Two teenage soccer fans die after clashes between supporters, Chilean police ahead of Copa Libertadores tie
Two teenage soccer fans died following a confrontation with police ahead of Colo-Colo's Copa Libertadores match against Fortaleza on Thursday. The incident took place ahead of the game. Police general Alex Bahamondes told TVN police were responding to approximately 150 fans trying to enter Colo-Colo's Estadio Monumental in Santiago, Chile. Advertisement Colo-Colo confirmed in a statement that two of their fans had died while CONMEBOL, the organising body of the Copa Libertadores, said: 'We express our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones.' Bahamondes told TVN that the victims were an 18-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. 'Approximately 150 people entered (the stadium) with a sledgehammer and overflowed the fences surrounding the security perimeter,' Bahamondes said on the Chilean TV station. Bahamondes confirmed the vehicle involved in the incident was 'a police vehicle, which supposedly participated to maintain public order, but there is no certainty about whether that was the case.' Prosecutor Francisco Morales, via Chilean media outlet Emol, said that an investigation has commenced into whether a police car was involved in the deaths. 'At the moment, what is known is that one of the bars crushed these two youngsters with a greater weight, a force that could be attributable to different causes, and all of them are being investigated as possible working hypotheses to determine the final cause of these youngster's deaths,' Morales said. Morales said the 'preliminary information' indicated that the two individuals who died were part of a group 'of at least a hundred', who he claimed 'had attempted to break down the fences in an attempt to gain entry to the Monumental Stadium, and it is in this unclear context, for now, that the incident took place. 'We are working with all the technical resources available, including the cameras on site, to determine how the events unfolded.' Morales added that no arrests have been made although 'the person who was driving the car is currently a suspect', adding there was 'no reason to warrant his arrest at this time'. Despite the incidents ahead of the match, the game kicked off and proceeded normally until its suspension in the 72nd minute, when a group of Colo-Colo fans invaded the pitch amid the situation. Ignacio Bahamondes doesn't think Ilia Topuria should get UFC lightweight title shot
MEXICO CITY – Ignacio Bahamondes just put his name in the hat for a potential fight against former UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. Bahamondes (17-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC), a young, rising lightweight contender, doesn't think Topuria (15-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) should get the next shot at UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev for his first fight of his recent move up to 155 pounds. Bahamondes feels Topuria first needs to prove his worth, and he thinks he's the right dance partner for him. 'The truth is that he did great things at featherweight,' Bahamondes said in Spanish at a UFC Q&A. 'Maybe he was missing two more defenses so he could move up as champion and get himself a direct fight against the champion. 'I think that right now he needs to demonstrate he can do the same work he did at featherweight now at 155. I think he should get a top 15 or 10 because of his merit of being a champion, a weight class below. I would love to welcome him if that's something the company wants. I'm here.' It's uncertain the direction the UFC will go next with the lightweight title picture. Should the Topuria fight come to fruition or not, Bahamondes thinks in two years time he'll be challenging for UFC gold. This bold statement comes after Bahamondes entered the top-15 of the UFC lightweight division earlier this month with his quick submission win over Jalin Turner on the main card of UFC 313. 'I think for the top 10 I just need one or two more fights,' Bahamondes said. 'And to enter the top five, give me two years for me to be fighting for the title.' Bahamondes, 27, is on a three-fight winning streak and 6-1 in his past seven outings. His lone defeat came against veteran Ludovit Klein back in 2023. Bahamondes trains out of Valle Flow Striking alongside UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad.

Iganacio Bahamondes heartbroken to see Jalin Turner retire after UFC 313 loss
LAS VEGAS – Iganacio Bahamondes's biggest career win came with a bit of mix feelings. The rising lightweight contender was thrilled to get his hand raised Saturday on the main card of UFC 313 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, but was sad to see opponent Jalin Turner hang up his gloves at 29. Bahamondes (17-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) submitted Turner (14-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC) early in the first round of their bout, and almost immediately after Turner told Bahamondes he was done, just before then confirming the same with the media moments after. 'The truth is that it broke my heart because he told me that he was going to retire, that he was thinking about retiring because it no longer felt the same way, and he just didn't feel it in his heart to fight,' Bahamondes said at the UFC 313 post-fight press conference. 'I told him not to do it. I told him to go back home and think about it well and check on his motivations, but to not retire. I also invited him to our gym. He can come and train whenever he wants, and we'll help him.' Although sad for Turner, Bahamondes completed his objective at UFC 313 – which was to get a statement win over his first ranked opponent. On that end, the Chilean fighter is over the moon, but he assures that he's just getting started. 'I'm living my best life right now, and it's like a dream come true – and we're not even half of my dream,' Bahamondes said. 'We're just at the top of the iceberg. I have a lot more to do and I want the belt. I want the belt. I want to be the best Chilean fighter, and with the belt. I'm already the best Chilean fighter right now. I'm the first one to be in the top 15. I'm here to break records and to win the belt.' For more on the card, visit MMA Junkie's event hub for UFC 313.
