‘Give him a car': Aussie Rules erupts over sensational ‘mark of the century'
Alex Jesaulenko, eat your heart out. We have a new contender for the mark of the 21st century after a player in Victoria's Eastern Football League took an all-time specky on Saturday. Playing for Blackburn Moreton Park against Balwyn, Daniel Wood took the sensational mark after the footy was kicked high into the air. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. Wood launched himself onto the shoulders of an opponent and got some unbelievable hang time, floating in the air before taking the mark and crashing to the turf. A massive gasp went up in the crowd and his teammates were visibly in shock as he went flying to take the mark. Wood landed heavily but thankfully appeared to be OK as teammates flocked to check on him and congratulate him on the mark, which has already been described as a candidate for mark of the century. One opposition player can be seen halfheartedly calling for a score review in the background, before Wood made the moment even better by going back and kicking the goal. Wood's mark evoked memories of Alex Jesaulenko's iconic for Carlton in the 1970 Grand Final, and Shaun Smith's all-time hanger in the goalsquare for Melbourne in 1995. The Box Hill Hawks account X shared footage of the mark on social media, writing: 'Yesterday, while playing for Blackburn, our own Daniel Wood took one of the greatest marks in the history of Australian rules football. 'Don't believe me? Just watch … Give him a car, a boat, a plane, the International Space Station - this is as good as it gets.' Former AFL player Daniel Gorringe was just as stunned, writing on his @dandoesfooty page: 'We should give him a car.' One fan wrote on Instagram: 'If that was me I would just retire. Can't do any better than that.' A second said: 'His boss is hoping he lands in time for work on Monday.' A third joked: 'Score review what we can see is that the player has gone into space after that mark. Decision on the scoreboard.' Another said: 'That's the greatest mark of all time.' Wood's sensational mark comes a month after a VFL player left jaws on the floor with one of the longest goals ever kicked. In the opening quarter of the VFL clash between Coburg and Sydney, it was Swans player Jordan Endemann who delivered the absurd scenes. Off the back of a turnover, Endemann received the ball on the back flank before launching a torpedo towards his own half. The kick was unloaded from just inside the back end of the centre square and quickly sailed out of view of the camera as it soared through the air. As the camera panned toward Sydney's forward 50, Swans forward Jack Buller turned and began sprinting back towards goal. The ball came back into view, landing around 25-30m from the goals. But the journey wasn't over there as it rolled end on end, beating out Buller and Coburg defender Rhys Galvin as it bounced through for a goal.

$100m James Packer backed project's wellbeing, longevity boost
A consortium backed by billionaire James Packer have revealed their vision to turn a Balwyn nursing home into a life-extending luxury apartment complex. A wellness retreat inspired by Hotel Chadstone that features a gym and mix of saunas, a curated library and reflection garden are among the features planned for its well-heeled future residents. The former 52-bed Aveo aged care centre at 23 Maleela Ave, Balwyn, was bought by the NPACT investment firm which is heavily funded by one of Australia's richest men, Mr Packer, and headed by former Crown Resorts strategy and development vice president Todd Nisbet. Melbourne lawyer, businessman and former ABC board member Joe Gersh is also part of the group behind the planned $100m revamp that will ultimately feature 31 homes. The project will be developed alongside Chapter Group and has been designed by Cera Stribely Architects, with landscaping by garden guru to Melbourne's elite Jack Merlo. Mr Nisbet said the project would aim to nurture the body, mind and spirit of residents with a view to increased longevity and overall wellness. 'We have focused on providing features within the development which not only promote physical health, such as the gymnasium, saunas and cold shower, but also to create opportunities for socialisation and the building of friendships through our club lounge facility, and relaxation and enrichment in our library and reflection garden,' he said. The largest residences will span 'mansion proportions' of more than 600sq m, including one with its own swimming pool and a rooftop retreat on offer. After previously working on One Barangaroo, the tallest tower in Sydney and home to one of the nation's few six-star hotels, he added that the 31-apartment complex in Balwyn to be named Maleela Rise was also intended to create a balance between hotel luxury and a sense of home. 'We have done this in many ways; for example, we are incorporating a concierge service to provide not only a convenience, but also a welcoming presence to our residents at the end of a long day,' Mr Nisbet said. 'It's an opulent environment, but its designed for every day living. 'Inside the apartments, we have also added moments of extravagance through the use of incredible natural stones, such as Arebescato Rosso, but they are grounded within an overall neutral palette which will make it liveable and timeless.' European oak flooring will be complemented by marble and travertine throughout the homes, while many residences will also have fireplaces and bars. A mix of two and three-bedroom floorplans will be offered, all homes will have butler's pantries in their kitchens, large terraces and multiple carparks. There has already been interest from local business luminaries in the largest homes. Apartment prices will start at $1.7m for a two-bedroom home, while penthouses will commence sales from $5.6m. It comes shortly after James Packer and developer Time & Place had a legal win to compel the sale of a studio apartment holding up plans for a Potts Point redevelopment in Sydney. Packer is helping to fund plans to buy out the 80-apartment The Chimes tower, with expectations it will cost about $100m all up to acquire. It will then be overhauled as a new project.

EFNL 2025: Inside Rowville's third-quarter slaughter of Balwyn
Don't miss out on the headlines from Eastern. Followed categories will be added to My News. Just 15 points separated the pair at half-time. What followed was a third-quarter blitz which put the rest of the competition on notice. Rowville's 10.14 (74) to 6.8 (44) victory over Balwyn on Saturday plummeted the reigning premier to 0-2, while keeping its own record unblemished to start 2025. Rowville senior coach Ben Wise said his side's third term – spearheaded by midfield bull Anthony Brolic – came off the back of a standout contested display. 'It was as good a contested game as we'd played in 18 months, I reckon,' Wise said. 'Led strongly by our captain 'Brol' and our leaders on every line, they set the tone early. 'We had a big focus knowing they were coming off a loss, unfurling the flag and Anzac weekend, outside of just coming up against the reigning premiers. 'I'd been around Balwyn a long time (as a player) so I know the ground really well and how you've got to play it, so I was able to get the boys focused throughout the week and train really well. 'We had a couple of sole focuses on our contest and pressure and I thought if we brought that for four quarters, we'd be really hard to beat.' Team of the Year ruckman Nik Schoenmakers also featured among the best afield alongside Jesse Eickhoff, Tyson Sruk, Jayden Martingale and Cooper MacDonald. VFL-listed talent Lachlan Wynd finished with four goals, while Brolic kicked two. Wise said his side shifted gears to force a 6.6 to 1.0 third quarter to all but seal the deal. 'We just found a different way to win – the game didn't allow us to play our normal brand of footy and fast pace and slick ball-movement, high transition stuff … it was just really contested,' he said. 'The third quarter we probably moved the ball better than what they did and that allowed us to bang on some goals.' Rowville hosts Vermont in Round 3.
