Bangladeshi nationals attack Meghalaya villager, four arrested

GUWAHATI: A Meghalaya villager was grievously injured after he was attacked by a nine-member gang of suspected Bangladeshi nationals who had crossed over the international border. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Saturday at the Rongdangai village in Meghalaya's South West Khasi Hills district. Four of the attackers were later arrested. The police said search to nab the remaining others was on. The miscreants forcibly entered a shop at the village and threatened one Balsrang A Marak, who was sleeping there, at gun point asking for the phone number of the shop owner. Later, they kidnapped him but he ran to his house. However, they chased him and fired a few rounds on finding the door of his house shut. When his family opened the door, the miscreants entered the house. At around 2.15 am, an individual informed the police that some armed miscreants entered his land. Cops rushed to the site but the miscreants fled. On Saturday, the locals of Khonjoy village nabbed one of the Bangladeshis. Later, three more miscreants were held.

Armed Bangladeshi Gang Assaults Meghalaya Villager, Caught After Midnight Hunt

Police said a gang of eight to nine armed men slipped into Indian territory under cover of darkness, armed with knives and at least one firearm The Border Security Force (BSF) and Meghalaya Police captured four armed Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly crossed into Indian territory, stabbed a villager, and attempted to drag him across the border before an escape and midnight manhunt that led to their arrest. The brazen attack unfolded on Friday night in Rongdongai village, South West Khasi Hills, just a few hundred metres from the Bangladesh border. Police said a gang of eight to nine armed men slipped into Indian territory under cover of darkness, armed with knives and at least one firearm, reported NDTV. Their target was Balsrang A Marak, a shopkeeper who operates near the frontier. According to police, the gang stormed into his shop while he was asleep, handcuffed him, and began marching him toward the border. 'They would have slit my throat," Marak later told police, recounting how he managed to break free and sprint into a nearby home as the gang fired shots at him in the dark. BSF Inspector General OP Upadhyay described the assault as 'brazen," saying, 'We have arrested four of them and will arrest all of them. Combing operations are on with BSF, police, and local residents working together." The captured suspects, Mefus Rehman, 35; Jangir Alom, 25; Meruphur Rahman, 32; and Saem Hussain, 30, were apprehended after a high-speed foot chase through forested terrain. Three were cornered by BSF and police after warning shots were fired, while villagers nabbed the fourth. Before being caught, the intruders dumped their weapons, Bangladeshi currency, walkie-talkies, chargers, and even an identity card belonging to a Bangladesh police officer, raising suspicions of links to rogue law enforcement elements across the border. Authorities say the rest of the gang remains at large. 'This season has seen a surge in cattle smuggling, with criminals also making illegal incursions to loot natural resources like sand and stone. Large stretches of the riverine border are difficult to patrol, and miscreants are exploiting that terrain," Upadhyay warned. Security forces have intensified vigilance along the Indo-Bangladesh frontier, deploying specialised teams and advanced surveillance to intercept future incursions. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Video: BSF, Meghalaya Cops Pursue, Arrest Armed Bangladeshi Gang

Guwahati: Four Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly attacked an Indian villager at a border area in Meghalaya have been arrested by the Border Security Force (BSF). Visuals of the aftermath of the operation to capture the four Bangladeshi suspects show the BSF questioning them in a forest. The police said the "brazen attack" on the villager happened at night on Friday. Balsrang A Marak, who runs a shop near the border with Bangladesh, was sleeping when eight-nine armed men entered his shop and kidnapped him, the police said. Mr Marak alleged the "Bangladeshi gang" handcuffed him and marched him toward the border. He said he was sure they would have slit his throat. As they were walking in the dark, he managed to sprint away and run inside the first house he could find in the area. The gang fired shots toward him, the shopkeeper said. The BSF along with the police immediately launched an operation and captured three Bangladeshi suspects. The police fired two warning rounds in the air as the suspects began running toward Bangladesh. They were surrounded and arrested. Villagers caught another suspect. Before the police reached them, the four Bangladeshi nationals managed to throw away their weapons, cash, mobile phones and the identity card of a Bangladeshi policeman. All of these have been recovered, the police said. The four Bangladeshi nationals who crossed into India and attacked a villager at night The BSF and the Meghalaya Police are continuing the operation to find the rest of the gang. "This season has seen a surge in cattle smuggling, with criminals using violent attacks on BSF personnel during interception attempts. Large stretches of the border remain riverine and difficult to patrol, creating an opportunity for miscreants to exploit the terrain," Inspector General OP Upadhyay said, adding there is a growing threat from smugglers and organised crime networks operating along the Indo-Bangladesh border. "These people not only engage in cattle trafficking but also make illegal incursions into Indian territory to loot natural resources such as sand and stone. The BSF has intensified vigilance to curb these crimes, deploying specialised teams and advanced technology to monitor river channels and intercept cross-border movements," Mr Upadhyay said. The four suspects have been identified as Mefus Rehman, 35; Jangir Alom, 25; Meruphur Rahman, 32, and Saem Hussain, 30.
