A-listers in abundance, viewers couldn't help but notice the absence of a couple of the show's most beloved alumni, including Bill Hader, who was an SNL cast member from 2005 to 2013. As even casual SNL viewers will know, Bill is behind some of the show's most iconic sketches, and so, fans were incredibly disappointed to see that he was one of the only former cast members not to make a comeback for the 50th anniversary. 'Ok not gonna lie, it feels wrong watching the SNL 50th anniversary without Bill Hader,' one X post read at the time. 'This show had everything. Except Bill Hader's Stefon,' added someone else, referring to his iconic recurring character on the show. 'Nah, how are you going to celebrate SNL 50 weekend update without Stefon. That's a crime. Where tf is Bill Hader,' echoed another user. Related: At the time, the intrigue surrounding Bill's absence was so widespread that his representative spoke out, telling Variety he was unable to make it due to a 'longstanding scheduling conflict.' And now, Bill has addressed the matter himself, revealing that his lack of involvement was down to something a little more personal. Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday, Bill explained to his fellow SNL alum that he was invited to take part in a short with Andy Samberg, but turned it down due to his struggles with anxiety — which was ironic, because the sketch was all about how 'everyone that ever worked at SNL had anxiety.' Related: 'Andy called me and was like, 'Hey, so we're doing this short about how, you know, everybody had anxiety.' And when he told me that, I was like, 'I don't know if I want to do that,'' he recalled. 'And he was like, 'Why?' and I was like, 'Because I'm anxious!'' Andy's 'Anxiety' short went ahead anyway with Bowen Yang in Bill's place, and it seems he has no regrets about how things played out. 'I was like, really shaky and everything,' he told Seth. 'I was really anxious.' As you may know, Bill has talked openly in the past about his struggles with anxiety during his 8-year run on the show. 'The live aspect of SNL — I'm just not built for it,' he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022. 'Before shows, I would go into a bathroom that was way down this hall, go into a stall and have a full-blown panic attack, crying, the whole thing. And then I go and get in a giant banana costume.' He continued: 'This voice would come on in my head of like, 'You fucking asshole, do you know how many people would kill for this? Dude, get your shit together, come on.'' Are ‘Wednesday' Season 2 Rotten Tomatoes Reviews Woeful Or Wonderful?
Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega's Wednesday Season 2 is back on Netflix after nearly three years with Part 1. How are Rotten Tomatoes critics reacting to the first four episodes of the series? Wednesday Season 1, which premiered on Netflix in November of 2022, went on to become the most-watched series globally of all time on Netflix with 252.1 million views, equating to 1.718 billion hours viewed. Wednesday Season 1 earned a 73% 'fresh' rating based on 105 reviews, from Rotten Tomatoes critics, while audiences gave the series an 85% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score based on 5,000-plus verified user ratings. After the review embargo was lifted for Wednesday Season 2 on Wednesday at 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m., reviews started rolling in from RT critics and as of the publication of this article, the second season is getting a better reception than the first. So far, Wednesday Season 2 has earned an 85% 'fresh' rating on RT based on 41 reviews, while audiences have given it a 73% 'fresh' score on the site's Popcornmeter based on 50-plus verified user ratings. The RT Critics Consensus and Popcornmeter score for Wednesday Season 2 are still pending. What Are Individual Critics Saying About 'Wednesday' Season 2? Lorraine Ali of the Los Angeles Times is among the top critics on RT who gives Wednesday Season 2 a 'fresh' rating, writing in her review summary, 'It's really the performances, casting and artistic flourishes that make Wednesday a ghoulish delight.' Aramide Tinubu of Variety also loves Wednesday Season 2, writing on RT, 'Full of zing and depth, the season remains just as thrilling as the first.' Vicky Jessop of the London Evening Standard is also enthusiastic about Wednesday Season 2, writing in her 'fresh' RT review summary, 'Tim Burton's latest work is still deliciously twisted, and goes down like a spoonful of poisoned sugar. Something this addictive certainly isn't good for us, but we'll keep coming back for more.' Ed Power of the UK's Daily Telegraph also lauds Wednesday Season 2, writing on RT, 'A near three-year delay would have killed off a lesser show, but Wednesday's murderously enjoyable second season proves worth the wait.' She notes the creator of the characters her RT review summary, writing, 'Had Charles Addams not been cremated and scattered in his own pet cemetery in upstate New York (a decision weirder and more appealing than anything that happens in Wednesday) he would likely be turning in his grave.' Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter also gives Wednesday Season 2 a 'rotten' review on RT, writing, 'Re-contextualizing all of the Addams relatives into an exceptional world, in which what once made them creepy, kooky and altogether ooky is commonplace, drains them of any distinction at all.'
