Interview: Amar Upadhyay Tells NDTV He Knew Mihir Was Dying In Kyunki, But The Hysteria...
New Delhi: Today is the day, Ekta Kapoor's most loved daily soap from 2000, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, returns with its reboot version. What's even better is that one of television's most iconic couples, Tulsi Virani (Smriti Irani) and Mihir Virani (Amar Upadhyay), are reprising their onscreen avatars. One of the most chaotic phases of the long-running television show was when Mihir's character was killed. It was the outcome of a tragic accident, and it led to a massive twist in the storyline, along with Tulsi's life turning upside down. More importantly, Mihir's affair with Mandira (Mandira Bedi) was also revealed soon after. In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, Amar Upadhyay reveals if his onscreen death was planned or if he was brought back because of public demand and the huge outcry that was unleashed. What's Happening Amar Upadhyay, who played the role of Mihir in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, addresses one of the most talked-about scenes in the show. His death scene had left Balaji Telefilms' email server crashing and phone lines being jammed. After a point, the production house decided to bring back Mihir's character, to the utmost respite of his dedicated fans. Amar Upadhyay reveals, "The story was planned. I was told beforehand that I was going to die in the 125th episode, and they killed me in the 127th. It was all planned on paper, but the hysteria was unexpected. He was the hero who was supposed to die; it was a major incident. It was not expected." He continues, "Logically, any show would just shut down. Very subtly, the scenes were written, we shot them, but the reaction was off the charts. They wrote the scenes, and they shot the scenes. We were just staying honest to the script, but yes, we made it big because Mihir was dying! The crazy love and reaction from fans was, I guess, just a validation of how much love Mihir received throughout." What Made Mihir And Tulsi An Ideal Couple In the same conversation, Amar Upadhyay recalled his camaraderie with Smriti Irani, who became a household name as Tulsi Virani. He says even though she is a huge politician, the atmosphere on set this time was as happy as it has always been. He could only see his co-star. He says, "Tulsi is a very strong personality on television. Today she's a very big politician. She's handled so many ministries. But I never feel she's such a big politician. I always felt that she was my co-star. And when we met on set this time, I think we met as co-stars more than anything else. So it feels the same." Recalling how they would always be giggling on set even back then, the Kyunki actor says, "We were so comfortable as actors and friends on sets together. We used to laugh a lot while the cameras weren't rolling. You can see some clippings on social media today where we are both seen laughing, but that's happening when we are not shooting any scene. That's the reason why we came across as the believable, perfect couple on screen." In A Nutshell Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 returns tonight at 10:30 PM on Star Plus. It will be streaming on JioHotstar at all times. Mihir AKA Amar Upadhyay spoke about the frenzy that took place when his onscreen character was killed. Mihir was brought back on the show due to popular demand, and fans were relieved.

Smriti Irani reveals she showed hospital reports to prove her miscarriage to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi makers, was fired from a talk show on day of delivery
Smriti Irani has often talked about how she and producer Ekta Kapoor addressed several women's issues with their seminal television show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi back in the 2000s. With TV being a female actor-led medium, Smriti was even paid better than her male co-stars after the historic success of her daily soap. But being a woman came with its own cost for Smriti. 'My son was three days old when I came back to the set of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Why? Because everyone wanted to watch a new episode daily at 10:30 pm,' recalled Smriti, who revealed she continued to work on the show even post a miscarriage. While late producer Ravi Chopra allowed Smriti Irani to take a week off, the actor said Ekta Kapoor couldn't afford that because her show aired every day. Smriti said on Raj Shamani's podcast, 'Somebody in the production went and told Ekta, 'We're ready to shoot. But Smriti Irani isn't available. She is lying. Nothing has actually happened to her.' So I had to go back with my hospital reports to prove it actually happened.' She recalled another instance of being discriminated against back then. 'I was working with somebody till the last day of the ninth month (of pregnancy). It was a daily talk show, Kuch Dil Se. I was told to record a bank of worth 30 days and come back to work after 30 days,' recalled Smriti. She continued to shoot for both the talk show and the daily soap simultaneously because she'd just bought a house and wanted to repay the EMI quickly, despite being warned against working endlessly during her pregnancy by her family and doctors. 'I'm in the hospital after giving birth to my baby, and I get a wire: 'You're fired.' And I'd just shot (for the talk show) a day before. They were just waiting for me to get into the hospital to tell me I'm fired. They'd already made a bank so they could replace me. Their intention was to use my hard work in favour of my replacement,' said Smriti. However, Smriti Irani revealed her response was to just smile because she had faith that the unfair move by the talk show's makers would come back to bite them. 'They hired a film actor for it. Their exhibit was much bigger, they were a bigger name. And the show shut down. It never started again,' said Smriti. She'll be next seen reprising her iconic role of Tulsi Virani in Balaji Telefilms' reboot of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which will air on StarPlus and JioHotstar starting July 29.

Aamir Khan hired my security agency employees for his personal security, says Ronit Roy: ‘Dahej mein le gaye voh'
Ronit Roy gained popularity in the early 2000s when his characters in various Balaji Telefilms' shows became houshold names but, before Ronit made it big, he went through a rough patch where his movie career had tanked, and he was struggling. During this time, Ronit started his security agency and trained his first batch of employees himself. In a recent interview, Ronit shared that the 12 people who were his first employees have their own teams now. He shared that he has been successfully running his business for many years now but during the pandemic, when many stars stopped using his services, only three stars continued to pay despite the circumstances – Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Karan Johar. In a chat with Hindi Rush, Ronit shared that he got his first training from a team that was visiting from Israel, and the second round of training happened with his employees with a team from South Africa. He shared that he would be on the field with his first team of 12 people, who were eventually poached by some film celebrities. When asked if he still works with the original team, he said, 'Jin stars ke sath the unhi ke sath hain, par maine dahej mein de diye unko, ya dahej mein le gaye voh (They are still working with the same celebrities. I gave them as a gift, or they took them away)'. Ronit also provided security for Aamir Khan when he recieved some threats in the late 1990s, and shared that those same set of people continue to protect Aamir, even though they don't work with him anymore. 'Uski saare abhi jo ladke hain, sab ke sab mere hain (All the people in his team, they were my employees before.)' Following this, there was a significant decrease in the money that came into the company. But, Ronit shared that Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar continued to pay through the pandemic even though they were not obligated to do so. 'Almost immediately, everyone stopped their services. There were only three people who did not discontinue the services. They said 'it's okay, we will continue to pay' – Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar. They paid throughout Covid,' he shared as he recalled that he had a long list of employees at the time. 'No one knew about Covid so it wasnt anyone's fault. Those who decided to wait for the pandemic to get over, they were also not wrong because these were unpredictable times. I am so grateful to the three of them . They took care of 30-35 percent of my workforce, the rest, we managed,' he shared.
