'We in the Hoodoo Gurus are utterly devastated at the sudden loss of our dear friend, Mick (Dominic) Mazzone,' they wrote in a statement. 'It is impossible to convey the shock and grief we are feeling right now. We have already shed many tears, and there will be many more to come. 'Our loss is nothing compared to the one that has been dealt to Mick's close family and friends and, in particular, to his beloved kids, Frank, Antonia and Alex.

New film Hegoledh explores Cornwall's past and present

A new short film shot partly in the Cornish language aims to capture the conflict between traditional industries and the tourism film, Hegoledh, which is Cornish for "Superstition", bought some winter excitement to the hamlet of Durgan on the Helford story tells of the mysterious disappearance of all the fish from the river and the search for an explanation - as well as a is the latest film to explore the impact of "newcomers" to remote seaside communities, following in the footsteps of Mark Jenkin's Bafta-winning film Bait. Durgan is an ideal setting to explore the uneasy relationship between Cornwall's past and tiny hamlet - featuring pretty granite buildings and stunning views - used to be dominated by fishing families, nets and seven of the 15 houses are owned and rented out by the National Trust, including the old school actor Michael Fenner plays the part of a fisherman who is fighting to preserve a way of life left behind by the modern said: "It's gently political but the audience won't get it shoved down their throat."I guess I represent the old way of life and the tourist that I meet... gets the blame for everything, including the fact there's no fish left." Director Guy Potter has previously had success with a film shot entirely in the Cornish language called Trengellick this latest work, both Cornish and English are used, and he plays a young visitor who is blamed for the disappearance of the said: "We're just trying to bring back a little bit more understanding of what life's really like for people outside of the holiday madness."Hegoledh tackles the universal theme of xenophobia, of not being welcome somewhere, and the suspicions around someone who's 'not from round here'."It's a universal theme for a universal film, that's more fable than fiction."Whilst it's designed to be intrinsically Cornish, it's also designed to be familiar the world over." The film is being shot on 16mm Kodak colour film with vintage equipment. It is a deliberate choice to give the finished piece a blue, wintry said: "It really helps us connect with the grain and the tactile nature with the salt and the spray and granite."The film is expected to be released in May and is due to tour Cornish cinemas and international film festivals.

MiMedia to be Integrated onto Millions of Smartphones with Walmart Subsidiary "Bait", the Fastest Growing and Third Largest Telecom Carrier in Mexico with 18.3M+ Subscribers Partnership to Include Collaboration and Integration with Walmart's Prolific Digital Ecosystem of Mobile Apps Targeting Entire Latin America Continent New York, New York--(Newsfile Corp. - March 17, 2025) - MiMedia Holdings Ltd. (TSXV: MIM) (OTCQB: MIMDF) (FSE: KH3) ("MiMedia", "Company") is thrilled to announce the signing of a major strategic partnership with Walmart Latin America, a significant milestone for the Company. Chris Giordano, MiMedia CEO, noted: "Partnering with Walmart, the #1 company on the Fortune 500, and their largest international subsidiary in Latin America, is a major validator of the MiMedia value proposition, the size of our market opportunity, and the strength and quality of our technology platform. We are very excited to add such a high caliber partner to our strong and growing list of powerful players in the global Telecom and smartphone industries. We believe this agreement is just the start of what our two companies can do together in the future." Walmart Latin America is one of the largest retailers in Latin America with USD $48 billion+ in annual revenue (1) and 4K+ stores (1) in Mexico and Central America alone (not including other strongholds in region such as Chile). Walmart Latin America has also become a major purveyor of smartphones and telecom services via their Mexican subsidiary, known as Bait. Bait has quickly become the third largest provider of telecom services in Mexico in only five years since launch, growing to 18.3 million subscribers as of December 31st, 2024 (1). This spectacular growth has occurred within the 3K+ Walmart stores in Mexico (1), as shoppers purchase smartphones in store and sign-up for Bait's nationwide telecom service at point of sale. At this pace of growth, Bait could eclipse AT&T Mexico and become the second largest telecom provider in the country in 2025. As part of this partnership, MiMedia will be integrated on millions of new, Bait-procured smartphones to be sold to consumers in Mexico. Importantly, the MiMedia mobile app will also be pushed out as a download over the air ("OTA") update up to the existing 18.3 million of Android smartphones already in Bait consumer hands. Additionally, a concerted marketing effort will occur, both online and in stores, to induce millions of Walmart consumers to make the MiMedia and Bait cloud platform part of their daily lives. As a key component of the partnership, MiMedia will also collaborate with and integrate into the Walmart digital ecosystem of apps that serves the entire Latin America. Walmart's ecosystem consists of some of the continent's most used apps, including "Cashi" for digital payments (reported 5 million+ users) and "Salud" for healthcare (reported 2.5 million+ memberships (1)) among others. The connection of the MiMedia/Bait consumer cloud platform within the Walmart mobile app ecosystem can drive significant user engagement to the MiMedia platform and generate immediate revenue and cash flow. Walmart reported 46 million contactable customers in its "Digital Connection" database as of Q4 2024 (1), a massive number of users to be targeted for program participation. Mr. Giordano added, "Partnering with Walmart Latin America provides MiMedia with a reliable, rapidly growing pipeline of smartphones, which will be integrated with our platform as the devices' native media gallery. These devices will provide a constant pipeline of high margin, recurring revenue for both MiMedia and Walmart. We cannot wait to have Walmart's expansive consumer base enjoying all the incredible technologies offered within our platform and to become MiMedia and Walmart ecosystem users for years to come." On my radar: Georgia Ellery's cultural highlights

Born in Cornwall in 1997, Georgia Ellery attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. There she met Taylor Skye, with whom she founded the electro-pop duo Jockstrap; their 2022 debut album, I Love You Jennifer B, was nominated for the Mercury prize. In 2019 she starred in the Mark Jenkin film Bait. She is also a member of the Mercury-nominated Black Country, New Road, who have so far released two albums blending post-rock, klezmer and jazz. Their third album, Forever Howlong, is out on 4 April on Ninja Tune; they tour in the autumn. Ellery lives in London. ContraPoints ContraPoints is the alias of Natalie Wynn, an amazing US YouTuber, cultural critic and performer who makes video essays on a large range of topics, such as politics, gender, ethics, race and philosophy. The videos are really informative and well made. She spends months making them: they're long and very camp. The first time I was recommended her channel, I watched three videos in a row. There's a good one about shame, and sometimes she'll use a topic such as Twilight as the vessel, but it's more about tropes in literature, BDSM and power dichotomies between men and women. Munch, Oslo, Norway Some people can stand in front of a painting and it makes them cry. I don't feel like that, but when I went to the Munch museum, I didn't cry but I was inspired. The way he depicts anxiety, in The Scream and in many of his other paintings, really hits the mark. There seemed to be lots of variations on the same subject, from different angles or perspectives, or repurposing it on to lithographs and woodcuts. I particularly liked his painting Two Women on the Shore – it looked very Bergmanesque, like The Seventh Seal. Life of Bi I've been listening to this podcast for a couple of years now. It explores bisexuality, covering a wide range of issues, such as faith and bisexuality, or marriage and queerness. It's made by Mary Higgins and Ell Potter, who also write plays, and I feel as if I'm their friend at this point, as you do with podcasts. It's a fantastic resource for anyone struggling with their bisexuality, and it's also very entertaining. I'd recommend episode seven, F*ck the Pie, which is about the 'mother of bisexuality' Lani Ka'ahumanu, who introduced the B into LGBTQ+. It gets quite moving. Madonna: A Rebel Life by Mary Gabriel This is very well written. It goes into plenty of detail about Madonna's activism during the Aids crisis, with pamphlets about safe sex at her shows, as well as how she moves through the music industry. At the start of her career she signed to a label and was taken to Paris, where she was wined and dined, but the producers weren't allowing her to hone her craft. So she got on a plane and never went back. She was like, 'I'd rather be poor and be able to make the art that I need to make.' She's such an icon. Sauna culture I love going to saunas wherever I am on tour. I'm into the different ways people sauna: in Scandinavian culture, where you jump into cold water afterwards; Turkish baths and hammams, with different generations cleaning one another; Russian sauna culture, with the whipping of the parenie and all the rituals that go with it. Going to onsens in Japan was super cool: you have your little wash stations, with this multi-tool shower head, and a bit where you spray between your teeth. Afterwards you feel amazing – relaxed, like a newborn. There's no better feeling. Michaela Coel Michaela Coel's last TV series, I May Destroy You, blew me away. It's my favourite series: she stars in it and wrote it, and I'm so in awe of her as a person. The soundtrack was great, the acting was epic, and I love her style of comedy. So I'm very excited to see her next series, First Day on Earth, which starts filming this year. She'll star in it again, and it's about a novelist who's offered a job in Ghana, where her estranged father lives. I think it'll be amazing.

First look: Bait El Lowal revives Sharjah's trading past with flavours from the Silk Road

The scent of cardamom and saffron drifts from the kitchen of Sharjah's Bait El Lowal, echoing the UAE's past as a vital node along the Silk Road. Overlooking the Sharjah Creek and the vast Arabian Gulf, the new restaurant gazes upon the storied paths once travelled by traders from India, Persia and North Africa – their dhows laden with black pepper, turmeric, local fish and dates – some of the ingredients defining what is now known as Emirati cuisine. Opening to the public on Thursday and the brainchild of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Bait El Lowal reflects this heritage through its detailed architecture and a meticulously crafted menu inspired by the raw, fresh goods once carried in ancient cargoes. Sheikha Bodour notes that the name itself is a nod to the past travellers who found shelter – and, in some cases, a new life – upon stepping onto the shores of Sharjah. 'The name itself reflects this journey. 'Bait' means home, while 'El Lowal' is an old Emirati term for the traveller who returns, not just with goods, but with knowledge, experiences and discoveries,' she tells The National. 'For centuries, Sharjah welcomed traders and explorers from India, Persia, Morocco and beyond. Their ships docked along its shores, carrying silks, spices, and traditions that blended seamlessly with our own. 'I wanted Bait El Lowal to reflect that sense of homecoming, a place that embraces visitors as if they were returning from a long voyage, where every dish, craft and space carries echoes of the journeys that have shaped us.' Nestled in the heart of Sharjah and located off Corniche Road, Bait El Lowal sits in one of the emirate's typically culturally rich coastal neighbourhoods. It is home to the Sharjah Art Foundation, the picturesque Urban Garden, and the stunning Masjid Al Zahra, a mosque that features bright decorative tile work that is heavily influenced by Iranian-Persian design. The facade of the two-storey structure, once a century-old residence known as Bait Al Mazrou, is restored and designed to reflect traditional Emirati architecture. Its coral stone walls and carved wooden doors are materials historically chosen to insulate residents from the intense desert heat. 'Restoring Bait El Lowal was about more than preserving a building; it was about safeguarding the stories and traditions embedded in its walls,' Sheikha Bodour says. 'The house, originally home to the Al Mazrouei family, had stood for over 100 years, witnessing the movement of travellers, merchants and generations of Emirati life. The priority was to retain its character while carefully integrating elements that allow it to serve as a welcoming space for modern visitors.' Once inside, guests are transported to a stately Moroccan riad with a fountain at the centre of a tranquil central courtyard. The sunlight glimmers off the colourful Zellige tiles, casting shadows on creamy walls with Moorish horseshoe arches. The seats lining the courtyard are a mix of woven rattan chairs and cushioned benches adorned with colourful throw pillows. Inside, surrounding the courtyard, are several plush majlises featuring luxurious couches and artisanal rugs perfect for group tea sessions. Also on the ground floor is Al Kutubkhana, an on-site bookstore featuring a selection of art and history books on the region's cultural heritage, along with English translations of novels and non-fiction works by Sharjah's ruler Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi that explore the emirate's past. There's also Soghat El Lowal, an arts and crafts boutique, that showcases works by local and regional artisans that embrace sustainable practices. These include Emirati hand-embroidered mkhaweer dresses, silk scarves from Uzbekistan, jewellery from India, and traditional shoes and homeware from Morocco's Amazigh culture. Al Marmas, the rooftop terrace, is stunning – featuring elegant archways and a majestic view of the Sharjah Creek. Bait El Lowal's menu is a meeting point of cultures, with each section evoking a journey across the region. Breakfast dishes are titled The Silk Road Awakens, while appetizers are dubbed Teasers – A Prelude to the Voyage. Main courses fall under Coming Back – The Journey Returns and desserts are presented as A Sweet Journey Through the Silk Road. With more than 30 dishes on offer, priced between Dh25 and Dh190, the menu focuses less on fusion and more on highlighting the culinary connections forged through historical trade routes. An example is the roasted eggplant with red miso and feta cheese – an impactful eggplant salad that showcases some of the ancient fermentation techniques traders used to preserve ingredients on months-long journeys. The smoked salmon and ossetra caviar tartlet, an elegant pastry appetiser, takes its cues from the historic Caspian Sea Trade – a key feature of the Silk Road. It reflects how delicacies such as caviar and fish roe were transported from places like Persia throughout the region. The meat dishes, such as the braised lamb shank and striploin, are infused with Silk Road spices like sumac, ginger and cloves. Meanwhile, contemporary influences emerge in the quinoa-crusted octopus and chicken liver parfait. The octopus is gently braised, then coated in crisped quinoa for added texture, while the sweetness of apple and the richness of the parfait create a balanced, smooth finish. A dessert dish that could prove popular is Hidden Treasure – a decadent Guanaja chocolate whipped ganache with crunchy cocoa nibs, sitting atop a crispy date cake and a puddle of fragrant cardamom soup. 'We wanted to celebrate this history by creating a menu that captures the essence of those exchanges,' Sheikha Bodour says. 'Every dish is designed to reflect the natural evolution of flavours that have travelled across continents yet feel at home in Emirati kitchens. Some dishes pay homage to time-honoured recipes, while others reimagine these influences in new ways.' Bait El Lowal is located on Al Marija Street, Sharjah; open daily from 8am to 11pm; for reservations go to
