Pandit Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, popularly known as Bageshwar Dham Baba, has once again found himself at the centre of a social media storm. This time, not for his spiritual discourses, but for his wardrobe, and his timing.
While currently touring Australia for a religious Katha (religious sermon), the young seer from Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur is being heavily trolled online after photos surfaced of him wearing stylish sunglasses and a pricey-looking jacket aboard a plane and even enjoying a cruise. Netizens were quick to point out the apparent disconnect; these images went viral just days after the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad that claimed over 274 lives.
Social media platforms were flooded with comments accusing the self-styled spiritual leader of insensitivity and flaunting a lifestyle far removed from his humble beginnings. Critics questioned how a man who once sat on a plastic chair drawing slips in a small tent now sports designer wear while globe-trotting. Some went further, insinuating a shift from saint to celebrity.
Faced with mounting criticism, Pandit Dhirendra Krishna Shastri broke his silence with a sharp rebuttal during an event in Fiji. In a veiled warning to his detractors, he said, 'The person who posted that video should listen carefully; if you have a problem with my jacket and glasses, let me tell you, they weren't bought, they were gifted by devotees."
He went on to justify accepting such offerings, stating that the Dakshina he receives during Katha programs is not for personal luxury but is spent on social welfare. 'We are building a cancer hospital, and we support poor girls with this money," he said, urging people not to spread 'worthless negativity".
This is not the first time Bageshwar Baba has drawn attention for reasons beyond religion. His rise to fame, marked by large gatherings, miracle claims, and political endorsements, has been equally praised and questioned.
