DA: Man found guilty of murdering father, assaulting mother
A man faces multiple life sentences when he is to be sentenced July 15 for murdering his father and assaulting his mother, who he tried to get to help cover up the crimes, according to the Kern County District Attorney's Office. Edward James Pull on Friday was found by a jury to be guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his father, Edward William Pull. He was also convicted of several crimes against his mother, including assault with an AR-15 style rifle causing great bodily injury, false imprisonment, elder abuse and being a felon in possession of a firearm, the DA's office reported. Firearm and great bodily injury enhancements were also found to be true. The judge found true several aggravating factors, including the defendant's three prior 2006 felony convictions for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, a DA's office news release said. Bakersfield Police Department officers who were sent Dec. 11, 2017 to investigate a robbery found two victims bleeding. The defendant told police a robber had shot his father and beat his mother, but later, when she was safe, the mother said there was no robber and her son was the perpetrator, according to prosecutors. Surveillance video confirmed that, a DA's office news release said, showing the defendant came out of his bedroom wearing a mask and gloves and carrying a loaded AR-15 style MR Carbine firearm. The defendant pointed the gun at his father and yelled; the mother came to see what was happening and then was beaten on her head with the rifle, causing an eight-inch gash on the top her head, as well as other head lacerations and bruising all over her body, according to the DA's office. When Edward William Pull tried to help his wife, the defendant assaulted him with the firearm and then shot his father twice, once in the abdomen and once in the left leg, prosecutors said. The defendant waited four hours to call for help, forcing his mother to help clean up the crime scene, hide and destroy evidence, the news release said. While Edward William Pull underwent several operations to attempt to save his life, he died from his injuries a week later. 'This was a heinous and calculated act, one that the victims' never saw coming. Not only did the defendant take the life of his own father, but he also attempted to cover it up and force his mother into being his accomplice," Assistant District Attorney Joseph Kinzel said in the news release. "Yet despite his efforts to evade accountability, justice prevailed in the end.'

Fleeing suspect released pitbull from kennel during foot pursuit in south Bakersfield: police
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield police came to a home in the 3300 block of Margalo Court 8:35 p.m. Tuesday night for reports of someone violating a restraining order. Officers say they made contact with the suspect identified as 26-year-old Marion Delouth III, in front of the home, but he fled into the backyard and released a large pitbull from its kennel. Fearing for their safety, an officer shot the dog after they say it aggressively charged at them. The dog was wrapped in a white bed sheet and put in the back of pickup. Delouth was arrested and booked on charges of assaulting an officer. No one else was hurt. 4 people hospitalized after truck collides with school bus near Shafter Sergeant Eric Celedon with Bakersfield Police Department released a statement to 17 News saying, 'For clarification, discharging a firearm by an officer at a dog is not considered an 'officer-involved-shooting', as defined by law.' 17 News went to the home to speak with the dog owner who was still in tears from the incident. She told 17 News his name is Mojo, a three-year-old American Bulldog she got for her boys while they were still playing football. The boys moved out, and Mojo became her baby. The dog owners have demanded answers from police to know why a taser or mace wasn't used instead of a gun. Mojo's owners declined to go on camera because they said it won't change anything. At last report, Mojo was transported to a veterinarian hospital where he's undergoing treatment for his injuries. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Bakersfield police provide safety tips for National Bicycle Safety Month
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield Police Department encouraged the community to be alert and keep bicyclists safe in honor of National Bicycle Safety Month. The department said they have been conducting traffic safety operations focused on driver behaviors that put bicyclists and pedestrians in danger. These behaviors include speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield right of way and running a stop light or sign. The BPD Traffic Division suggests these safety tips for the public to follow: Slow down and follow the speed limit. Be careful traveling through intersections. Look carefully for bicyclists and pedestrians before making a turn or opening a car door near streets or bike paths. Be patient when traveling behind a bicyclist and give them space when passing. California law requires drivers to change lanes, when possible, to pass bicyclists and always pass with at least 3 feet of space. Never drive distracted or impaired. Use lights at night. Although not required for riders 18 and older, always wear a properly secured helmet. Helmets significantly reduce the chance of a head injury in the event of a crash. Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow moving vehicle. Yield to pedestrians, just as a driver would. Pedestrians have the right-of-way within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
