The Suave Cocktail Bar Companion to Melrose Hill's Corridor 109 Is Open

is the Lead Editor of the Southern California/Southwest region, and has covered dining, restaurants, food culture, and nightlife in Los Angeles since 2008. Ask Brian Baik what he would've opened in 2020 — when he relocated from New York City to his hometown of Los Angeles — what his first-ever restaurant would have been, and he probably wouldn't have answered with a bar. But on July 29, Baik will debut Bar 109 with bartender Kayla Garcia overseeing the drinks and general manager Jon Tran. The bar will open in the front portion of his forthcoming tasting menu restaurant, Corridor 109, which has been in development for years. Garcia was most recently at Kumiko, which just won the 2025 James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar and is currently number 10 in the North America 50 Best Bars. Kumiko is known for blending elements of a classic Japanese whisky bar with a beverage omakase. Garcia was also at Thunderbolt's Hollywood offshoot Night on Earth before landing at Bar 109. Ichigo Punch at Bar 109. Oolong Boulevardier at Bar 109. At Bar 109, Garcia will serve updated versions of classic cocktails, like the gently salted Marine Layer, a type of martini mixing gin, Manzanilla sherry, dry vermouth, saline, and white kelp. The Ichigo Punch blends summer ingredients of strawberry and basil with vodka, mezcal, clarified milk, and junmai sake. A Korean-inflected Chic Hey (named after sikhae) employs malted barley, fermented rice, and non-alcoholic kombucha for a spirit-free sipper. While at Kumiko, Garcia earned a sake sommelier certification, and she compiled a standalone sake menu alongside the greater wine list, which was curated by master sommelier Michael Englemann. As for food, Baik will serve a bar bites menu for probably the first time in his career, which has mostly occupied the world of New York City fine dining. Start with a smoked salmon dip with Ritz crackers and then ogle the massive shrimp cocktail using some of the largest shrimp (U-10, meaning under 10 shrimp per pound) on the market. A fried fish sandwich inspired by Japanese nanbankan comes with hefty tartar sauce and pickles between potato buns. A wagyu hot dog heavy on Dijon mustard comes with pickled pepper relish. For Bar 109, Montalba Architects designed a sleek, mostly black-painted space anchored by the striking Forest Gold marble countertop with tendrils of rusty brown running across its surface, an element that Baik said he went 'all out' on in terms of cost. Three elliptical tables allow for groups to congregate and potentially take in some pre- or post-dinner drinks once Corridor 109 opens. But unlike the likely pricey dinner that will await those folks, Bar 109 won't take reservations and is intended to be a casual neighborhood hangout open until midnight. Debuting on July 29, Bar 109 will be open Tuesday to Saturday, 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., and is located at 641 N. Western Avenue, Los Angeles, CA, 90004. Food and drinks at Bar 109. Marine Layer cocktail. Coconut Swizzle, a non-alcoholic cocktail at Bar 109. Kayla Garcia, Brian Baik, and Jon Tran at Bar 109 in Los Angeles.

He dismissed opposition claims that the government has failed to bring development, citing education aid schemes such as Budi, Bakti, Baik, GRS-Subfly, and Sentosa among 13 initiatives supporting students from B40 families. Among other efforts, Hajiji highlighted the construction of 3,000 Rumah Mesra SMJ units across all constituencies, the new Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat (Syukur) cash aid programme, and major water, electricity, and infrastructure projects underway across the state. He said four out of 16 Pan Borneo Highway Phase 1A packages have been completed, alongside key projects in Sook, including tarred roads, new schools, upgraded health clinics, and housing assistance benefiting hundreds of residents. Hajiji stressed that more developments are planned for Sook, including a sports complex, a new hospital, a district police station, and expanded health facilities, reaffirming the government's commitment to advancing Sabah's equitable progress. He made these remarks during the launch ceremony for Sook's upgrade to full district status on Monday. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? LG weighs response to Trump's proposed TV tariffs

LG Electronics is grappling with anticipated tariffs from the administration of US President Donald Trump on imported televisions. However, building a new manufacturing facility in the US immediately would be challenging due to logistical hurdles, an official said Tuesday. Baik Sun-pil, the LG Electronics vice president leading the company's TV product planning division, made the remarks as the company unveiled its 2025 lineup of organic light-emitting diode and quantum nanocell-emitting diode TVs at a press briefing at LG Science Park in Seoul. 'Currently, no TV manufacturers have production facilities in the US. Due to free trade policies, most TV production is concentrated in Mexico, Southeast Asia and China,' Baik told reporters, emphasizing that tariffs are not just LG's problem alone. 'That being said, building a TV factory in the US right now isn't easy,' he added. 'In order to produce a TV, components such as panels and system-on-chips must be sourced along with other materials, and setting up the necessary infrastructure in the US immediately is extremely challenging.' As a result, LG is closely monitoring the tariff situation rather than making any abrupt decisions on a new plant decision or relocating production. One option is shifting production to countries where tariffs are likely to be lower, incorporating LG's existing manufacturing infrastructure. However, Baik acknowledged that providing further details on specific production strategies would be difficult at this time. LG currently operates a TV manufacturing plant in Reynosa, Mexico, serving the North American market. If Trump goes ahead with his plan to impose 25 percent tariffs on imports from Mexico — execution of which has been delayed until April 2 — it would make TVs from Mexico pricier, impacting LG's profit. At the briefing, Baik also addressed the rapid growth of Chinese TV manufacturers in the premium market, which poses a concern for Korean electronics giants like LG and Samsung Electronics. But Baik asserted that the Chinese manufacturers still lag behind in core technological capabilities. 'While Chinese companies gained dominance in (hardware like) panels, they currently lack independent technology in SOCs and operating systems,' said Baik, noting Chinese companies rely on Korean and American OS solutions. LG on Tuesday unveiled its latest OLED and QNED televisions, featuring upgraded artificial intelligence and display technology. LG is pursuing a "dual-track" strategy of focusing on both OLED and QNED TVs to secure leadership in the premium TV market. It has maintained the top spot in OLED TVs for 12 consecutive years, according to market research firm Omdia, accounting for 52.4 percent of global OLED TV shipments last year.
