Farmers get shoulder-to-shoulder for Men's Health Week

A variety of events will be be held next week for Men's Health Week in coordination with the 'Taking Stock' campaign designed to reach farmers. The free events in counties Mayo, Galway, and Roscommon will have a range of information stands, free health and wellbeing checks, and consultations. Everyone is welcome to attend the following health fairs: Balla Mart, Co. Mayo: June 7, 10:00a.m.-2:00p.m; Ballina Mart, Co. Mayo; June 10, 10:00a.m.-2:00p.m; Roscommon Mart, Co. Roscommon: June 13, 10:30a.m.-1:30p.m; Maam Cross Mart, Co. Galway: June 14, 08:30a.m.-12:30p.m; This year's theme is 'Shoulder-to-Shoulder: Connecting for Health', highlighting the importance of community and connection in supporting men's wellbeing. From Saturday, June 7, to Sunday, June 15, across the three counties, a diverse programme of events will offer men of all ages the chance to engage, learn and to take proactive steps towards better health. Health Service Executive (HSE) regional project lead for Men's Health Week, Laurence Gaughan, said; 'Men's Health Week provides an important opportunity to raise awareness of preventable health problems, support men and boys to live healthier lives and encourage them to seek help or treatment at an early stage'. Men's mental help initiatives Croí Hearth and Stroke Charity carried out an initiative last year, screening approximately 1,200 men, and found that a significant number of them had medical issues such as high blood pressure. Gaughan said: 'Based on this previous research, this is a critical need.' He added that the aim of this health week is to 'bring the message of men's mental health to them (farmers), not to have them wait to get information.' A free online seminar on Wednesday, June 11 at 07.00p.m. will talk about men's mental health. Anyone wishing to sign up can scan the QR code in the poster below. The programme is also carrying out a free online retirement webinar which will be held at Portershed, Market St, Galway city at 7.00p.m Thursday, June 12. To sign up, scan the QR code below. The 'Taking stock' initiative began last March with the goal of educating farmers about mental health, succession, financial planning, and cardiovascular diseases. There is now a joint effort by the HSE, Croí, Healthy Galway, Healthy Mayo, Healthy Roscommon, and the local marts to prioritise men's – in particular farmers' – health.

Factory quotes hold as supply drops and mart prices rising

This week's factory quotes for beef cattle have seen the opening price offers start at similar levels to last week, despite supplies of factory-fit cattle dropping off and prices paid for forward store cattle at marts on the rise. Mart managers are unanimous in admitting prices paid for store and beef cattle are increasing at mart sales over recent days, with up to €3,510 or €4.68/kg paid for a 750kg Charolais bullock at Carnaross Mart, Co. Meath today (Monday, May 12). There are 500 calves and 300 bullocks on offer in the sale. In Balla Mart, Co. Mayo, on Saturday, May 10, a 755kg Angus bullock made €3,560 or €4.72/kg and another 575kg Limousin bullock sold for €2,970 or €5.17/kg. In Gortatlea Mart, Co. Kerry, on Friday, May 9, 14 Angus bullocks with an average weight of 597kg sold for €2,930 or €4.90/kg. In Dowra Mart, Co. Cavan, on Saturday, May 10, a 1,045kg Limousin dry cow sold for €4,700 or €4.49/kg. Factory quotes: Heifers and steers This week, factories are starting negotiations at €7.50/kg in general for steers (bullocks), with some outlets opening offers at the lower rate of €7.40/kg on the grid. Most factories are only killing cattle four days this week and several procurement staff were unsure if there would even be sufficient cattle available to fill out the kill sheets for these four days. Heifers are being quoted at €7.55-7.60/kg on the grid in general this week, with some outlets starting the week at the lower rate of €7.50/kg. Procurement staff are talking down the level of demand for beef and saying they will be reluctant to pay above their price offers for cattle this week. However, the heated bidding wars taking place between factory agents at marts countrywide suggests otherwise. Cow price 'U' grade cows are still being quoted at up to €7.30/kg with €7.00-7.10/kg the general run of quotes for 'R' grade cows. 'O' grade cows are being quoted at €6.80/kg in general, with 'P' grade cows being quoted at €6.70/kg this week. Regular cow suppliers are managing to secure more from the trade. 'O' grade bulls are being quoted at €7.40-7.50/kg with 'P' grade bulls being quoted at €7.30-7.40/kg. Under-16-month bulls are being quoted at €7.40/kg on the grid. Balla Mart in Co Mayo hosted its weekly general cattle sale on Saturday, April 19, with prices in the bullock sale reaching a record-high of €5,160 or €4.59/kg for an 1,125kg Angus bullock. Mart manager Michael Harty told Agriland that this is the highest price ever recorded at the mart venue for a bullock. adding that the five-year old bullock was purchased by a factory agent based in the south of Ireland. The farmer who got the top-price was from Claremorris, Co. Mayo and had two other bullocks in the sale that sold for €4,720 and €4,440. There were approximately 650 lots of cattle on offer in the sale, with store bullocks weighing from 300-400kg 'remaining on par with last week' as the top-quality cattle made from €4.50-5.00/kg. Some of the top bullock prices from the sale at Balla Mart were as follows: 265kg Charolais bullock sold for €1,540 or €5.81/kg; 365kg Belgian Blue bullock sold for €1,990 or €5.45/kg; 420kg Charolais bullock sold for €2,380 or €5.67/kg; 480kg Charolais bullock sold for €2,660 or €5.54/kg; 685kg Charolais bullock sold for €3,160 or €4.61/kg; 820kg Limousin bullock sold for €3,660 or €4.46/kg; 1,015kg Angus bullock sold for €4,720 or €4.65/kg. Bullocks weighing from 300-400kg averaged €4.35/kg at Balla Mart, while store bullocks weighing from 400-500kg averaged €4.47/kg and heavier bullocks weighing over 500kg averaged €3.33/kg. Harty said: 'There was a great selection of heavy cattle and they got great buying with the tops making €4.40/kg from Northern buyers. 'There was nothing wrong with any of the beef cattle, they were as strong a trade as ever. 'We had a May 2023-born Limousin bullock weighing 480kg that made €2,480 or €5.17/kg, with the majority of the heavy bullocks going to Northern factory buyers.'' In the heifer sale, the mart manager said: 'There was a good demand from feeders and feedlot buyers for the heifers with prices very similar to last week for stores. 'Lighter store heifers weighing from 300-400kg averaged €4.13/kg. Heifers weighing from 400-500kg averaged €4.07/kg and heifers weighing over 500kg averaged €3.89/kg.' Some of the top heifer prices from the sale included the following: 280kg Angus heifer sold for €1,960 or €5.96/kg; 400kg Belgian Blue heifer sold for €2,250 or €5.63/kg; 475kg Limousin heifer sold for €2,400 or €5.05/kg; 590kg Limousin heifer sold for €3,000 or €5.08/kg; 610kg Limousin heifer sold for €3,020 or €4.95/kg. 'A smashing Belgian Blue-cross heifer weighing 735kg made €3,250 or €4.42/kg and the 610kg Limousin heifer that made €3,020 or €4.95/kg is gone for breeding,' Harty said. The cows and breeding bulls 'as usual were a good trade', according to the Balla Mart manager, who added that dry cows 'are still at record prices driven by demand from Northern Ireland'. 'There were just over 120 dry cows and 30 springers on offer this week and only two missed in the whole sale with 500kg cows averaging €3.87/kg,' he said.
