Ranchi: The markets across the city are gleaming with colour and devotion as preparations intensify for Shri Krishna Janmashtami. Puja shops are filled with items dedicated to Bal Gopal's decoration, from idols in various divine forms to tiny beds, cradles, flutes, and crowns.
Popular markets such as Upper Bazaar, Doranda, and Harmu are witnessing brisk sales, with most items sourced from Vrindavan, Delhi, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. The market is adorned with Radha-Krishna idols, silver and wooden swings, colourful clothes, cosmetics, coolers, and decorative fans.
The wooden swings are available from Rs 300 to Rs 3,000, while the clothes are available from Rs 50 to Rs 500. The 56-bhog thalis, a special offering of 56 different food items to Lord Krishna, are a popular item, with some being specially imported from Banaras.
Amit Kumar, a shopkeeper in Upper Bazaar, said, "This year we hope the new decorative items will become the star attraction. Devotees are loving these unique additions for their Bal Gopal decorations."
Meanwhile, the Shri Krishna Janmotsav Samiti formally began preparations for the grand two-day festival with a Bhoomi Pujan ceremony at Albert Ekka Chowk, Main Road, where the main celebrations will be held on August 16 and 17.

The committee installed a decorated dahi handi at the venue, adorned with the colours of the national flag and garlands of fresh flowers. LED lighting has also been arranged to illuminate the handi at night, and it will remain on display until August 16.
Committee president Mukesh Kabra stated, "This year marks the 15th edition of our Janmashtami celebrations. On the first day, we will host a Bal Gopal tableau competition where children can participate in portraying various forms of Shri Krishna. On the second day, we will have the men's and women's dahi handi competition."
